Report: Mike Munchak tops Penn State search list

By Will Brinson

Titans coach Mike Munchak's done good work in Tennessee during his first season -- his team still has a longshot of snagging a Wild Card -- and it hasn't gone unnoticed, as Munchak is reportedly on the top of the search committee list for Penn State.

Nearly two months ago, Joe Paterno was fired as head coach of the Nittany Lions and according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Munchak is the "top pick of the search committee" to replace Joe Pa.

Tom Clements, the Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach, is reportedly the backup plan in the event Munchak declines to take the job with Penn State. Clements, a Notre Dame grad, has interviewed twice already, although not yet in person.

Penn State's said they're taking a "measured approach" to the search, but has said that the school wants a new coach in place before Penn State's bowl game. Given that Munchak's final regular-season game with the Titans is January 1 and the Nittany Lions play in the TicketCity Bowl on January 2, that seems like a stretch.

Munchak, drafted in the first round of the 1982 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, was an offensive lineman for Penn State from 1978-1981 and was a second-team All-American in his senior year.

"Mike would be a great fit," former Penn State running back Curt Warner said per the Post-Gazette. "He's a Penn State guy. I don't think any of his old teammates would be upset about him getting the job at all. He has my support. I'd love to see him get it."

But Munchak told Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean that he's not interested in the gig.

"Nothing is going on," Munchak said, "People like to speculate."

The question will probably come down to where Munchak's loyalty lies the most: he played with the Oilers his entire career and has coached in the organization (either with the Titans or Oilers) ever since. That's since 1983, mind you, and it's probably enough time to cancel out his four years spent in State College.

Hey chasmunch! Bury Joe Pa in the end zone? That's a bit cruel, don't you think. Only dudes like Jimmy Hoffa get that honor my man. If Penn State must put the old goat to rest in Beaver Stadium, I say chop his butt in two and bury half his body in the north end zone and the other half in the south. That way, the Nittany Lions can choose equally which direction they wish to defend if they win the coin toss.

Well any possible candidate named by the media would deny it.  It is simple to eliminate any candidate by just saying who is now the top choice....

I still have to believe there are some good college coaches that know the ropes who would jump at the chance to lead Penn State.

Hey latrops...name one who is in his right mine and wants no part of your PSU cess pool.

Whether or not Munchak would even want the job, I question Penn State in making him their top choice.  Recruiting is a huge part of being a good college coach.  Maybe Munchak would be a fine recruiter, but does a program like Penn State have to take a chance on a guy with no college coaching experience?  I know they are in the middle of a difficult situation, but I still have to believe there are some good college coaches that know the ropes who would jump at the chance to lead Penn State.

The goal of most coaches is to land a high paying pro gig which Munchak has done and has demonstrated a bit of success. So why in the world would he take a step backward to take a moderate paying college job with all the headaches of recruiting, etc? Forget the "baggage" alot of you so enjoy to point out, this would be a questionable move without the issues at hand. No way he takes this job. Just hire Bradley and lets move on.

How about this for a coaching staff:  John Cappeletti, Matt millen, Matt Bahr, Curtis Enis, DJ Dozier, KI Janna Carter, and Franco Harris as  head coach! GO LIONS!

Can all of these guys fit into a Mini-Cooper? "Cause they are all a bunch of clowns! Send in the Clowns! Maybe Matt Millen can do for the Nittany Lions what he did for the Detroit Lions....NOTHING. PSU is gonna be screwed for a long time after that mess.

PSU had better just look within...who better to clean up the lurking skeletons save someone who knows where they're hanging...just clean it up, get rid of the guys who knew and were okay w/ status quo before the sh_t hit the fan...there must be a few coaches ready to take the bull by the horns and take the reins of a perennial power house...let Joe Pa die quietly in his on campus bungalo, bury him the end zone, and get on w/ it.

...somebody better because noone in the Big 10 is gonna go easy on them come next September....I imagine a coaching staff that returning players can relate to will be key to moving on, so to speak...afterall, the kids were basicly blindsided w/ this sandusky catastrophy...I doubt seriously many are going to transfer out of PSU...I expect they have already become a Band of Brothers...

....noone expects this transition of post sandusky, but mostly, post Paterno, to be smooth, or full of wins...so an internal guy can do the best he can w/ a little slack thrown his way...the school can keep looking [and maybe land a big name guy if that's all they want, a big name guy to attract recruits...and coach] and in a few years when all the lawsuits settle, Joe Pa passes, sandusky has faced the criminal courts, the 2nd mile goes away, the showers get remodeled, then maybe we can get back to happy times in Happy Valley...

...a steady stream of "not interested..!" isn't good for pub right now...fix it, really fix it all, and then they've got something an outsider will hopefully want to be a part of...

SMU survived the 'death penalty', Marshall the plane crash, Penn State can and will survive the sandusky crimes...it's only going to be a matter of fearlessly facing the disaster, and time, lots of time.
