As you've likely realized by now, Brian Schottenheimer is out as the offensive coordinator of the Jets and reports are that Tony Sparano's on his way in. So the team's in upheaval right now. It won't help matters that some Jets players anonymously and publicly ripped quarterback Mark Sanchez on Wednesday morning.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News has the story, and it's a doozy, with Jets players referring to Sanchez as "lazy," a "baby" and someone that can't win in New York.

Nightmare in New York

“We have to bring in another quarterback that will make him work at practice,” one player told Mehta. "He’s lazy and content because he knows he’s not going to be benched."

Mehta also writes that the "consensus among players" he spoke to is that the Jets need a change at quarterback, or at least a capable veteran to push Sanchez into better performances.

And the top choice for that veteran position seems to be ... Peyton Manning!

“We already have his coach — Tom Moore," one player, who Mehta calls well-respected, said. "Plus, he’s a field general and will get everyone lined up. He will get his playmakers the ball. We can win a Super Bowl with Peyton."

The issue with Peyton is that it's not as simple as "grabbing him and dumping Sanchez." First, Manning has to get cut/released/put on the trading block by the Colts. Then he has to want to come to the Jets.

Whatever, it could happen, but let's not put the cart before the horse, especially when it requires Manning wanting to play in the same locker room that just firmly shoved its current quarterback (and erstwhile leader) under the bus, calling him a "baby" in the process.

"They don’t want to be truthful with him," one player said about the way the team handled Sanchez. "They treat him like a baby instead of a man. He goes in a hole when someone tells him the truth."

See, looks like a really fun place to play. Come on down Peyton. But really, anonymously shredding the starting quarterback for a team -- besides being, ironically, lazy in its own right -- doesn't usually mean that there only needs to be one change.

UPDATED (7:33 p.m. ET): One of Sanchez's teammates has come to the rescue. That would be center Nick Mangold who tweeted today that Sanchez's accuser should "man up" and put his name with his criticism.

"That's just wrong," said Mangold, when asked today by ESPN about the comment that Sanchez was lazy. "I've never seen anybody work as hard as Mark has. I support him fully and I think the locker room does as well."

This team is chock full of blustery morons. I see a 3 win season on it's way. Love it.

I am a BIG Rex Ryan fan, but the truth is this season coming up should be his last chance to clean things up.

I like Rex because he has given the Jets some swagger, a little confidence. The Jets are indeed the Clippers of the NFL.  Both teams play in Staples, but everyone knows that it is truly the home of the Lakers, the Clippers just play there when the Lakers have a night off.  The Lakers are steeped with tradition and championship, the Clippers have been around for decades but their lists of all-time greats can be counted on one hand (generously).  To be a Laker fan is cool, to be a Clipper fan inspires the question "why?".  The same things can be said for the Jets (Met Life stadium is STILL Giant stadium - the Jets have to cover up the Giants' championship displays for Jet home games - how sad is that).  Confidence and self esteem go a long way in sports - football probably even more so than basketball.

Having said that, Rex has to get things going in the right direction NOW.  His bravado was necessary to get the Jets and their fans to believe that bigger things were possible. You live with a guy "coloring outside of the lines" if you like the picture in the end.  Phil Jackson in basketball never did things by the book, but he won, so he did not have to do things the way everyone else did.  Rex looked like he was headed towards early success, so you have to give him some rope.  I don't hold his predictions against him, but he has definitely gone outside the lines indvidually (giving the finger to the fans at a wrestling match 2 years ago, cursing out the fan leaving the field after losing to the Patriots this year) and the players are no longer buying in to the "us vs. the world" thing (as evident by them throwing Sanchez under the bus....  anonymously, not to mention Santonio Holmes being benched for the last two minutes of a must-have football game in week 17).

I think two trips to the AFC championship game appearances should earn your unorthodox methods the leeway to handle one 8-8 season, but probably not two.  Rex better make it DEEP into the playoffs next year.

My prediction?  He cannot do it.  The Jets player/personel decisions (whether its Rex or not) do not instill confidence that the Jets will be able to address the MANY areas in which they need to improve.  The Jets are old and slow, have injury prone safeties and no pass rush.   Their TE is trash, their wide receivers are a disaster, their offensive line is terrible, and need to upgrade both running backs.  All of those things need to happen BEFORE addressing the very suspect Mark Sanchez.  I do not think it is posslble to address all of those needs in one summer, and with the disarray in the locker room, I think the Jets will be introducing a new coach in less than 365 days.

Does anyone really think Peyton would play for Rex Ryan?

I'm not saying Rex Ryan is a horrible coach, he's obviously an intelligent guy, granted his pride seems to turn his intelligence into foolishness. But, he's a loud-mouth and a trash-talker.

Peyton a) is anything but a trash-talker, he just prepares and plays his heart out and b) has had much greater success playing under guys who are like him. Jim Mora wasn't a good match with Peyton.  Dungy was perfect.  Caldwell, if he didn't have his own early coaching gaffes, was/is a good fit for Peyton and he's much like Dungy (minus all the experience and great decisions that come with it).

I can't see Peyton Manning walking into the mess that is the New York Jets right now.

That being said...if he did, they are instant contenders again.

That being said, I'd LOVE to see Peyton end up with the Baltimore Ravens.  Harbaugh fits his personality and all the Ravens need is a QB to win a Championship. Maybe the Ravens still need this year's playoffs to figure out that Flacco isn't the answer at QB, but they will, and when they do, they'll be in the Peyton Manning hunt as well!

Anonymous comments to the media are a joke.  If you don’t have the stones to put your name next to your words crawl under back under your rock.  There is no way Manning willingly ends up the same locker room with these jokers.  Ownership needs to put Ryan that his crap will no longer be tolerated- he needs to shut, coach and win. The current team needs to be given one more year to win and if they don’t sell of the parts (including Ryan) and start over.

Go to your coach first, then, if nothing is done about it, then you should go public, but don't hide behind the writer...if you're a MAN, man-up and say these things non-anonymously.

Maybe Sanchez is or isn't lazy, but I question the credibility of someone who is hiding behind a writer.

desercat .... yeah yankee stadium houses some real crap fans, same as Giants, but the worst i have ever been in was Pittsburg. There was a family of 4, man, woman and 2 kids about 10 or so that had to leave the game by halftime. The Steeler fans in the row above them were dumping beers on the kids and the vulgarities comming out thier mouths would have been censored from a porn movie.

Funny...You call him out for not acting iike or being treated like a man, yet you hide behind anonymity. These guys are just as spineless as someone who doesn't speak up at all, probably even more so. It's a pathetic last ditch attempt at deflecting blame, and even if it's true, it is proof of the lack of integrity in the locker room. They have the ego of a champion, but nothing else that deserves the word.
