Troy Polamalu wins appeal on $10K cell phone fine

By Will Brinson

Way back in October, Steelers safety Troy Polamalu was fined $10,000 for talking on his cell phone during a game. Polamalu was on the phone with his wife, telling her was OK health-wise, which is why Steelers coach Mike Tomlin believed the safety shouldn't be fined.

The NFL didn't care, and fined Polamalu anyway. But happy news today as Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network reports that Polamalu won his appeal of the fine and was notified of his win by the league on Thursday.

According to league rules, usage of electronic equipment on the sideline (or, in the bench area, if you prefer) is illegal up to 90 minutes before games until the end of game. (It's why players can't tweet during games either.)

Obviously Polamalu's communication with his wife was a matter of alerting her that he was physically safe so the league is providing an exception to the rule here. There's some argument that allowing such an exception could create an easy excuse for players who want to use electronics on the sideline.

A few problems with that logic: there has to be some concern for the health of an individual who wants to use electronics for that excuse to apply. Polamalu was fined anyway, so the player in question would likely need proof that an emergency contact/immediate family member was called/texted/tweeted. And finally, the advantage of using a cell phone on the sidelines is pretty minimal.

All that being said, the league would be smart to bring something like this before the competition committee in the offseason and determine a way that a team with an injured player can provide an alert to family members who aren't at the game and might be concerned with the health of the player in question.

@bmoreduffy, ask Ed Reed about Hines Ward.  Or McGahee about Ryan Clark?  Why don't you win a Super Bowl before you start running off your Steeler hate.  We've played in 3 and won 2 since your last trip.

So now Hines Ward will be on the phone to his mom letting her know that Ray Lewis, Jarrett Johnson and Suggs havent rendered him almost lifeless at every Raven game?

This is easy:  No cell phone use on the field just as the rule states.  However, each team should have a bank of emergency contact info (which they probably have already) and appoint someone to call in case of injury.  Families could also have a number to call--to someone in the booth in case they are worried.

I am happy that Polomalu got a reprieve this time because, it is very natural that he would want to let his wife she need not worry and because it would be inhumane to fine him so heavily considering the circumstances.

I also agree that the league will need to clarify the rule now that an exception was made.

Thanks for reading and...

GO DOLPHINS!!!

bronson90210 had a very good comment but it was removed. Not that it was an unclean version, but perhaps this will do: top rate NFL news-Tebow used the restroom this morning.
I've been using this site for years and have had to resort to self-censorship to get half my comments by, but apparently even that isn't good enough now. The very conceptualization of the color of Tim Tebow's bowel movements is now offensive beyond acknowledgement. Anyone who may have been offended by an analogy between Tebow's guano and the validity of a BS report on Troy Polamalu is an idiot and anyone who would agree with having it removed is both an idiot and a coward.

A cell phone ref? Nah, that would cost way more money than to actually have like a general "team" phone on hand, whereas one of the staff members of the football team would be responsible for it. I say if the player is still on the sidelines, then his health should be ok. If he has to go back in the locker room or be driven off on a cart, then there is some concern ... whereas THEN, you should be able to use a team phone IN THE LOCKER ROOM AREA! Not on the field. I do not recall too may players whose health is in jeopardy like that and is still hanging on the sidelines ... they are taken to the locker room area.

Simple Solution.  If the NFL is concerned about some form of cheating via a cell phone, just add a "cell phone" ref to the officiating crew.  If a player has a personal emergency on the sidelines the "ref" can make, or monitor the call for him. As often as these guys get hurt it might not be a bad idea, especially if their children are at the game.

A Steeler fan in this comment section is remarking to a Lions fan about a CRUSHing loss in the first round...Really, most of us knew the Lions were one and done but I do believe your Steelers had the far worse loss and will be watching the  games on TV like the rest of us from here on out.
