Munchak: 'I have no interest' in Penn State job

Earlier Wednesday, we passed along the report that Penn State's top choice to replace Joe Paterno was first-year Titans coach Mike Munchak. Penn State can't talk to him, though, because he's in the middle of a playoff run.

Not that it will really matter -- Munchak told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean on Wednesday that he has "no interest" in taking over in State College.

"I love my alma mater, but I have no interest in being the head coach at Penn State,” Munchak said. "I never want to leave Tennessee. I have a great deal of respect for Penn State and I hope they find a great coach there. But I am happy where I'm at."

This shouldn't be an entirely surprising development: Munchak's a former Nittany Lion, but he's also been involved with the Titans and/or Oilers for nearly 30 years, first as a player and then as a coach.

Plus, the Penn State job isn't exactly an easy one: taking over for Paterno involves filling impossibly big shoes and simultaneously handle a nightmare situation involving former coach Jerry Sandusky that's guaranteed to remain in the national spotlight for a lengthy period of time.

Give credit to Munchak, though, for handling these rumors well -- the former Nittany Lion's being honest with the media while also managing to support his alma mater.

"I am set where I am at," Munchak said. "I am thrilled with what I am doing. I am not interested in the Penn State job. I am interested in what happens there, and I don’t want to distance myself from Penn State. But as far as the head coaching deal, I am. I would love to be involved in my alma mater. My point is I have no interest in being the head coach there."

With Munchak (somewhat officially) turning down Penn State, the university's search committee will now reportedly take a look at Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements.

Munchak: 'I have no interest' in Penn State job

Penn State is probably going to be forced to hire someone from the B list of coaching candidates.

The Jerry Sandusky mess has turned an elite program radioactive for anyone who is not a bleeding-blue alum. Even then, a coach would be cautious about following Joe Pa.

It's hard to follow any great coach. Look how long it took Alabama to find someone who could follow Bear Bryant, or even Notre Dame after Lou Holtz.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple short-termers in Not-So-Happy Valley before the scandal mess settles down and right coach is able to get the program back on track.

Munchak: 'I have no interest' in Penn State job

As a life long Penn State fan, I sure hope the rumor that Penn State is after Tom Clements is false. I have nothing against Clements but professional coaches with no college experience have not historically done well in the college ranks.  It is a different game.  The offenses are less complicated as are the defenses.  Then there is the recruiting - the most important part of the job.  College coaches have created networks among high school coaches and other avenues to learn about and then attract high quality recruits.  Even if assistance can help with that the next coach needs to have a network of those also.  A professional coach probably doesn't.

An earlier post posed keeping Bradley for a year.  That may be the best strategy for the program.  However, the overwelming desire to clean house makes that improbable.

At this late date, it is unlikely that the next coach of Penn State will last very long.

PSU is too late, they should hire Tom Bradley for a year and try to force a fit. Do what Ohio State did after Tressel, although what happened at PSU pales in comparision to selling memorobilia for tats.

Ok let's just hire Clements already. He can lead us to 4-8 seasons in back to back to back years and then we can fire him for "not winning". Then the Sandusky scandal should be behind us. The next head coach will be following some bum at head coach rather then following the winningest D1 football coach of all time. NO ONE wants to deal with this scandal and NO ONE wants to follow in Paterno's foot steps. So bring on the next 3 or 4 years, bring on the dark years, and hopefully the light at the end of the tunnel will be the sun and not an oncoming train... At least i got to see and Orange Bowl and Rose Bowl durin my time as a student. God only knows when we'll see another big bowl game...
