Bum: Wade had tumor 'the size of a volleyball'

The Texans haven't revealed much about Wade Phillips health issue that left him sidelined for two of the team's final three games of the regular season, requesting that everyone respect Wade and his family's privacy. Well, Wade's family -- or, more specifically, his father Bum Phillips -- disclosed some details of Wade's condition recently.

According to Bob West of the Port Arther News, Bum, speaking at a Texas Bowl Gridirons Legend induction on Saturday, said that Wade had "a tumor the size of a volleyball that encompassed his kidney and his gall bladder, so he had them all taken out. He’s got a scar about this long."

Bum then, according to West, held up his hands "about a foot apart."

Bum's a friend of the old blog, so I'm not going to sit here and doubt whether or not his medical recollection is accurate. But I've sat here holding my arms in the shape of a volleyball up to my stomach and, well, it's bigger than me.

So is Wade, of course, and West writes that he's lost a lot of weight.

If Bum's description of Wade's condition is accurate -- or even close to accurate -- it's a good thing he had the surgery when he did, and it's kind of insane/impressive/terrifying that Wade's already back to coaching.

Bum: Wade had tumor 'the size of a volleyball'

Hey everybody, chill, this thread isn't about football, it's about a man's life. A man who dedicated his life to the sport of football, good clean hard football. If you pray, say one for Wade and his family.

I've had two co workers go through this same surgery in the past 13 months, both Wade Phillips age and similar body types. Not only were the tumors very large, the type of surgery is extremely common. Both are doing well at this time. I can't say that it's diet or even lifestyle but there is something wreaking havoc on the kidneys of middle age men in our countries.

I hope he does well and makes a full recovery.

He'll get lots of time off soon when the Bengals crush the Texans.

I honestly believe ABC pays people to make IDIOTIC comments on their site. I say this because there is no other explanation for a comment as ignorant as that of @STEELNIT. Either that or @STEEKLNIT is just a complete moron and simpleton.

@steelnit   I did not hear anyone from the Texans talking trash. I believe the article was about the health condition of Wade Phillips. Speaking of medical things, maybe you need an Optirectomy That would be where they cut the nerve connecting your brain from your dumbass so you would not make such ignorant, crappy comments anymore. Go and cry about your PA teams. One that did not make the playoffs, and one that will be eliminated their first game.

Glad Wade is doing better and a special thanks to Jerry Jones for firing him. You can't lay down on Cincy. I think Cincy is a harder match up for our Texans than Baltimore.  Now, that said, we have all been here before and I certainly don't want to jinx it but I think if we beat Cincy, it will be Houston Vs New England for the conference. I like our odds.

Really?  A team with a Yates or Delhomme at QB is talking trash.  It will be a pathetic, boring, playoff game.  Either team will lose their next game.

Glad to see Wade back for our Texans and we will need him. But this week playing cincy will be a piece of cake. Our defense will make Dalton wish he was back at TCU this coming weekend and this will be a cake walk for the texans. The bengals are terrible and to be honest shouldn't even be in the playoffs! The only bright spot is they have a half decent defense and oh the rookie from Georgia AJ Green will be a grat one. Oh I will give the rookie QB a few props. He did good for a rookie but he season will end this weekend and good luck in the off season cincy! GO TEXANS and beat up on the bengals on Saturday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Bum may not be exagerating.  My father-in-law had a kidney taken out 18 years ago the size of a softball.  Apparently, the kidney may be somewhat unique in allowing tumors this size to grow sometimes without metastacizing.  I hope Wade Phillips has the good fortune that my father-in-law had, living to this day on one kidney with no recurrence of the cancer.  Best of luck to Wade Phillips, who from a fan's perspective seems like a very likeable guy.
