Report: Raheem Morris spotted with Redskins

MorrisBy Josh Katzowitz

Raheem Morris made his name originally on the defensive side of the ball, and he was so impressive in his two years as the Buccaneers defensive backs coach, Tampa Bay ownership hired him as the head coach three years ago.

Of course, that experiment backfired, as Morris went 17-31 in his three years (including a 10-game losing streak to end his tenure Monday), but that doesn’t mean other teams won’t take a look at Morris’ defensive skills.

According to George Wallace of WTOP radio in Washington, it’s already begun as Morris was spotted dining with “Redskins brass.” Morris and Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan were young assistants together in Tampa Bay in 2004-05, so there is some familiarity there (in fact Shanahan was arrested and charged with misdemeanor intoxication after he and Morris were escorted from an Indianapolis bar). Also, Redskins general manager Bruce Allen was the GM in Tampa Bay during the time both assistants were together.

So, the union could make sense from a former relationship standponit.

The only problem with the Redskins’ apparent pursuit of Morris to shore up a Washington defense that finished 21st in points allowed this year? The Buccaneers defense finished last in the league in points allowed and gave up at least 35 points in seven of the final 12 games of the season.

Nothing wrong with blitzing on 3rd and 20 if your guy can get there and you force the hot read then make the tackle. That is how it is suppose to work. How many times do you see these guys in the "prevent defense", as we all know all it does is prevent you from winning.
You don't have to go "prevent defense", but you shouldn't rush 8 like Haslett was doing after it bit him in the ass before...Good coaches know what their players can or can't do...

Nicodemis555: you ever go to Six Flags and pay to park? THAT is where he got so wealthy. The guy probably sold sponsorship rights to the birth of his children. I don't know the man personally, but I can reasonably infer from all that I've read and heard from him that he cares only about money; therefore, as long as the 'Skins are profitable, which they are, why would he care about winning? Answer: he doesn't, and by now it should be patently obvious.

I hope that Morris lands on his feet in a good position with a good team. I still support him, though I thought the players in Tampa Bay gave up on him and failed to play to their potential.

I can see, with a little more experience, him being a head coach in another place. The good ones learn and become better. I think Morris is one of the good ones out there.

Perhaps he should have spoke with Tomlin of the Steelers and Tony Dungey about being a head coach. This might have given him some insight as to how to keep the players playing at their peak and not appear to be a buddy buddy with them. This I think might have been the problem during his stay in Tampa Bay.

Please just be for a DB coach! The problem is the QB we got out of a Cracker Jack Box. Mike Shannahan is letting his kid kill the Skins. I understand the owner is trying to look good and not fire every coach we get but all Mike wants to do is let his kid run the show. The apple just fell to far from the tree on this one.

As expected, Jim Haslett appears to be on his way out.  Look into my crystal ball: Raheem Morris will be the future interim head coach after Danny fires Mike Shanahan 11 games into the next season (after a 4-7 record).  The revolving door of coaches continue and the Redskins continue to be consistently inconsistent.  Hooray!

I prefer an aggressive defense if you have the correct guys and the right scheme. Unfortunately the Skins and the Jets seem to be missing those guys. :-(
The worst part about this is as far as I know that your DC did not resign or get fired so not to much fun if you are Jim and reading this article.

The only problem is the already HAVE a defensive coordinator!  He might not produce positive results, but Haslett has the job that Morris is looking for!
