Ryan Grigson, the Eagles director of player personnel, was named the next general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, the team announced on Wednesday.

Grigson interviewed for a second time in Indianapolis on Tuesday and emerged as the favorite to land the job.

There are a number of issues Grigson will face when he steps into his new role, but the two hardest decisions may not even be on him. Colts owner Jim Irsay's said that he'll be handling the call as to whether or not Peyton Manning is retained and it's believed that the Colts are all but locked-in on Andrew Luck as the No. 1-overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

One interesting aspect of Grigson leaving the Eagles after nine years is what will happen with Jim Caldwell. Caldwell's job is still safe, in theory, but it's hard to imagine that a new general manager would want an old coach running the show.

It may depend on what ends up happening with Manning, but Albert Breer of the NFL Network points to an interesting name: Marty Mornhinweg, the Eagles offensive coordinator.

Mornhinweg got a shot at a head-coaching gig once, but it didn't turn out too well: he went 5-27 with the Detroit Lions in 2001 and 2002.

It's believed that, at the very least, Grigson will end up bringing along some personnel with him to Indy, which could make for some interesting changes in Philadelphia as well. Grigson was promoted to director of player personnel in 2010 after four years as the director of college scouting.

Speeder,

I would expect Irsay to insist he is taking Luck, regardless of his feelings.  If he says he is definitely going to part with the pick, it loses value.  If he says he is keeping it AND Manning, then people have to bid a bit higher to wrest it from him.  Now, he could be truthful, and plan on taking Luck, but he would never say he isn't.  Of course, nobody in the NFL listens to the "rumors" that go around in the months before the draft, anyway...

The EAGLES are a well run organization.  They turn significant profits and enjoy strong attendance.  They have built themselves into the top 5 most valuable franchises.

They have produced 9 of 12 seasons in the playoffs.  Even when they miss the playoffs it is usually 8-8 like this season.

If you can secure a GM who gets you into the playoffs 75% of the time AND produces strong financials, I don't see it being that bad.

They haven't gotten over the hump and won.  But, you need an organization that puts you in the mix every year.

Absolutely not!  Count me out!  I would much rather take a couple of seasons of 3-13 or 4-14 to get to the Super Bowl and win one than spend a decade and a half being told the team is always competitive but never winning the big game.  There's a reason the NFL has a championship game at the end of the season and every team should be disappointed if they can't get to and win that game.

If I were an Eagle fan I would hate the sight of Andy Reid.  He is the walking, talking epitomy of wanting to be good enough but never the best.  Who really cares if you're winning 70% of your games if you never win a title?  I could care less if my team is profitable.  I want Lombardi trophies, not consolation press conferences.

Mornhinweg was a laughing stock from day 1 in Detroit.  Eagles franchise doesn't come close to the colts over the past 10 years.  Chris Polian had to go as he was killing the colts talent (only A. Gonzalez left from 2007 draft, check history to see poor drafts since then).  Bill couldn't stay if Chris was fired.  If Caldwell stays, then either Grigson is stupid or Irsay makes him keep Caldwell.  Either way it would be a sign that things aren't going to go well.

Do not hire Mornhinweg.  Do not hire Mornhigweg.  He may be a fine OC, he is not a head coach.  Also, in OT, do not take the wind.

Looks like Seeder and Phillypower are engaged in a lovely little circle-jerk here.

However, I don't see the Colts returning to "a state of nothingness" without Peyton Manning.  Cause they're going to have Andrew Luck under center.  A state of nothingness seems to be where Michael Vick is taking the Eagles.  Along with the rest of their over-priced, over-hyped 'dream-team'.

PHILLPOWER, ur so right on, as a colts fan yes polian deserved the door. orlavsky is winning no mvp's but he showed how a little pocket presence goes a long way. also you must remember painter got all the practice reps, so orslavsky only started gettin meaningful snaps when he became the starter. its been common knowlege after the jet debackle in 09 that painter stunk. yet polian stuck with him. the gave away 4 mill to collins who may ave been worse. so celavie polian..hello grigson. considering the eagles try to spread the money around and not overpay a franchise guy they have been very successful. i know you only say mccoy, jackson and macklin as prize picks. but they are 3 nice prizes...i hope jackson stays to, dont be another c johnson...good luck eagles

Your welcome....no worries, I HATE the Redskins!  I wont even let the color red into my house!  Too bad they have a stand up coach in Shanahan, but with Snyder there....I have no worries!
