Trainers look at AP after he suffered a horrible leg injury Sunday (AP)

By Will Brinson

UPDATE, via the AP: Peterson is scheduled for an MRI late Saturday after taking a direct hit to his left knee in Saturday's 33-26 win over the Washington Redskins. Coach Leslie Frazier said Peterson had a sprained knee and would be evaluated after the team returned to Minnesota.

Peterson said he knew "it was something bad" the moment he was hit and that he was in "severe pain" on he lay on the field. He was hurt on a tackle by Redskins safety DeJon Gomes on a 3-yard gain on the first offensive play of the second half.

On the next play, Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder was hurt when sacked by Adam Carriker and London Fletcher. Frazier said Ponder had "concussion-like symptoms" and will be reevaluated in the coming days.

-------

On the Vikings first drive of the third quarter, the worst possible thing for Minnesota happened, as Adrian Peterson suffered an absolutely brutal leg injury -- there is zero chance he'll return for the game against Washington.

As our Redskins Rapid Reporter John Keim points out, Peterson was carted off from the field and has actually already been ruled out.

Peterson took a handoff on first and 10 and cut back to the left side of the field. When Redskins rookie safety DeJon Gomes tackled him, Peterson's left leg caved in and he fell to the ground in obvious pain.

After trainers looked at the running back's leg, he was carted off from the field.

Things didn't get much better for the Vikings after that, as rookie quarterback Christian Ponder suffered a concussion -- he's out for the remainder of the game as well.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

My heart goes out to AD...that looks like a career ending injury.

I saw Ken Norton Jr.'s hit on Napoleon Kaufman that ended his career..this was a similar hit.  Not as gruesome but just as wobbly.

Been a good run, Adrian

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

First off Vikings fan if Luck was drafted by the Viks he wouldnt succeed. You have no WRs, Harvins good but not great, there a run first team with a bad line and a horrible defense. the players dont care about draft picks or whos the next best thing, they play to win. I would as a Viking fan though be questioning why u sit out AP for 2 weeks then put him in with nothing to gain even when he wasnt healthy to play this game. Shoulda just gave reps to gerhart and move on. Plus i would say Luck would pull an Eli and refue to sign with u guys and demand a trade.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

For those asking how "gruesome" this injury was, I think the article exagerates a bit. I don't think it looked any worse than the injury Daren McFadden got a couple weeks ago.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

Tough break for AP. If it is a season ending injury, hopefully he will recover for next season and be good to go.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

Are you kidding me? This "win" over the Redskins is so typical of the Viking franchise. Yesterday the Vikes had a shot at the top pick in the draft and a healthy star RB. Tonight they have no shot at the top pick and AP is facing a potemtially horrible injury. Add the QB controversy that will come after this game and well...... this "win" was no victory for Minnesota.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

Hopefully this doesn't affect him long term. Vikings are going to need him if they ever expect to get any better.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

For all those asking why AP was playing in a meaningless game. Isnt it true that with only 2 wins Minnesota has been playing meaningless games the last 6 weeks? I dont think the Minnesota brass are paying AP the kind of money hes making to play only in meaningful games. The fans are not paying premium prices to attend meaningless games just to watch all the backups play. In my opinion, if it counts in record books then its meaningful. Sure the injury is unfortunate, but thats sports.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

I didn't see the hit but from the picture in the article and the tone of the posts here it has to be a horrific injury. Hopefully AP can get his body healed and be back next season. I'd hate to see a potentially great (HOF?) career ended by an injury in a meaningless game.
GET WELL AP AND HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT SEASON!!!

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

This poor kid. Awful hit, he just might be unlucky at best. Hopefully, this does not ruin his career and he will be back next year, not this year. Give up on the season and come strong next year.
