Jeebus. Johnson was penalized for wishing others well. (AP)

By Ryan Wilson

Stop us if you've heard this before: Stevie Johnson, the Bills' explosive wide receiver and one of the best young players in the AFC, struggles to avoid silly penalties at critical points in important games. Earlier this season, he did the "Plaxico" touchdown dance against the Jets, which involved going to the ground after pretending to shoot himself in the leg. And he was promptly flagged for excessive celebration.

Against the Patriots Sunday, Johnson caught a first-quarter touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to give the Bills a 14-0 lead (Buffalo has scored again, and now lead 21-0 late in the first quarter). But that wasn't enough. Johnson pulled up his jersey to reveal a "Happy New Year!!!!" message on his shirt. Somehow, that's an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty.

Look, we get that commissioner Roger Goodell and the folks at league HQ want a sterile, staid NFL. But isn't this a tad much? (That's rhetorical. Of course it is.)

Anyway, it's not the first time Johnson has written personal messages on undershirts. He had a note for the Bengals and the self-proclaimed Dynamic Duo a year ago.)

Silver lining: if this whole NFL thing doesn't work out, Johnson has a future wearing sandwich boards.

Stevie Johnson scores TD, gets penalty...again

I am a life long Pats fan and was watching this game when Johnson showed his undershirt.
What's next? Perhaps penalties for Tebowing? I was shocked by this penalty. Truly a joke.
Roger Goodell is going to turn the NFL into flag football for wimps soon if no-one stops him!

If you know this action is gonna cause your team to be penalized on the next play then you are a selfish A$$ hole.

The rules are written and known by all that play the game. You would have to understand this and stay within these rules.

I am not against celebrating, however, the last I knew football is and always have been a team sport.

I have never seen anyone penalized for going to their side line and celebrating with their teammates. It’s the crap done in the end zone that get penalized and taunting the other team.

I am sure that someone blocked, threw the TD pass or faked a defender out of the play for you to be successful. You should show respect for those on your team that helped make your touchdown possible. So go to your team sideline, slap high fives with your teammates, especially your linemen that get very little recognization. Hug your quarterback and other offensive players that assisted you in this play.
This guy is just plain stupid and have no respect for his teammates or the game.

When you play hardball in a lock-out you don't get any flexibility with the rules.  Its one of the many downsides of being represented by a union.  You don't get anything that isn't explicitly stated in the agreement.

Stevie Johnson is a selfish jackwagon.

Yes, the rule is silly but it's still the rules. He knows this! He's been fined and penalized twice before this. And he does it anyways! He personally costs his team 15 yards just so he can showboat.

Selfish jackwagon.

why was he wishing us a happy new year.   the overpaid, overrated wide reciever is a terrel owens wannabe.   besides  he will be watching the patriots in afew weeks in the super bowl.   his new year will suck early.   well,  i shouldn't say that.  he makes plenty of money, and couldn't care less about his team.   he is just a primadonna that really is not that good.

That is a bit crazy.....yes rules are rules, but it is ok for the Patriots TE to be running up the field towards the endzone and taunting the Bills defender...give me a break.....and then the hit on Brady just before the half when he threw the INT, now that was not a personal foul, as it costs the Bills 3 points....

That guy knew it was wrong but did it anyway.   He deserved to be punished for intentionally breaking the rules.   It's up to the players union to negotiate more flexible rules on celebrations.

F'ing rediculous! He wasn't mocking anyone or being obsessive in celebration. I would have loved to see him write "Happy New Year, Mr. Goodell", and see if he got fined.
