The Steelers will face the Broncos in Sunday's wild-card game without their starting running back. Rashard Mendenhall, the team's 2008 first-round pick, has a torn ACL, according to Rapid Reporter Chuck Finder (via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). Head coach Mike Tomlin hinted after Sunday's win over the Browns that Mendenhall could be out for some time and tests have confirmed those fears.

Now Pittsburgh will lean heavily on Isaac Redman, and undrafted rookie free agent John Clay, who didn't get his first carry until Week 16 against the Rams. Veteran Mewelde Moore could also be an option if he has recovered from a knee injury suffered in San Francisco two weeks ago.

Prior to the regular-season finale in Cleveland, the biggest injury issue for the Steelers centered around the health of their franchise quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben suffered a high-ankle sprain three weeks ago during the first meeting between Pittsburgh and Cleveland. He limped his way through a loss against the 49ers but sat out last week's victory over the Rams.

In addition to Mendenhall, Pittsburgh could also be without cornerbacks Cortez Allen and Keenan Lewis, who suffered shoulder and hamstring injuries, respectively, in Cleveland. Safety Ryan Clark may also miss the Broncos game because of sickle-cell trait that is triggered when he plays football at high altitudes. His status will be decided later in the week.

Pittsburgh Steelers' running back, Isaac Redman, carried the ball 19 times for 92 yards and a touchdown in a 13-9 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Join CBS Sports' Kevin Harlan and Solomon Wilcots for a recap of all the action.

Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall has torn ACL

Not a good time of year to lose your starting running back but this is where the depth of your team comes to play...other players need to step up...I know this game was a lot closer than the Steelers wanted but late in the game they knew their fate and still kept the starters in...They were lucky nothing else happened...with that being said.. I don't think the Steelers want to see the Ravens in the playoffs, if they get that far...the Ravens will be to physical fot the Steelers to win that game

Bad news. Mendenhal is a hard runner behind a less than stellar line. Time for Redmond to step up. Hope Mendenhal heals up for next season so I can keep him on my Fantasy Roster.

Contrare to popular belief vegasrugger, the Browns have a good defense and the fumbles were an anomaly. Steeler fans should not be concerned with the Redmon fumbles as much as they should be about the walking wounded. Quality depth will be tested in game one of these playoffs against Denver. The Steelers cannot afford any new injuries or additional tweaks to current injuries or they will be in trouble fast.

The NFL Champion typically incurs the least amount of debilitating injuries to key personnel throughout the year. The talent is so close in measurables, that injuries often are the key differential between competitors. For that reason, I do not see the Steelers advancing past the elite eight. Their offensive line is in shambles again, with their most valuable linemen, Max Starks, not even on the roster at the beginning of the year. Now they have a running back injury and although my preference is Redmon over Mendenhall anyway, the coaches believed Mendenhall was better. The quarterback position is very similar. Ben R indicated he was at sixty percent health during yesterday's game, yet he played. That was a mistake in my opinion. Rest makes high ankle sprains better, not activity. Wide Receivers are the most healthy and they have had injury problems all year as well.

Defensively, the wounded start with Woodley. The Steelers need to rest him this coming week against Denver. The bigger problem is the secondary, especially with Ryan Clark's blood disorder coming into play. They are one injury away in the secondary from changing their defensive game plan.

That said, all teams have bumps and bruises to their personnel. The least injured will prevail and right now it looks like Baltimore and New England from the AFC and Green Bay, New Orleans or SF from the NFC.

I think the Steelers should just worry about the Broncos.

The NFL doesn't have a fixed bracket.  The number 1 seed will host the lowest surviving seed from the first round (seed 4, 5 or 6), while the number 2 seed will play the other team (seed 3, 4 or 5).

It is very possible that the Steelers face the Patriots in the Divisional Playoff Round.  Good luck!
