'Healthy' Derrick Mason retires

MasonBy Josh Katzowitz

After a season in which Derrick Mason supposedly took part in a mutiny attempt against Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, got traded to the Texans for a low-round draft pick, and watched as Houston released him after an ineffective stint, Mason has decided he’s had enough.

"I'm done," Mason told "I won't be playing football. I only knew one play to play football, going all-out and having fun out there."

Sounds like 2011 wasn’t such a blast for Mason, who recorded only 19 catches for 170 yards in the 15th year of his two-time Pro Bowl career.

Though it ended quietly -- he was released by the Ravens in the preseason before he was traded and then waived -- Mason can take solace in his more-than-solid career: he finished with 943 receptions, 11th-best all-time, and 17,150 all-purpose yards (14th-best).

As such, he’s got no regrets about leaving the game.

"That's one thing, I leave it healthy and able to run and walk and not take a half-hour or 45 minutes to get out of bed," Mason said. "I can jump right out of the bed and go. I don't have lingering pains as of now. Me leaving now, even though it didn't happen the way I wanted it to happen, I had a good run. It was fun while it lasted."

I completely agree, He was a compiler, never a dominant player and very similar to Hines Ward. The only reason Ward has a chance to get into the HOF is because he was a leader on 2 superbowl winning teams as their #1 receiver.

Good long career. Like Hines ward he compiled nice stats and played for a long time. He and Ward aren't HOF'ers but they were very good players.

Steeler fan, here.  Derrick Mason caused me lots of heartache over the years, first with the Titans, then with the Ravens.  I loved watching him play.  I'm glad to hear him get out now while he's still healthy and able to enjoy life.  Good luck Derrick, it's been a good ride!

Great career, but not one of the all-yime greats IMO. He`ll go down in the Jorge Posada hall of not quite good enough.

'Healthy' Derrick Mason retires

As a Ravens fan, I wish Derrick Mason all the best of luck in his retirement. While past his prime, he was a very productive player as a safety net for QB Joe Flacco during his time here. Thanks for everything, D-Mase
