Ryan: Sanchez is 'my guy,' no interest in Manning

By Ryan Wilson

First there was the ProFootballTalk report that the Jets, realizing what the rest of us already knew for some time, had finally come to the conclusion that Mark Sanchez might not be a franchise quarterback. There were also reports, courtesy of CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman, that while Sanchez may not have lived up to expectations, it's more likely that Brian Schottenheimer, the man responsible for calling 59 passing plays against the Giants Saturday, might be in more immediate danger of losing his job.

Well, good news, Mark. Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Monday that you're his guy.

“There’s no way that we’re looking to replace Mark Sanchez,” Ryan said on ESPN radio, according to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta. “There’s no doubt… If they were both out there and you were starting a draft, I would take…. Would you take Peyton Manning? Yeah, I’d take Peyton Manning over anybody. I’m not saying that….. I’m not telling that lie. Of course, I would take him. But right now, when you’re looking at our football team and our franchise, obviously we feel great about our quarterback situation. Is he going to get better, he absolutely is. Is he perfect? Not by any stretch of the imagination right now. …. But we think he has the ability to be special."

Ryan concedes that Manning, when healthy, is the NFL's best quarterback ("I even put him over Tom Brady"), but that doesn't mean the Jets would be interested in him should he and the Colts part ways this offseason.

"Do I think it’s even a consideration for us?" Ryan asked rhetorically. "No, I don’t.” He also called the PFT report "not true," and reiterated that Sanchez "is my guy."

Ryan, perhaps still caught up in the holiday season, was in a giving mood Monday; he also threw his support behind his much-maligned offensive coordinator.

"I have a huge amount of confidence in both guys," he said. "There’s no doubt. I’ve stated it over and over my feelings about Mark Sanchez. I’ve said it before. No quarterback’s going to look great when that’s all you do… you fall behind. It wasn’t Mark’s best day by any stretch of the imagination, but we know he’s done it. And he’s been doing it. We have great confidence in him and I have great confidence in him. As far as Brian Schottenheimer is concerned,  shoot, we’ll just keep working side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder and we’re trying to find a way to beat Miami. I have confidence in him. I have confidence in all our coaches. We have to find a way to get it done.”

Schottenheimer has drawn plenty criticism for his pass-heavy game plans this season, and he's frustrated Jets fans pretty much since joining the staff in 2006. Still, he's rumored to be a head coaching candidate for any number of opportunities this offseason.

For now, though, Ryan likes his chances with Sanchez and Schottenheimer. And if the Jets want to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season, they'll need a lot of help. First things first: New York has to beat the Dolphins in Week 17, and then hope for a Bengals loss to the Ravens, Titans loss or tie to the Texans, and an Oakland loss or tie to the Chargers. Or: a Jets win, Bengals loss, Titans loss or tie, and a Broncos loss or tie.

When you miss the playoffs after going to the AFC championship two years in a row, you are going to hear it in NYC. Sanchez is a good but not great QB. It is the offensive line that cost you. Greene had a good season but without LT being healthy, the short passing game was easily handled. Outside of Holmes I do not like the Jet receivers.  To LT, what a career, last year was a treat, this year its reality, but I loved watching him play.

I dont think anyone on this board knows shit about football.

Including you.

You then have to look at his coaching.

really because if you know football then why was that not an issue his first two years.

When the guy actually puts up Pro Bowl numbers  you will come up with some way to say he still sucks.

No....he will prove his detractors wrong...currently his numbers for a third year QB don't show that this will happen.

Stafford did crap his first two seasons now he throws down the field in triple coverage to Megatron and he is better than Sanchez give me a break

He is much better than sanchez and he missed 6 games as a rookie and than 13 his second year which makes his progress this year amazing considering all he went through. and if think he only throws to MT in triple coverage then you know nothing about stafford or football.

You guy know shit about football you could not even name your teams Starting O line without checking the depth chart.  99% of you got bullied in high school and now hate on Athletes because they were the ones who had sex with your hot sisters.  When Sanchez develops and yes the kid has talent I saw him at the combine and he was way more talented than Glass Joe(Mathew Stafford) you all will be kissing his ass like you do now with Aaron Rodgers.

Now you have just shown yourself to be a true lowlife.....Thanks for the nonsense

Thank you you are the one guy on here who can see talent.  I am not a Jets fan and can see this kid needs good coaching and solid players around him.  It takes most Quarterbacks 5 years to fully develop.  He will be much better next season.  The Jets need to draft David DeCastro at Left Guard from Stanford and make that Left Side the best Left side in football then draft two more wideouts and another tight end and let Plaxico go or sign him to a cheaper one year than they did this year and watch out.

I dont think anyone on this board knows shit about football.  Sanchez has played better every year that he has been in the NFL.  You then have to look at his coaching.  The Jets with Rex Ryan are a defense first football team.  Dont be a bunch a dumb people.  Sanchez has tons of talent and he is tough.  Brady was coached up by his Grim Reaper Coach.  Rodgers sat behind the best Quarterback of all time(statistics wise) with Favre.  Eli is a veteran and has a pedigree bloodline.  What do you expect out of a third year Quarterback who has had all of his wideouts from last year leave except Holmes.  When the guy actually puts up Pro Bowl numbers  you will come up with some way to say he still sucks.  Stafford did crap his first two seasons now he throws down the field in triple coverage to Megatron and he is better than Sanchez give me a break.  Look at the coaching and the tools Sanchez has had to develop and play with the KID is tough.

The guy is an above avergae NFL quarterback at this point

Actually, he is not...total QB rating an a putrid completion % say is he below average at the position.

Sanchez gets sacked and or hit as much as anybody in the NFL

Not true..he has been sacked 38 times there are twleve teams with far worse numbers the highest being the Cards with 52 times sacked. There are 12 teams who have allowed between 30 and 38 sacks so he is right in-line with the majority.

Another main thing is the lack of a run game

Eli Manning's run game is dead last, stafford's is worse, Rodgers is worse and Brady's is just about the same.

56% completion percentage

That is not good at all...this is why he is below avg. he ranks 27th out of 33 QB in this catagory, his QB rating puts him at 22nd among QBs while his avg yards per pass is ranked 28th

Sounds like denial...you've blamed everyone but Sanchez. When the Jets had a very very good defense and the best run game in the NFL Sanchez still could not deliver when needed.

TheDiGio you see the same problem I see. Sanchez is not the problem Schottenheimer is. The OC needs to be fired and have Moore take over as OC and Sanchez will thrive with great coaching. Look at how Cutler improved since the Bears changed OC's.

Tomebrady stated:

Hey Hoyt...nice name by the way....
thanks. I figured coming out with a made-up silly name was much better than coming up with a name that made it seem like I was trying to act like I was part of a team... or trying to have the QBs baby. By the way, TomEBrady, do you know the meaning of the word "sycophant"?

If you are a NY JOKES FAN...I must say....I'm really sorry....that's your problem....

Nope, not a jets fan. Here's a hint - my favorite team has won their last two meaningful games against the Patsies.

Here's another hint:what comes after 18?
"And 1".

PS ..enjoy watching the Patriots play in the Divisional round in January...and probably beyond
Beyond? Now, why would this year be any different than 2008? Or 2009? Or 2010? It can't be because the Jets aren't there, we all know they suck, so how could their absence affect the Patsies? The Jets are Jokes, they couldn't beat the Patsies in the playoffs, could they?
