Report: Raheem Morris spotted with Redskins

MorrisBy Josh Katzowitz

Raheem Morris made his name originally on the defensive side of the ball, and he was so impressive in his two years as the Buccaneers defensive backs coach, Tampa Bay ownership hired him as the head coach three years ago.

Of course, that experiment backfired, as Morris went 17-31 in his three years (including a 10-game losing streak to end his tenure Monday), but that doesn’t mean other teams won’t take a look at Morris’ defensive skills.

According to George Wallace of WTOP radio in Washington, it’s already begun as Morris was spotted dining with “Redskins brass.” Morris and Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan were young assistants together in Tampa Bay in 2004-05, so there is some familiarity there (in fact Shanahan was arrested and charged with misdemeanor intoxication after he and Morris were escorted from an Indianapolis bar). Also, Redskins general manager Bruce Allen was the GM in Tampa Bay during the time both assistants were together.

So, the union could make sense from a former relationship standponit.

The only problem with the Redskins’ apparent pursuit of Morris to shore up a Washington defense that finished 21st in points allowed this year? The Buccaneers defense finished last in the league in points allowed and gave up at least 35 points in seven of the final 12 games of the season.

Report: Raheem Morris spotted with Redskins

The Redskins are not looking to hire him as a HC or DC, they are looking for an Asst Def Coordinator in charge of defensive backs. He likely will not be offered a DC job anywhere this year, so this may be a nice familiar job to take until he becomes a hot item again. Lord knows if he could shore up our DB's then he would again gain credibility at least as somones DC.

The Redskins aren't looking to hire a head coach. No idea where you got that from.

USF: read the article. It's about Morris as possible D.C. not head coach. He was seen with the son of Redskin's head coach.

The NFL still has a rule in place that requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate when they have a head coach vacancy. It's called the Rooney Rule.

Morris jumped from a position coach, (DB) to head coach without ever being a coordinator in the NFL. I think he'll be a fine defensive coordinator, but head coaching needs to be put on hold for a while. (Note: he was a DC in college for one year at Kansas State)

The Redskins probably have no intention of hiring Morris as a head coach. Isn't affirmative action just swell?

As a die-hard lifelong Washington Redskins fan I don't care who they bring in to do what, it's time to win! The losing sucks and if they bring in Joe Blow I don't care as long as the results on the field improve because that's all that matters to Redskins Nation!

I will always wonder why the Buc's owners fired Jon Gruden, worst decision ever.

If this means having a better defense, that's great.  Weren't the Redskins still finalizing the conversion from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense?  Wouldn't that take more than a couple of years to be elite?  Haslet seemed to be doing a good job.  If the 'Skins really wanted to make their defense better, they would improve the offense to keep the defense off of the field.

As a Washington native, I'd love this hire. The locals love to rag on Haslett, who is a UFL coach refugee. I'm not sure if Morris runs a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense though. If he runs a 4-3, it will be quite irritating as the redskins dumped some successful 4-3 players in migrating to the new scheme.

Why I mainly love the hire is because I think he could be a coach in waiting in 2-3 years after Shanahan is done. People say that old school coaches don't win. I.E. Shanahan, Wade Philips, Jeff Fisher, etc. etc.

I'd love to see some new, youthful, Mike Tomlin-like energy in Washington for once. "YEA I SAID IT"
