The Colts allowed Jim Caldwell to conduct his normal press conference on Monday, but things took a turn for the crazy on Monday afternoon when the Colts announced a 5 p.m. ET press conference and reports emerged that owner Jim Irsay decided to "clean house" and fire Bill Polian and Chris Polian. There hasn't been confirmation of whether or not the team will also fire coach Jim Caldwell.

Black Monday

That news comes from the NFL Network and it means the Colts are admitting what became obvious this year: the entire Indianapolis roster just isn't very good. Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star confirms that the Polians have been fired, but there's still no word on Caldwell.

Peyton Manning shored up many problems for the Colts, but once he was injured, the team was exposed and limped its way to a two-win season and the No. 1 overall draft pick. Polian was hired in 1997 by the Colts and won NFL Executive of the Year a whopping six times. From 1997 to 2004, he hit a number of home runs in the draft, picking up Manning, Edgerrin James, Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeney and Dallas Clark in the first round.

From then til now? Not so good: Marlin Jackson, Joseph Addai, Anthony Gonzalez, Donald Brown, Jerry Hughes and Anthony Castonzo over eight different drafts is a horrible misuse of first-round picks, even if they were near the bottom of the first round.

The Manning conundrum looms as the spiciest offseason storyline. The Polians gave Peyton his contract (and obviously drafted him) but Irsay is a tremendous supporter of his franchise quarterback. Cleaning house could mean moving onto a new era (one that will presumably feature Andrew Luck under center) ... or perhaps the Polians were prepared to move along without Manning and Irsay wasn't ready to do that.

Whatever, as Colts center Jeff Saturday told our Colts Rapid Reporter Tom James on Monday that Irsay promised him "there will be changes in the offseason." Saturday didn't know what kind of changes those would be.

They are, quite clearly, large changes. An entire overhaul of the Colts organization, in fact.

Manning made all those draft picks look good. Remember how bad Steve Smith with Carolina was without Cam Newton.  No one deserved to lose their job.  You practiced all preseason and were prepared for a precision passer and you lost your All-Pro QB.  Keep Manning and let him train Andrew Luck and let him show Andrew how it is done in the NFL.  Then slowely work him in and keep him Injury free.  You need to shore up that defense is what you need to do!

Polian sucks, Caldwell sucks, Tony Dumby sucked! The only reason any of them got a ring was Peyton Manning! Irsay is an idiot as well. I hope he brings somebody in that will coach / run the team and not just pick up his scrip's at CVS.

p;   Good riddance to Jim Caldwell.  The worst coach to ever or will ever make the Super Bowl.

Actually, that would be Bill Callahan. Trust me.

Um.  How about Barry Switzer?  The 'worst' coach to ever win a sb...
...yea off topic, but just needed to get that off my chest.

I believe that Caldwell was the 2nd WORSE coching move made in Indiana. Only behind Mike Davis as the Hoosiers Head Coach and tied with $ampson...

The Colts are in a great position to move forward here. Draft Luck with the #1 pick and an have him mentored next season by an all time great and class professional in Peyton Manning. Although its not always the most popular decision, a year or two as a second string QB in an NFL system is the best way to polish a young player into a star (ie. Aaron Rodgers).

Report: Colts Irsay fires Bill, Chris Polian

Firing Caldwell was a bad move, but firing the Polians was long over due. You don't bring in your son to run a team when you don't own it. Chris Polian proved to be more inept/out of touch than his father. According to numerous reports Jim Irsay is a great guy and is well respected by everyone in the whole football community (with the exception of the Baltimore fans he jilted when he moved his team to another place in the middle of the night).

Caldwell might not have been a successful Colts coach, but it does not help when the team's best offensive and defensive player is Peyton Manning.

A few years ago everyone said that when Tom Brady went down with an injury getting out of the tub that the Patriots were sunk. They acually played better without him.  Did the team miss a beat? Hardly...

But when Manning went down it looked like the entire Colts team forgot how to play football. Cut the whole team right now and start over. It's not good when the expansion team Texans are in better shape than an established NFL team.

Doesn't look good in Indy. Luck hasn't impressed me a bit.. $$$$$$$ is who makes the decisions though.
