The Colts allowed Jim Caldwell to conduct his normal press conference on Monday, but things took a turn for the crazy on Monday afternoon when the Colts announced a 5 p.m. ET press conference and reports emerged that owner Jim Irsay decided to "clean house" and fire Bill Polian and Chris Polian. There hasn't been confirmation of whether or not the team will also fire coach Jim Caldwell.

Black Monday

That news comes from the NFL Network and it means the Colts are admitting what became obvious this year: the entire Indianapolis roster just isn't very good. Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star confirms that the Polians have been fired, but there's still no word on Caldwell.

Peyton Manning shored up many problems for the Colts, but once he was injured, the team was exposed and limped its way to a two-win season and the No. 1 overall draft pick. Polian was hired in 1997 by the Colts and won NFL Executive of the Year a whopping six times. From 1997 to 2004, he hit a number of home runs in the draft, picking up Manning, Edgerrin James, Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeney and Dallas Clark in the first round.

From then til now? Not so good: Marlin Jackson, Joseph Addai, Anthony Gonzalez, Donald Brown, Jerry Hughes and Anthony Castonzo over eight different drafts is a horrible misuse of first-round picks, even if they were near the bottom of the first round.

The Manning conundrum looms as the spiciest offseason storyline. The Polians gave Peyton his contract (and obviously drafted him) but Irsay is a tremendous supporter of his franchise quarterback. Cleaning house could mean moving onto a new era (one that will presumably feature Andrew Luck under center) ... or perhaps the Polians were prepared to move along without Manning and Irsay wasn't ready to do that.

Whatever, as Colts center Jeff Saturday told our Colts Rapid Reporter Tom James on Monday that Irsay promised him "there will be changes in the offseason." Saturday didn't know what kind of changes those would be.

They are, quite clearly, large changes. An entire overhaul of the Colts organization, in fact.

Report: Colts 'clean house,' fire Polian family

I'm not a Colts fan but I'm surprised it took this long for Polian to get fired...their roster had a few good players, but mostly resembled a UFL roster!

LOL   Yeah, ok buddy.  A UFL roster?   C'mon.....

I have to admit it's kinda funny though what one injury did to the Colts.  Peyton Manning gets hurt and boom, it's all gone.  The team goes from a playoff team to a team drafting first overall that's firing everybody in the organization.

As a Colts fan I am thrilled to see those two gone.  Now if we could just get rid of Caldwell we can finally be done with the Dungy era and playoff disappointment.  I hope removal of the Polians indicates the Colts will be looking for a high profile coach like a Gruden or Cowher.

thelathch54, that might not be a bad idea at all and I'm a Packers fan. The question to ask is, do you get the Polians who got Manning? Or the ones who didn't keep good talent coming in, still, probably better than Angelo

This article shows that CBS writers cannot analyze themselves out of a paper bag:  The firing of the Polians means the Colts are admitting that their entire roster isn't very good.  How in hell do you jump to that conclusion?  Oh yeah, 1+1 = 5.  The firing means that Ursay was ready for a shake up but Manning isn't part of that move, despite the fact that Polian thought it did.  And when analyzing draft picks, try to keep in mind that they drafted in the late 20s every year for the past decade.  It's pretty difficult to get great stars when a team has to draft at the end.  CBS is so freaking stupid.

its about time they start to blow up this team. first polians, then caldwell, then manning. hopefully they can get some talent for manning. look at what cincy got for palmer. but teams are going to put herman munster manning through a grueling set of physicals first. can he pass the test? there were reports out of indy in mid-december that peyton's arm was "dead." you know they're going to keep that secret as long as possible.

They cut their own throat by talking about life without Payton Manning.  You don't talk about getting rid of Payton Manning and survive.  Payton is the Colts heck they might as well be named the Indy Payton's.  Maybe Payton will be the GM and hire a bunch of Payton's just like him.  All jocking aside it was evident that they dropped the ball thinking Payton wouold never get hurt.  He is getting up their in age and it is time to rebuild a more balanced and physical team going forward.  The Payton era is coming to an end and maybe that is why they were fired.  It is time to go in another direction and that is what is taking place in Indy.Cool

Hopefully this will be the big move that urges George Mcasky to put his stamp on the Bears and dump Ted Phillips and Jerry Angelo, hire the Polians as Pres. and GM.

Wow, Colts fired the Polians? I didn't see this coming, but I would be content with SD now firing A.J. and bringing the Polians in. WOW, I'm still in shock.
