The Bengals have been one of the best stories of 2011, winning enough games so far to set them up for a win-and-they're-in situation against the Ravens in Week 17. (As noted at our playoff scenario home, Cincy's in if the Jets and Raiders both lose too.) But not enough people are taking notice, and Cincy's still struggling to fill Paul Brown Stadium.

Week 16 Recap

To make up for the woeful attendance (and to avoid a local blackout), the Bengals are offering a buy-one, get-one free ticket special between now and Sunday's game, an unheard of special for an NFL game. Oh, and the players are begging the fans to show up too.

"I just want to thank the fans who were out there today,” defensive lineman Domata Peko said, per the Cincinnati Enquirer. "We really felt you guys out there, and that helped us out big time. I really want to encourage all of the Cincinnati fans to come out and cheer us on as we try to make the playoffs."

You can't really blame the Bengals, though. On October 2, 41,142 people showed up to see Cincy play the Bills and it was the smallest crowd in regular-season history for the stadium. That was the third time in 2011 there were less than 42,000 folks at Paul Brown, including this past Saturday, when only 41,273 people showed up despite the Bengals battling for the playoffs.

Here's an alternate suggestion if the sale doesn't work out: just have Jerome Simpson do flips into the end zone at halftime.

Bengals offer buy-1, get-1 free tix for Week 17

Philsfan1 and Matteo LC, you are right, we are embarrassed about the attendance this year but are still very good fans given a good product. Take our metro population of 2,000,000 and add the difference of say Detroit at 4,000,000 or Philadelphia at 6,000,000 and I dare say we also have sellouts and maybe an NBA & NHL franchise also Not to make any excuses but it is a numbers game.

42,000 people at your game and you're in contention for the playoffs...Bengal fans should be embarrassed. Look at all the excuses from the Bengal fans...annoying. My Jags suck yet again but were STILL perceived as the team that can't fill it's stadium, an 85,000 full capacity stadium mind you. But we covered seats to make the capacity comparable to other NFL markets. We haven't blacked out a game in 2 years.
Apparently you don't know that much about your franchise... but they block off a lot of those seats every Sunday to prevent Jags games from being repeatadly blacked out....   I guess you miss all the seats covered by tarps every game you go to...

Squizza, I can't argue with most of your post except for the following:
As for those saying the franchise will relocate, not on the deal that the Browns have with Hamilton County they won't. Brown is still making money.

If you don't think there is enough money or a better offer in LA to entice Mike Brown to move the franchise then I have a beautiflul strip of land overlooking the meandering and scenic Mill Creek I would like to sell you. There is some serious cash out in tinseltown

As you and many other Bengal fans, I would like to see Mike Brown keep his word on pursuing an indoor practice facility. The training camp will be moved back to PBS eventually. I think in Mike Brown's defense, the Palmer trade was a step in the right direction. For whatever reason, the 2 for 1 sale is a PR gem. If he could do a few more promotions, reach out to the fans in a public way, and support rather than fleece the Univ of Cincinnati when they play at PBS, we can all live happiliy ever after. Whether a GM or president with a football background is necessary will always be in question. Ask the Cleveland fans about Mike Holmgren. Are they getting their money's worth? If we continue getting lucky with draft choices like Green and Dalton all might be forgiven. Thank you Mr. Brown and Coach Lewis. One more thing you can do - do whatever it takes to keep Mike Zimmer. Just a few little wishes for the New Year and we can get back to starting a new sellout string of games next year.

Happy New Year!

Bengals offer buy-1, get-1 free tix for Week 17

I wanted to buy two club seats for the Indianapolis game earlier in the season (approximate cost $300) and the Bengals would not sell the tickets to me unless I bought the club seats for the remaining games also.  So why should I buy tickets now?  Let them give them away.  The lack of ticket buying isn't against the players but rather a backlash against Mike Brown.

Mike Brown is a terrible owner, he should be giving the fans free tickets for the next 20 years.... 3 winning season in 20 years. 3!!! He is the worst owner of a sports team in the history of sports.

Wow.  BOGO for a potential NFL playoff team?
Just like a crappy shoe store...how pathetic are the
fans in Cincinnati?  Embarrassing.

While I'm here:  Can someone explain what
"Who Dey?" means?  Is there some kind of French/
Creole side to Cincinnati that I don't know about?
Sounds like it was copied from the Saints and Louisiana.

Nice try though Cinci.  Now buy one get one to watch NFL
football for your possible playoffs.  41,000??

Keep trying to justify it if it makes you feel better.

It is what it is.  Pathetic fans.

They sold out every game from mid-2003 to mid-2010. They aren't bad fans here. They didn't but tickets in protest of last year's team and just got used to not going and a blacked out game. My friends that don't go anymore are still just as big of fans as they were. They've gotten used to not having to budget in $100 per person, per game. They will be back next year when there is more time to plan and get used to spending the money again. Neither tickets nor lives are cheap.

How can Bengals fans be both "pathetic" and "just like their owner"?

The Bengals rarely get much national attention and it's usually when they screw up. We're not a national joke for nothing.

There again, we still have a franchise, despite going 3-18 over the last 21 years for winning records. How many other franchises would survive that? The Jaguars have hardly been in the league and they have both attendance problems and constant relocation rumours.

As for those saying the franchise will relocate, not on the deal that the Browns have with Hamilton County they won't. Brown is still making money.

If the Bengals ever got a GM, ever bothered to build the training facilities that Marv Lewis has wanted for years, indoor training, revolutionary! If they ever bothered to add to the one full-time scout or medical facilities, then other fans can have cause for complaint as to why Bengals fans are choosing to vote with their feet.

Add in a crappy economy and you can see why it's a perfect storm for low attendances. You know what? We're not the only ones but I guess as we're going to the play-offs and others aren't, we're the story.

And we'll be more of the story when we lose on Sunday because the Bengals always lose must-win games.
