Pittsburgh will be short-handed in the secondary when they face Denver Sunday. (US PRESSWIRE)

The Steelers will face the Broncos in the wild-card round Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET and they'll do it without two of their best players. Running back Rashard Mendenhall tore his ACL against the Browns in Week 17 and his season is over. Safety Ryan Clark is healthy, at least as sea level, but a sickle-cell trait that is triggered at high altitudes will keep him on the bench in Denver (elevation 5,280 feet).

According to CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Chuck Finder, head coach Mike Tomlin said during his Tuesday press conference that playing Clark wasn’t worth the risk, especially since Clark lost a spleen and gall bladder after playing in Denver in 2007.

Pittsburgh's coach called it an "easy decision," adding “I met with Ryan Clark yesterday and informed him I’m not going to let him play for obvious reasons. It is a big game for us, but it is a game. We’ll keep it in perspective.”

Clark tweeted Tuesday: "Well I guess we all know now. I will not be playing. Glad that it's out now. So no more questions to ask. Thanks for your concern!"

Ryan Mundy, the team's 2008 sixth-round pick out of West Virginia, is expected to fill in for Clark. Mundy has two career starts, both coming in 2010 filling in for an injured Troy Polamalu. He has one career interception, which came in Week 12 against the Chiefs, as well as a 33-yard reception on a fake punt earlier this season against the Titans.

The Steelers traveled to Denver for a 2010 preseason game and Clark didn't play then, either. He worked out on the field before kickoff without incident but the fear of damage to his brain and/or heart clearly wasn't worth the potential consequences.

Uh fall2geated, get sold on the steelers winning this game. Redman is not that much of a drop off from Mendenhall, and I don't care what the Broncs pound, they will ahve to throw the ball to win and that ain't happening. Get sold on a two to three TD blowout and be comfortable. Not being a Pgh homer, just looking objectively at situation. I think next week they will be playing in Bmore and things could get ugly there again. AFC rep in Super Bowl will be Steelers or Ravens, and I will have to give edge to Ravens due to home field. With QB Texans had a shot, but just too banged up, and Pats D will do them in.

Don't write off the Broncos just yet you experts.   I personally think Denver has a real shot on this game, especially with Big Ben still with a bumb wheel, and Mendy done now this dude with the Sickle Cell deal.   Think NFL wants Tebow to win as the ratings will go through the roof.   Tomlin must have been paid off to try and let Tebow win.....  Heck Tyler Palko almost beat the steelers a few weeks ago.....

When I first started reading the comments I thought CaCa was making a really awful attempt to troll everyone, and it really wasn't that funny.  By the time I finished reading the comments I thought CaCa's posts were hilarious after seeing how upset people got over them.  I'm actually debating if people who got upset are actually trolling also.  I have a really hard time bealieving anyone actually took those comments seriously.

They only need 1 CB and a Safety against Denver, they should just stock up on LB/DL types cause Tebow ain't throwing more than 20 passes.

Kudos to Mike Tomlin and the Steeler organization for putting the welfare and well being of this young man over the drive to a championship.   Not sure how many other teams would do the same thing especially for a playoff game!  I am not a Steeler fan but I have always respected Mike Tomlin since they elevated him to the head coach role.  Always treats his players, the opposition, and the game with a great amount of respect!

You could replace Clark with Mr. Ed and Teblow couldn't take advantage.  I am sorry to hear of Clark's disease, though--best of luck to him.

he just made a bad joke since it's OBVIOUS that he wasn't going to play and he was just making sarcasm towards the IDIOT 'Media' Speculation that he might
In opposition of JJAG, I do not support Caca's dangerous comments...

All I can say for Cacafaced is that he is either an idiot or some troll just stirring the pot because the way he is thinking is irresponsible to say the least.

Football is a game, people.  Just like any other sport. No one mans life is less important than a game.  He had his gall bladder and spleen taken out for playing in the last game. What is going to happen if he plays another game? Death? We do not know and Tomlin is definately taken the right stance to this.  Yes if it was up to Clark he would risk it but like I said before no game is more important to someones health.  Just need to grow up.

I would love to see Clark out there but Tomlin is doing the right thing.  BlackNGold, you are further from the truth.  We can not sit Ben because doing so is we are looking ahead and this isn't high school.  Denver can beat anybody and any team can beat anybody on any given day.  Ben is going to be in there and he is going to be alright.  Woodley will be back so hopefully we can get to Tebow early cause a turnover or two and get out there with a win.

Good Job Tomlin.  Right decision.
