As you've likely realized by now, Brian Schottenheimer is out as the offensive coordinator of the Jets and reports are that Tony Sparano's on his way in. So the team's in upheaval right now. It won't help matters that some Jets players anonymously and publicly ripped quarterback Mark Sanchez on Wednesday morning.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News has the story, and it's a doozy, with Jets players referring to Sanchez as "lazy," a "baby" and someone that can't win in New York.

Nightmare in New York

“We have to bring in another quarterback that will make him work at practice,” one player told Mehta. "He’s lazy and content because he knows he’s not going to be benched."

Mehta also writes that the "consensus among players" he spoke to is that the Jets need a change at quarterback, or at least a capable veteran to push Sanchez into better performances.

And the top choice for that veteran position seems to be ... Peyton Manning!

“We already have his coach — Tom Moore," one player, who Mehta calls well-respected, said. "Plus, he’s a field general and will get everyone lined up. He will get his playmakers the ball. We can win a Super Bowl with Peyton."

The issue with Peyton is that it's not as simple as "grabbing him and dumping Sanchez." First, Manning has to get cut/released/put on the trading block by the Colts. Then he has to want to come to the Jets.

Whatever, it could happen, but let's not put the cart before the horse, especially when it requires Manning wanting to play in the same locker room that just firmly shoved its current quarterback (and erstwhile leader) under the bus, calling him a "baby" in the process.

"They don’t want to be truthful with him," one player said about the way the team handled Sanchez. "They treat him like a baby instead of a man. He goes in a hole when someone tells him the truth."

See, looks like a really fun place to play. Come on down Peyton. But really, anonymously shredding the starting quarterback for a team -- besides being, ironically, lazy in its own right -- doesn't usually mean that there only needs to be one change.

UPDATED (7:33 p.m. ET): One of Sanchez's teammates has come to the rescue. That would be center Nick Mangold who tweeted today that Sanchez's accuser should "man up" and put his name with his criticism.

"That's just wrong," said Mangold, when asked today by ESPN about the comment that Sanchez was lazy. "I've never seen anybody work as hard as Mark has. I support him fully and I think the locker room does as well."

As a Pats fan, that would suck if Manning ended up on the Jets next year.  I think the Pats should try and get Manning..-- to back up Brady.

Sounds like the Jets need to clean up their locker room and hold their coach not OC responsible for the implosion of the team.  Jet fans can dream, but the only way Manning comes to New Jersey is if he gets to pick the coach and it isn't going to be Rex Ryan.

Well, this sure is a nice day to be a Giants fan. Remember when you J-E-T-S fans were going to be the kings of new york? We were going to be the "little brother" and the JETS were going to own this town??? Well, we still have the newest, shiniest super bowl ring and you guys are home watching the playoffs. Coach Coughlin may not be flashy or a brash, but he gets the team ready to do their talking ON THE FIELD where it matters. Take a lesson JETS management and JET Fans from the Maras on how to run a franchise the right way.

I also agree with the need to either motivate Sanchez or let him go.  If he were playing any other position, we'd have no problem ripping him.  Just because he's the QB we should temper our dislike.  Not in NY.  He's accountable for the terrible season he had.  In is inexcuseable his play this year.  I don't know if Manning is the answer, but do agree that someone needs to challenge him.  He's not the only one to blame, we need to include the running backs, O-line, OC, Rex, Tannenbaum and Woody.

Jeez, this team is screwed up. What a bunch primadonas. I am not a Pats or Jets fan, but I can see this is bad news. "We can win a Superbowl with Peyton." Seriously!? So can the Roughriders. And by throwing their QB under the bus it will prevent a premier QB from wanting to go there. Talk about stupid...

As a person who grew up in NY/NJ i enjoy the Jets falling apart, even sweeter that im a Dolphins fan. But as any NYer knows there are classes for the 2 main sports and 2 main teams in NY/NJ....In the NFL...the Giants fans are high class fans games u take ur family too. But Jets fans are the Whitetrash of the city, u never wanna take ur kids or wife to a game there since 80 percent of them are drunk and throwing shit before they enter the stadium. And yes my name on here is bt that was a joke when i joined my fantasy league 18 years ago. anyway...same with baseball, NYY fans are the highclass -granted annoying as hell sometimes but they have class and respect the game and the fans at the game no matter who u cheer for., unlike the Mets fans who are stright trash.

I think its cowardly for all these guys to anonymously rip Sanchize. Either keep it to yourself, or publicly come out and own up to these qoutes!

I don't think Sanchez will be great or anything but MAN, how obvious is it that Ryan completely lost control and respect of his team? I mean, losing breeds discontent, so it's understandable, but this has been such a downfall for such a "confident" group of players entering the season. Just goes to show that bravado will only bring your ego to the top...and once that has been proven misplaced, everything collapses.

Unlike the squeaky clean Pats??  Are you kidding.  You cheat by taping other teams, you just broke NFL rules by hiring McDaniels (the league love Tom so they say nothing)  What other people are they blaming?   Who did they rat out?  Whats wrong with critizing your own players?  Perhaps your memory doesn't go back to the pre-Tom era, but talk about disfunctional teams.  I think it's awesome that Pats fans are more interested in my team than their own playoff game on Sunday.

Jets players rip 'lazy' Mark Sanchez, want Peyton

I've been posting this for months. The locker room just got fed up, especially after seeing their OC get canned (let's be real, they told him either quit or we fire you) and the lazy QB getting protected, people were going to finally say something. It's one thing to keep things in house during a season, but it's another when someone lost their job because of a lazy, coddled, overpaid scrub of a "leader" at the most important position. Nobody wants to get fired over someone else's incompetence.

Sanchez is like an inept middle manager that is dragging your department down. Nobody wants to be in that department because they will get dragged down, no matter how talented they are. Holmes got frustrated over it, in the real world, Holmes would have just jumped ship halfway through the year to a better company or department if his current company knew he was that talented. Schotty was one rung above him and got blamed for it. Eventually the people at the very top (Rex Ryan, the GM) will start taking heat too for it. And if the ineptitude goes even higher than that, you have the Redskins, Cowboys and former Raiders franchises with inept owners that will make it so you can never ever win, because they won't get rid of the bad talent.
