Report: Brian Schottenheimer to interview in Jax

SchottenheimerBy Josh Katzowitz

So far, it seems clear that the Jaguars are focusing on offensive assistant coaches to interview for their vacant coaching job.

According to the New York Daily News, Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will interview to be Jack Del Rio’s successor in Jacksonville. That interview could occur as early as next week.

Schottenheimer joins the mix along with Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey for a Jaguars team that finished last in the league in offense and that features a rookie quarterback who had a disturbingly-bad season with one of the worst receiving corps in the league.

Of course, the value of Schottenheimer isn’t exactly high right now after the Jets' failure to make the playoffs could be laid mostly at the feet of the offense, which finished 25th in yards gained. He’s also not the first Jets assistant to draw interest from a Florida team (Miami is high on defensive coordinator Mike Pettine).

The Jets have scheduled a press conference for 3 p.m. ET, and since general manager Mike Tannenbaum also is set to attend, there have been whispers that coaching changes could be made. Not that Schottenheimer is worried about it.

"I've been fired before," he said last week. "If you get in this profession, you're going to get fired. And the guys that sit there and worry about it are the guys that generally end up getting fired, because they are sitting there worried about it."

Besides, if he’s hired, he could be interviewing for a promotion anyway.

The Jets finished 25th in yards gained because 1) they could not run the ball at will; 2) Mark Sanchez's inability to lead receivers with passes and 3) the lack of field stretching WR's (and a QB with a gun to get the ball there).  Schotty calls a decent game, the Jets simply  aren't scary on offense.

He will be fine, and I bet he would field a solid offense on the Jags. They have MJD which would help big time, and I don't believe Gabbert can be worse than Sanchez.

Brian Schottenheimer has no business being a coach of any sort. HE is the reason the Jets offense is a joke, not Sanchez or the offensive line. I don't care if the Jags or anyone else takes him. So long as he's not with the Jets next season.

"Besides, if he’s hired, he could be interviewing for a promotion anyway. "

Did the Katman meant "Besides, if he's fired, he could be interviewing for a promotion anyway...." or did the Katman meant that after being hired as an OC that Brian could be promoted to HC next year when the current HC fails?

I would have thought that with a new year that the writing of the cbssports guys would have improved. It's sad that it hasn't. Hire more women writers...at least they know how to write and communicate effectively.

I agree, Rex and the others didn't look good on that show.  They spent most of the time looking for "loose food".

Right now, today, Brian Schottenheimer is better qualified to be a Head Coach than Rex Ryan, and would even be a better GM than Mike Tannenbaum.

All three were exposed during "Hard Knocks", and only Schottenheimer came away not looking and smelling like STINK.
