The Bengals have been one of the best stories of 2011, winning enough games so far to set them up for a win-and-they're-in situation against the Ravens in Week 17. (As noted at our playoff scenario home, Cincy's in if the Jets and Raiders both lose too.) But not enough people are taking notice, and Cincy's still struggling to fill Paul Brown Stadium.

Week 16 Recap

To make up for the woeful attendance (and to avoid a local blackout), the Bengals are offering a buy-one, get-one free ticket special between now and Sunday's game, an unheard of special for an NFL game. Oh, and the players are begging the fans to show up too.

"I just want to thank the fans who were out there today,” defensive lineman Domata Peko said, per the Cincinnati Enquirer. "We really felt you guys out there, and that helped us out big time. I really want to encourage all of the Cincinnati fans to come out and cheer us on as we try to make the playoffs."

You can't really blame the Bengals, though. On October 2, 41,142 people showed up to see Cincy play the Bills and it was the smallest crowd in regular-season history for the stadium. That was the third time in 2011 there were less than 42,000 folks at Paul Brown, including this past Saturday, when only 41,273 people showed up despite the Bengals battling for the playoffs.

Here's an alternate suggestion if the sale doesn't work out: just have Jerome Simpson do flips into the end zone at halftime.

Be very careful what you ask for Bengals fans....When the Browns left Cleveland, Art Modell said he was in the red, and no fan support. He lied, and Cleveland couldn't do anything about it! The stadium was 80 to 90% full every Sunday too!!!! Since the Brown have been back, they are the Bengals under Mike Brown, BUT they still show up for games, just like they did under Art. BUT it seems to me, Mike Brown has made some great moves over the last 3 or 4 years. You have a team in a tough division, contending for a playoff spot, and with a few players here or there, could be division champs in a year or two. I thinks it's more the coaches than the players in Bengal town! But be very careful, the LA Bengals, has a nice sound to it, and Mike Brown, just like Art, might run for the money. And when Mike Brown says he didn't get a good fan base, empty seats don't lie!!

Fans outside the city of Cincinnati have no ideal what this situation is like. The fans love the players and team but the protest is 100% against owner Mike Brown. He has penny pinched for years, refusing to hire a GM or scouts because he feels he can do the job. 18 out of 20 losing seasons and he still feels that his way is best. And alot of those losing seasons were 3-13, 4-12 as well. He hired coaches on the cheap such as Dave Shula who had no clue what they were doing. He alienated players to the point that free agents would not even come in for a visit. The city built him a new stadium when he threatened to take the team and leave and still we are left with the same results. I love Andy Dalton, love A J Green, love the defense...but I won't give Mike Brown any more of my money.

Bengals fans must be total clowns. If that's the best they do for a play-off contender, send the team to L.A....The Browns run out a similar product (maybe not this year) and their fans still show up week after week, so I can't help but wonder about the folks around Cincinnati. I drive 3 hours and deal with D.C. traffic to see the Redskins when I can, obviously knowing they may not win, but a play-off hopeful? C'mon man!

You must be the clown to think that the Bengals' poor play over the years is the only reason fans aren't out this season.  Fans have sold out for this losing franchise year after year up until this season - and why should fans go, because Mike Brown fell into a winning season by some miracle?  People aren't going because they aren't cheering for the team or they don't want to see them succeed, people aren't going because of their hatred towards Mike Brown.

It's not about people not supporting the team. It's about the fans not wanting to give Mike Brown their hard earned money The vast majority of people in Cincinnati hate Mike Brown. That doesn't mean they hate the Bengals, however.

You guys have no idea how bad Mike Brown and the Bengals have been the last 20 years. People have completely given up on Mike Brown. We, the taxpayers, pay for the new stadium and Brown hasn't done anything to improve the franchise in over 20 years. I know a lot of people, including myself, who have vowed to never give Mike Brown a cent of their money.

It sucks because i really like this team, and they are playing really well, but i can't bring myself to spending 80-100 dollars on a Bengals game after sitting through complete crap the last 20 years.

I really hope they win and will be rooting for them and watching them, but i won't be there.

Sad really, not a bengals fan but its exciting to see a team that has been down for awhile have a chance to make the playoffs.  Hard to believe they cant sell out a game for a potential playoff team.  Didnt this happen with the reds also a few years back, werent they struggling to fill seats despite being in first place?  Anyway, good luck bengals, hope you win your way in!

The Bengals can make do with small crowds because they have no GM or scouts to pay.Mike Brown will still make money because he can do it all.Laughing
