Ryan: Sanchez is 'my guy,' no interest in Manning

First there was the ProFootballTalk report that the Jets, realizing what the rest of us already knew for some time, had finally come to the conclusion that Mark Sanchez might not be a franchise quarterback. There were also reports, courtesy of's Mike Freeman, that while Sanchez may not have lived up to expectations, it's more likely that Brian Schottenheimer, the man responsible for calling 59 passing plays against the Giants Saturday, might be in more immediate danger of losing his job.

Well, good news, Mark. Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Monday that you're his guy.

“There’s no way that we’re looking to replace Mark Sanchez,” Ryan said on ESPN radio, according to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta. “There’s no doubt… If they were both out there and you were starting a draft, I would take…. Would you take Peyton Manning? Yeah, I’d take Peyton Manning over anybody. I’m not saying that….. I’m not telling that lie. Of course, I would take him. But right now, when you’re looking at our football team and our franchise, obviously we feel great about our quarterback situation. Is he going to get better, he absolutely is. Is he perfect? Not by any stretch of the imagination right now. …. But we think he has the ability to be special."

Ryan concedes that Manning, when healthy, is the NFL's best quarterback ("I even put him over Tom Brady"), but that doesn't mean the Jets would be interested in him should he and the Colts part ways this offseason.

"Do I think it’s even a consideration for us?" Ryan asked rhetorically. "No, I don’t.” He also called the PFT report "not true," and reiterated that Sanchez "is my guy."

Ryan, perhaps still caught up in the holiday season, was in a giving mood Monday; he also threw his support behind his much-maligned offensive coordinator.

"I have a huge amount of confidence in both guys," he said. "There’s no doubt. I’ve stated it over and over my feelings about Mark Sanchez. I’ve said it before. No quarterback’s going to look great when that’s all you do… you fall behind. It wasn’t Mark’s best day by any stretch of the imagination, but we know he’s done it. And he’s been doing it. We have great confidence in him and I have great confidence in him. As far as Brian Schottenheimer is concerned,  shoot, we’ll just keep working side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder and we’re trying to find a way to beat Miami. I have confidence in him. I have confidence in all our coaches. We have to find a way to get it done.”

Schottenheimer has drawn plenty criticism for his pass-heavy game plans this season, and he's frustrated Jets fans pretty much since joining the staff in 2006. Still, he's rumored to be a head coaching candidate for any number of opportunities this offseason.

For now, though, Ryan likes his chances with Sanchez and Schottenheimer. And if the Jets want to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season, they'll need a lot of help. First things first: New York has to beat the Dolphins in Week 17, and then hope for a Bengals loss to the Ravens, Titans loss or tie to the Texans, and an Oakland loss or tie to the Chargers. Or: a Jets win, Bengals loss, Titans loss or tie, and a Broncos loss or tie.

Ryan: Sanchez is 'my guy,' no interest in Manning

The fact is our o-line cannot pass block. Sanchez gets 2 seconds to throw the ball. If his prmary reciever is not open within 15 yards then the play is over unless Mark can dump down to a running back. Compare to Brady who almost always gets 5 seconds with no pressure even when everybody knows they are going to throw. There is no comparison. Against the Giants we were getting 5 to 6 yards per carry. Why stop running the ball until they show they can stop you. NYG played with 2 deep safties. At some point they would have to bring up one of those safties to stop the run and the d-line would have to stay home. Then we can throw the ball. Shotty needs to go.

After 3-4 years cant ya tell when a QB has what it takes to be a starter regardless of OC? Jets needed to pound the ball with the RB no matter what. Sanchez is much better when that happens!

Mark Sanchez has proven that he is nothing more than rebooted version of Ken O'Brien.

As a Jets fan, I'm certainly fed up with Sanchez, and there are a lot of things wrong with him. That said, I think we all need to give him ONE MORE year with a real offensive coordinator and a good game plan. That's assuming Schottenheimer gets fired which I sure as hell hope he does. The guy has been a joke from day one.

And as far as people saying Sanchez is the worst QB in the league, that's simply not true. He's really bad at times, but he's got the worst coordinator in the league calling the plays. add in the fact that he's got good mobility, is really good at playaction, and has at least an average arm, there's no way he's the worst.

Maybe it still will end up in diaster, but I want to see Schottenheimer gone first before I totally give up on Sanchez.

Mark Sanchez is the worst starting QB in the league! In three years, he has shown absolutely no improvement. Granted the Jets have gotten to the AFC Championship the previous two years, but none of that should be credited to Sanchez. This team is close but won't contend with New England or win a Super Bowl until they upgrade at QB.

My feeling is that is no way will Rex Ryan take the fall in any of this. His ego is way too big and he will do want ever it takes to deflect the blame. There is no doubt Sanchez is part of the problem, too inconsistent and seems to go small whenever he see's or feels pressure. My quess Ryan will get rid of Schottenhiemer as that is the easiest change to make and show blame. Though I think Schottenhiemer isn't all that bad, you can't be throwing 50+ times a game with a QB like Sanchez. The Jet O line is the greatest either, but the change at the OC is always the first thing, when pompous asses are involved. Sanchez should be farther along at this point in his career when it comes to reading his progressions, but that's a change Ryan would dare not make.

Ryan: Sanchez is 'my guy,' no interest in Manning

Do you watch any Jets games?  There defense cost them at least 4 games this year and has been average at best.  Rex talks a big game about his defense and they didn't do anything this year.  Their offensive line has been absolutely awful for about half the season.  That falls on Tannenbaum for releasing All Pro Damien Woods to save 2 million bucks when he was trying to sign Asomghua in the offseason.  Say what you want about Sanchez but every time he takes a 5 step drop, he gets murdered by the pass rush.  There is also no reason why Shottenheimer should be calling 62 pass plays in a game that they were averaging over 4 yards a carry running the ball.  It's time the media starts placing the blame on this coaching staff and GM.  What draft picks have worked out recently?  Havent heard Wilerson's name called all season, Kyle Wilson is feast or famine in coverage (traded up to get him), Ducasse is so bad they cant even replace Hunter with him, etc.  Not to mention the other money that was spent on players like Bart Scott and Cromartie.  Sanchez is a third year QB that has gone to the AFC championship in his first two seasons.  Not sure he is to blame for them losing all these games they should be winning.  How about they play all 60 minutes for a change instead of quarters here and there.
