Report: Vikings close to a deal to stay in MIN

WilfBy Josh Katzowitz

The NFL still seems awfully intent on moving a team to Los Angeles, but it sounds like that team won’t be the Minnesota Vikings. That’s the word from Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, who reported on NBC’s Football Night in America that the Vikings and Minnesota officials are close to a deal that would keep the team where it’s always been.

This has been a long drawn-out process for the people of Minnesota.

The Vikings have been trying to build a new stadium in Arden Hills, but even though the team, the state and the county all promised money for the stadium, a new facility was about $100 million short. Then, there was talk that a new stadium might be built within the Minneapolis city limits, which would be less expensive but not what the Vikings officials wanted.

The Vikings and L.A.
But considering the Vikings lease with the Metrodome was set to expire (though there was talk that the lease might have contained a clause that would keep the Vikings in their current stadium for another season), it behooved the state to get this deal done.

While owner Zygi Wilf has made it clear he wants to stay in the Minneapolis area, if L.A., with its promise of glitz, glam and a new stadium, puts the full-court press on the Vikings ownership, there’s little question the Vikings would have to listen.

And when you’re listening to somebody who’s trying to woo you, anything can happen.

i haven't followed this, butlet me guess. a billinaire wants the city to build him a stadium so he can raise the prices so that the people that paid forthe stadium cannot afford to buy a ticket. install those sky boxes, charge an even more outrageous price.

If you build it they will come. Applies to almost anywhere but LaLa land.  It is where teams in any sport go to die of apathy. A slow and painfull dead.

I am glad to hear they are probably staying in Minnasota because truthfully that's where they belong.
I can not imagine them somewhere else especially in LA.

There will be a new stadium built in MN because the Vikings are more important to that state than they can ever be in LA.   And it is not true that Wilf would be best served from a business standpoint by selling the team to Phil Anschutz because LA is a franchise killer of a city, with ZERO fanbase for a team and no evidence of local business support for one.

There has never been any credibility to the idea that the Vikings would move from Minnesota or not get a new MN stadium.   The reality is LA is a pipe dream - there's no audience for a team there, this new stadium being discussed isn't going to get built, and the ones pushing the team-to-LA story are just suckers going along with it.

The Bengals and their thugs would be the only team LA could cheer for

Report: Vikings close to a deal to stay in MIN

Though I currently live in Los Angeles, I am a native of Minneapolis.  I like Peter King and think he's a good NFL writer, but I'm not going to give him the benefit of the doubt on this story.  The reason is because the public portion of the proposed Arden Hills stadium (approximately $300 million) needs to be passed by the state legislature.  Not only is the legislature currently out of session, but there isn't even sufficient votes within that body to approve the stadium bill.

So if the Vikings are "close to a deal to stay in Minnesota," the only thing that "deal" could be would be if Zygi Wilf has agreed to a new lease at the Metrodome.  This isn't impossible.  Despite all the uncertainty at the state capitol about whether or not a stadium bill will ever be approved, Wilf might eschew the possibility of moving to LA by signing a 3 or 4 year lease agreement at the dome...just long enough to get the new stadium built.

If this is indeed the case, then Vikings fans really are getting a massive Christmas present because from purely a business perspective, Zygi Wilf would be best served by selling the majority share of the team to Phil Anschutz and moving to Los Angeles.

Everyone knows that moving to LA is a franchise curse. There is nothing good about moving a team there. From  the fans robbing you in the parking lot to front office woes. Im not a Vikings fan, but they have been in Minnesota for years and i hate breaking tradition. If LA wants another team i am all for making one to two more expansion teams. All of the fans of the NFL wanted more games anyhow, so that could be a good way to make that happen. The problem with that would be where to put another team. Maybe a team in the northwest around the Dakotas or Montana maybe, i dont know but it would be viable.

I don't know what caliber businessman Zygi is, or really anything about him, but the 'stache is rockin. Keep doing America proud with your superior facial hair, Zygi.
