Ryan: Sanchez is 'my guy,' no interest in Manning

By Ryan Wilson

First there was the ProFootballTalk report that the Jets, realizing what the rest of us already knew for some time, had finally come to the conclusion that Mark Sanchez might not be a franchise quarterback. There were also reports, courtesy of CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman, that while Sanchez may not have lived up to expectations, it's more likely that Brian Schottenheimer, the man responsible for calling 59 passing plays against the Giants Saturday, might be in more immediate danger of losing his job.

Well, good news, Mark. Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Monday that you're his guy.

“There’s no way that we’re looking to replace Mark Sanchez,” Ryan said on ESPN radio, according to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta. “There’s no doubt… If they were both out there and you were starting a draft, I would take…. Would you take Peyton Manning? Yeah, I’d take Peyton Manning over anybody. I’m not saying that….. I’m not telling that lie. Of course, I would take him. But right now, when you’re looking at our football team and our franchise, obviously we feel great about our quarterback situation. Is he going to get better, he absolutely is. Is he perfect? Not by any stretch of the imagination right now. …. But we think he has the ability to be special."

Ryan concedes that Manning, when healthy, is the NFL's best quarterback ("I even put him over Tom Brady"), but that doesn't mean the Jets would be interested in him should he and the Colts part ways this offseason.

"Do I think it’s even a consideration for us?" Ryan asked rhetorically. "No, I don’t.” He also called the PFT report "not true," and reiterated that Sanchez "is my guy."

Ryan, perhaps still caught up in the holiday season, was in a giving mood Monday; he also threw his support behind his much-maligned offensive coordinator.

"I have a huge amount of confidence in both guys," he said. "There’s no doubt. I’ve stated it over and over my feelings about Mark Sanchez. I’ve said it before. No quarterback’s going to look great when that’s all you do… you fall behind. It wasn’t Mark’s best day by any stretch of the imagination, but we know he’s done it. And he’s been doing it. We have great confidence in him and I have great confidence in him. As far as Brian Schottenheimer is concerned,  shoot, we’ll just keep working side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder and we’re trying to find a way to beat Miami. I have confidence in him. I have confidence in all our coaches. We have to find a way to get it done.”

Schottenheimer has drawn plenty criticism for his pass-heavy game plans this season, and he's frustrated Jets fans pretty much since joining the staff in 2006. Still, he's rumored to be a head coaching candidate for any number of opportunities this offseason.

For now, though, Ryan likes his chances with Sanchez and Schottenheimer. And if the Jets want to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season, they'll need a lot of help. First things first: New York has to beat the Dolphins in Week 17, and then hope for a Bengals loss to the Ravens, Titans loss or tie to the Texans, and an Oakland loss or tie to the Chargers. Or: a Jets win, Bengals loss, Titans loss or tie, and a Broncos loss or tie.

Your High. Jets wont see the playoffs again for a very long time. Right now they are the worst team in the AFC East, maybe a little better then the Bills, but Pats and Dolphins are way better then the Jets... No offence line, no running game, and a average at best QB. Jets suck and Ryan swallows....

Time to shut up, Fatboy Rex!

I hope the jets keep Sanchez for the next 20 years.  He stinks and you won't win anything.  The Jets went to the playoffs the past 2 years DESPITE him.  Not because of him.

I am pretty satisfied with the Jets sticking with Sanchez. This is because I am a Giants fan and love to watch the Jets lose. This guy cant throw a pass longer then 15 yards. Can't win in the NFL like this anymore. It doesn't help either that they have a dinasour for a running back. Once a T-Rex, now a Fossil.

MagicMan327 - You really know nothing about what you are spewing... First off Sanchez has improved each year.

2009 - 12 TD's  20 Picks - Rating 63.2
2010 - 17 TD's  13 Picks - Rating 75.3
2011 - 24 TD's  15 Picks - Rating 79.0

Although he has 2 more picks he has already thrown more balls than he has all last year and he also has 7 more TD's while adding only 2 Picks.
Now saying they will not contend with New England or win a Super Bowl, are you saying the Patriots are the team to beat to win a Superbowl? Until this year I believe Sanchez had a winning record vs the Patriots.
I suggest you get your facts straight before posting and if you watched the games you would see that Mark hardly has time to throw and worse you KNOW when he is throwing based on the horrible play calling of Shotty. The Jets need to get rid of Shotty and upgrade that offensive line this year. Once they do that and add a pass rusher they will return strong to the playoffs.

Let me say this about Payton Manning & the Jets , if it presented itself & Manning was healthy the Jets would be FOOLS not to go after him ! I say this as well about Payton Manning , why would`nt he want to play for the Jets ? Think about the fact his kid brother plays for the Giants are you kidding me , wouldn`t you love to play in the same town as your kid brother ??? I would think about it for a second more , both Manning QB`s playing in NYC the town would EXPLODE ! You either trade Shanchez for a defensive lineman or offensive lineman , and you use Payton for the next 3 years it is very possible . I`am a Jet fan for 42yrs and i would make the move in a NANO SECOND , if Payton Manning is healthy Mr T you better look into it ! We don`t need him in our division on another team (like Miami) , yeah just what i need to see Payton Manning & Tom Brady in our division !!!!!

from someone who isnt a jets fan,. i shouldnt have to tell you imbecil jets fans (not all of you), the defense and coaching cost them the season. Not sanchez. if baltimore could win with Dilfer, and redskins with doug williams, how could the jets not win with sanchez?

Bad example, Baltimore had one of the best defenses in history and the Skins had an All-Pro team in 1987. What your saying is, any QB can with a SB all you need is either one of the greatest defenses of all time or complete All-pro team. This is why you have very few Dilfers and Williams winning Super Bowls.

Hes exponentially better than dilfer or williams ever were, both SB winners.

Not because of them, but because of the team they played on. The Jets had a very, very good team the past two years and it carried them to the AFC champioship game..however, when you need your QB to step up an make a  play Sanchez has show he is too inconsistant. His pocket presenace is awful and his decsion making is worse.

Shottenheimer should have run all over my Giants. Challenged the Giants young line backers to make plays. Instread, u throw the call 59 times?

Agreed, bad play calling but, your saying the QB is not good enough to beat a team with an awful secondary. Look at the good passing teams and what they have done to the Giants this year...this only weakens your argument. You provide Sanchez with Holmes, Burress and Keller and he can't move the ball in the air against the 27th rank pass defense.

In giants stadium, in december?? phil simms wouldnt have ever been called on to do that, and he had the sickest arm of any giant or jet  qb in the last 30 years.

Not sure if watched the game or if you live in NY but weather was not a factor here. No strong wind gust no fridged temps...perfect conditions for football.

Blame Rex.. he talks, and talk, and puts a bullseye on his team.

So don't blame the player on the field who puts out a poor performance, blame the coach? I agree, Rex talks too much but you can't blame him for everything that's just silly.

Football is all about who wants it more. the 1990 vs buff and 2007 vs new eng giants prove the best team doesnt always win, but the team thaat is otivated and wants it more ALWAYS does, and motivation is a deciding factor. THANK REX, for giving the other team motivation. And thank his staff for 1) creating ZERO pass rush or def pressure 2) offense for not maximizing the talent on their roster. Plain and simple. Jets are no different from  say, the Wash Redskins or Dallas Cowboys.

Football is about preperation and playing smart...you execute and you increase your overall chances of winning.
