Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

IrsayBy Josh Katzowitz

With Colts owner Jim Irsay currently looking for a general manager to replace Chris Polian, who was fired along with his father Bill last week, he won’t have to ask anybody he interviews how they’d handle the 2012 No. 1 draft pick. That’s because he already knows what he wants, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

As has long been suspected, the Colts reportedly will choose Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in April, and no matter who’s brought in to take over for the Polian’s, that decision will not be altered.

Some wondered if the reason Bill Polian was fired in the first place was because he and Peyton Manning weren’t getting along -- Irsay is an unabashed fan of his quarterback and thinks of him as family. Polian said the rumors of a rift were untrue.

"He was the first person into the office after it happened," Polian told the Associated Press on Wednesdasy. "There's no rift at all. None.

Now, though, the big questions continue to be what the Colts actually will do about Manning, who’s due a $28 million bonus in March. Would Manning want to play with Luck? Will Manning's neck be healthy? Would the Colts ship Manning somewhere else to give Luck the chance to play immediately?

Now that we seemingly know who the Colts will take with the No. 1 pick, we might have to wait a few more months before the rest of those other questions can be answered.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

Peyton Manning is one hit away from career over. The Colts have many more problems than Manning by himself can fix. Sure he's been great, but they even let Montana go in San Francisco at the end of his career. At that time the 49ers still had a good team around and Montana could have won another Super Bowl. Why do so mant people think Manning was the only great QB to ever play the game?

Manning passed for 33 tds and over 4700 yards last year.  He is still one of the top 5 qbs in the league.  He has a good 5 years left in him.  He has never really had a good defense, or a good RB.  He would have 3 SB rings if he was playing for Baltimore, or even the Vikings.

to all the people saying.. "draft luck & let him sit behind manning for 2 yrs," i say.. WTF! listen, this isn't the 80's or the 90's.. the QB rules HAVE CHANGED in case you haven't noticed.. #1 QB's come in & start immediately.. Cam Newton, Stafford, Bradford, hell even Dalton for Cincy. why the hell would you draft a #1 overall pick & immediately bench that potential productivity??? pay manning $28MIL?! uhhhh, indy, in case u haven't noticed.. your team REALLY SUX. u need: 1) a defense 2) an offensive line and last but not least 3) a RB. so tie up all your money in Manning & Luck. And watch manning get killed, literally while he limps to a 4-12 record. didn't anyone notice the way manning played towards the end of 2010? scared. that sunday night game vs. the chargers, he was flinching & taking phantom sacks to avoid getting hit. how many "ducks" did he throw vs. the raiders, then the jets.. alot. manning was great, but he's damaged goods at this point. trade him to the highest bidder (sucker.) stock pile for the future. p.s. fire that dummy caldwell and hire a real coach.

This really isn't a big deal- Manning has at most 3 years left in the NFL. The Colts can do the following in the next 3 years and still remain competive without pissing anyone off and allowing Luck to be god in the NFL: (1) let manning be the starter for the next 3 years until he retires, all-the-while he's teaching luck from the bench (ala Aaron Rodgers learning from favre); (2) use the next 3 years to clear cap room- get rid of older veterans who are past their prime (Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeny, Saturday); (3) upgrade weakness via draft and free agency to acquire young talent to put around luck- a young star WR, young line, etc; (4) give luck a clean start with a young but quality group around him....

Manning will retire as a colt and a hallf of famer, luck will be ready to be a starter in the NFL, and the colts will remain competitive during the transition. That's what I would do as the GM.

Manning still has that huge contract with 28 million option in March. It's hard to imagine if they draft Luck, that he'll be sitting on the pine behind Manning for a year or two.

Ok.  This must be official then.  I can't imagine an NFL team putting out misinformation about their draft intentions.  The Rams are on the clock.

Even if they trade him to a "dog" that "dog" now becomes a contender.  Even if he goes to KC or Cleveland or Minnesota or some other organization he turns them into an instant playoff contender.  I'm not saying they should get rid of him, I'm just saying even the worst teams in the league are a healthy Peyton Manning away from being a playoff contender.  Including Indy.....
