Josh McDaniels will join New England immediately (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

With the news that Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien has taken the Penn State head coaching job, we told you Josh McDaniels was scheduled to interview for his old job in New England. The Associated Press has confirmed that not only will McDaniels get that job, beginning in 2012, but he’ll join the team immediately in time for this year’s playoffs.

The story was originally reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

McDaniels had a terrible year in his only season as the Rams offensive coordinator -- St. Louis ranked 31st in yards gained and dead last in points scored -- but he had so much success previously in New England that the move makes perfect sense from  a Patriots perspective. O'Brien, meanwhile, will return to New England until the season is finished.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News
Ever since leaving New England, though, McDaniels hasn't had a real good run of success. When he took over the Broncos head coaching job, the team started the year 6-0, but during the rest of the 2009 season and into 2010, Denver lost 17 of 22 games. He was fired 13 games into last season. Then, he took the Rams offensive coordinator job under head coach Steve Spagnuolo, but that offense, through injuries and a unit that had a tough time adjusting to the new scheme, was a disaster.

Now, McDaniels returns to the position he held from 2006-08, when the Patriots never finished lower than 11th in total offense and were the top NFL offense in 2007.

The Patriots are the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and they won't have to play until next Saturday in Foxboro, so McDaniels would have at least a week to reingratiate himself to the team. As CSNNE's Tom E. Curran retweets, McDaniels' offense already has faced the Steelers, Ravens, Bengals, Packers and Saints this year, and that would help New England's prep if it has to face those squads in the postseason (out of those teams, the Patriots have played only Pittsburgh this year).

Wow.  So many uneducated jealous posts it's comical.  "Brady has made a lot of complete idiots look good".  "How the hell is this guy still coaching? He's destroyed every team he's touched".  Did you people forget where he took a chance - Denver & St Louis?  Hmm, because of his DRAFT decisions at Denver = playoffs (oh ehh oh TEBOW) and regarding St Louis they are also rebuilding.  Your word describes all of you well” Idiots”...

Naive. Starting with a comment that Brady a future HoF QB is average shows you to be a bit of a homer.  It's called chemistry.  Brady, Belichick, McDaniels, etc... the sum is greater than the parts.  Individually, they may not be nearly as good as they have SHOWN themselves to be over the past decade.  McDaniels may not be a good HC but he has played his part in the success of the dynasty.

BTW: Defenses haven't really "shut Gronkowski down" this year as much as the Pats have conceded the coverage to... say... let Hernandez have 100+ yds and a maybe a TD... that is in addition to Gronkowski's 60+yds and maybe a TD he gets as well.  In the three games they lost... Gronkowski has an average of about 100yds and a TD.

Yeah, he was only the OC when Brady & Moss were setting records for offense in the NFL.
He's no good at all, he may have made some mistakes in denver as HC but a lot of coahes don't do well their first shot at being a HC.
As for his time in St. Louis maybe if your Oline had protected Bradford even the tiniest bit or if your RB wasn't injured all the time thereby negating your running game to nothing and thus making the team one dimensional and Bradford having to carry the ENTIRE load maybe that might have had something to do with St. Louis dismal record on offense.
Also, the last time I checked he didn't coach the defense so why did St. Louis give up so many points this season? Wasn't that part of the reason the Rams did so poorly this season?
Don't get me wrong, Sam Bradford is an amazing talent at QB but he, like any other QB MUST be protected to be at his best and for some reason the rams young OL didn't do that, I was in particular disappointed by Saffold, I thought he would have played better and still think he will be an all pro in the league but this season he and the rest of the line left Bradford out to dry.
You can't blame it all on McDaniels, as fashionable as it is to do that you just can't, look at all the factors I named and you'll see there was plenty of blame to go around for the miserable season the rams experienced.

How the hell is this guy still coaching? He's destroyed every team he's touched. Denver badly, because he had to much power and to little football knowedge, and St. Louis, thank god for you he was only the OC and didn't get the chance to get rid of half your player. I guess this means that the Patriots are screwed this playoff season.
