Mike Pereira thinks Jon Gruden is a 'blowhard'

As the former VP of Officiating for the NFL, Fox Sports analyst Mike Pereira's been able to provide some nice insight into the world of officiating from the angle of a broadcaster. But in his latest column, he decided to go meta and play the role of media critic, harshly ripping ESPN analyst and former Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden.

In Pereira's column, which is actually focused on Gruden, the Fox analyst calls Gruden a "blowhard" who was a "loudmouth" as a coach. Pereira then writes that he has "very little respect for [Gruden] when it comes to officiating and his knowledge of the rules."

So, um, yeah, it's a bit awkward. And it could get worse -- what happens if, as our own Mike Freeman reported, Gruden comes back to coaching and returns, hypothetically, to a team like the Rams?

They play in the NFC and their games are more likely to be aired on Fox, where Pereira could have the responsibility of objectively analyzing Gruden's challenges and the interpretation of NFL rules as they apply to Gruden's hypothetical future team.

Even though Pereira says he respects Gruden's "knowledge about X's and O's when it comes to coaching and playing the game of football," but it's difficult to believe that Pereira, who appears to hold a grudge dating from Gruden's coaching days, could do so.

Pereira's beef with Gruden's interpretation of the rules relates to helmet-to-helmet hits. It's pretty obvious that Gruden simply doesn't care for the new rules; by stating that he doesn't "understand how the games are officiated" Gruden's not actually speaking to his lack of knowledge of the rules. He's speaking to his distaste for the actual rules.

With Pereira, there's no question though. His distaste is with Gruden.

Mike Pereira thinks Jon Gruden is a 'blowhard'

Gruden is a "blowhard".  I had a nice long rant at the television on Monday night as Gruden tried to compare hit's on WR's.  He was focused more on how hard the hits were rather than the potentially rule breaking elements of each hit.  He avoided the fact that one DB led with his helmet and the other led with his shoulder.  He avoided the fact the one DB initiated helmet-to-helmet contact and the other did not.  And he avoided the fact the regardless of how the officials labelled the penalty on the first hit (personal foul - hitting a defenseless receiver), the personal foul penalty was called because the first DB engaged in clearly illegal actions and the other did not, regardless of how hard the hit was.
He is opinionated, bias, and frequently wrong on his rules interpretations.  No wonder many of his former players hate him.
As a Buccaneer fan, I don't see what all the Gruden hype is about.

Mike Pereira thinks Jon Gruden is a 'blowhard'

I'm not a big fan of Gruden's, but I think he was saying the same thing about so-called helmet to helmet hits that most fans are saying, i.e. many of the calls are marginal...It seems that if a guy barely touches his helmet to another players helmet, there's a flag, even if there was no intent and no harm done.

Mike Pereira thinks Jon Gruden is a 'blowhard'

The Packers benefit from officials more than any team in the league and have for years and that is a FACT.

Mike Pereira thinks Jon Gruden is a 'blowhard'

The NFL rules about hitting have turned the game into a laughing stock and Gruden exposes that and the poor officiating every broadcast.  Pereira is doing nothing more than trying to protect his own when admonishing Gruden.  The whole game has become about protecting the big money quarterbacks and the rules and officiating reflect that.  It's almost unwatchable.  Almost.

Mike Pereira thinks Jon Gruden is a 'blowhard'

I couldn't agree with a Grudem more, some teams are singled out more than others and thats an obvious fact.Last Sunday night the Packers had a makeshift offense line yet not one penalty was called against them or the entire team, but of course they where playing the Bears a team that gets absolutely no rescpect  from the officials.IN last seasons NFC Championsip game all week long McCarthy and the Packers complained the same crew that called 18 penalties on them in a MOnday night game against the Bears was doing the game.So what happened they came out in critical situations and gave the Packers 1st downs when they should have to punt or turned the ball over. Pereira came out and kissed their sorry butts agreeing with calls even when replay didnot support the call.Right before half and interception was awarded to the Packers when the ball in replay showed it hit the ground,a very critical junction of the game and after replay called the interception good and Pereira said during the timeout it should be overuled and the Bears retain posession,he still couldn't say the ref's blew it. All officials in the NFL are corrupt one way or the other and that is a fact.

Mike Pereira thinks Jon Gruden is a 'blowhard'

It's difficult enough to wait on a challenge during the game. We don't need another talking head like Pereira giving his opinion. Even as a high school football ref I have enough common sense that a coach wants to win. That's why there are many "blowhards" out there, albeit high school, college, or the pros.

Mike Pereira thinks Jon Gruden is a 'blowhard'

Gruden was a volunteer for a pee-wee league as an assistant coach where he was booted from the STADIUM these children were playing in. This is all because of a call that Gruden didn't like.

Pereira and Gruden's issues date back to the Pats v Raiders tuck rule issue. They can claim it's about helment to helment today, but the root of the issue dates back to then.

You decide for yourself, but this guy should stay in the booth as his style of intimidation is date and archaic.

Mike Pereira thinks Jon Gruden is a 'blowhard'

At first I thought the Periera thing on Fox was a great feature and then it turned out that every single time someone calls out Periera's ref buddies for a bad call, this goes off on a rant against them. He's just a shill for the refs. They are all his pals and anyone that thinks for an instant he's going to call them out is plain crazy. He NEVER calls out the refs. It's obvious his beef with Gruden is personal rather than professional
