Did Bill Cowher already interview for the SD job?

Turner

By Josh Katzowitz

Now that the Chargers have been knocked out of the playoff picture officially after the Lions dominated them on Saturday, we can almost surely expect to see the front office fire coach Norv Turner.

That’s especially true after a report surfaced last week that said that in order for Turner and San Diego general manager A.J. Smith to save their jobs, the Chargers needed to win the final two games of the season.

Week 16 recap
That obviously didn’t happen, so now, the discussion has turned to who could replace Turner. And while our CBS colleague Bill Cowher continues to say he’s not interested in leaving the world of TV (even Dan Marino, in answering a question about the open Dolphins job, said he didn’t think Cowher’s mindset was in returning to coaching), the New York Post has reported that Cowher already interviewed in San Diego.

“I was told this week by an in-the-know source with intimate knowledge of the San Diego sports scene that Cowher already had ‘an interview’ with high-ranking people inside the Chargers organization who were gauging his interest and that he expressed his interest in the job should Norv Turner be fired,” wrote Mark Cannizzaro in the Post.

That report, though, is at odds with what the San Diego Union Tribune is writing. Reported Kevin Acee: “Two Chargers sources said unequivocally and vehemently on Saturday that the Chargers have not talked to Cowher.”

Making matters more complicated was the fact that former Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who figures to be a popular coaching choice this offseason (including, perhaps, with the Chargers), was in Detroit and talking with Turner before the game (Fisher’s son is a defensive assistant for the Lions).

Owner Dean Spanos told the Union-Trib that he’d wait until next week to make a decision on Turner.

Look, chances are Cowher won’t be the one to replace him, because it’s unlikely Cowher will return to the game this season (if ever).

Yet, even though Cowher recently told Sports Illustrated this, “People don't understand. I'm not coaching. I'm enjoying life more right now than I ever have,” his name won’t evaporate from coaching searches anytime soon. Even if he really is intent on not ever returning.

If Cowher has any sense at all he will stay in the booth. The Fin job would just cause him alot of headache he dont need,it is a job where the main office is a joke and dont committ to winning.

You are right on.AJ smith is a jerk.If the chargers would have kept schottenheimer and brees,i think they would have won a super bowl.At least schotteheimer showed emotion, when things go bad turner looks like he is about ready to cry.Aj and turner both need to go and go now.!!!!!

If you're as good as your talent, then why are the 49ers division champs and the #2 seed under Jim Harbaugh when they struggled to win 4 or 6 games under Singletary, with essentially the same roster (same QB, same feature RB, same feature TE, same stud LBs, etc)????

Coaches can make a huge difference, but there are very few of them who actually do. Cowher is one who does. Ironically, Norv Turner is one who does too, although to the opposite degree.

Do "journalist have any idea how much they suck?  Here are at least 4 contradictions from various sources in this one short story.  Goes with my golden rule for the hapless masses.  Never believe an initial news report. These fame wh_re journalists rarely get it right.
Josh Katzowitz a journalist? LMFAO! He's a blogger who can't write and hasn't a clue. He's pathetic.

OMG.... I can't believe someone actually quoted a New York Post story.  That is like quoting the national enquirer.... or CBS Sportsline.  Please.  Does this Josh guy just read fake newspapers and write stories about other stories to publish on this site??  And someone pays him for it???

This is a lame article.  Seems I know about the same whether I read this or not.  Anyways, I thought the scuttlebutt lately was if Cowher was coming back, he wanted to coach the Giants.

Did Bill Cowher already interview for the SD job?

Everybody keeps talking about Norv Turner, but who is the man that hired Norv Turner? Who is the man that fired a 14-2 coach? Who is the man the kicked Drew Brees to the curb? Who is the man who has bad draft after bad draft? Am I the only one who sees a trend here?

Did Bill Cowher already interview for the SD job?

I can see Bill Cowher landing with the Chargers. He is going to want to go somewhere with a QB that is already in place and the Chargers have that with Phillip Rivers. I wish he would consider taking the Dolphins job, AFC East would be fun to watch as he went up against the Patriots and Jets twice a year

Worst defensive job by Turner???...How about WORST offensive job....he completely moved away from the offensive game plan that seemed to be working the past three weeks...instead he keeps calling screens for that slob Tolbert, not throwing vertical and completely abandoning Ryan Matthews...go figure
