Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

As CBSSports.com’s Mike Freeman pointed out in the immediate aftermath of the Patriots destruction of the Broncos on Saturday, the fact that Tom Brady punted late in New England’s 45-10 win seemed somewhat disrespectful.

Even though it was cool to see Brady take the shotgun snap and then use the short punt in such an old-school manner – plus, the punt went 48 yards and was downed at the 10-yard line! – was Patriots coach Bill Belichick trying to insult Denver with the maneuver (especially since the punt incited a short brawl between the squads)?

Pats dominate Denver
Not exactly, Belichick said in his postgame presser.

As ESPN Boston writes, “Belichick explained the team didn't want to face the various punt rushes the Broncos had on fourth down, so the call was for the unusual quick kick.”

Brady said the team has been practicing the play for seven (!) years and the hope was to land the ball inside the 5-yard line, especially since the surprised Broncos defense didn’t have anybody back to receive the punt.

The only other time Brady punted occurred in 2003 when his punt was actually downed at the opponent’s 1-yard line. That was nine yards better than Saturday’s attempt. So, basically Brady is regressing as a punter.

“I’m disappointed we lost that field position,” Belichick joked. “It’s funny, I mean that’s the kind of play we work on forever and you never know when it’s going to come up.”

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

Didn't CBS show a replay of one of the Denver defensive players giving Brady a respectful chest tap after the play? If one of the Denver defensive players could see the point in it and give Brady his props, it must have been a good play.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

It was a great football play that served it's purpose.  Plain and simple.  As much as I can't stand the Patriots I do respect them as a team knowing full well my dislike is envy driven.  That being said I can't stop the dislike!!!  I can only hope the Bills someday regain the form the early 90s and make football fun again.  Good luck next week.

UNF said it best.  Glad the Tebow hype will quiet down.  I would say Von Miller taking a cheap shot into the lineman's back after the punt was downed was more disrespectful than the punt.  In hindsight, I wish they would have drove down the field and dropped another 7 on 'em.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

What was disrespectful was the Broncos faking injuries all night in an attempt to slow down the Patriots offense.

No disrespect at all, Patriots haters should stop with this bullshit.

Disrespectful was Broncos performance, they've got all the entire week to get well prepared and they were not even close to offer some danger to Patriots yesterday.

By the way, after that 49ers x Saints game, this game was like a Patriots training camp.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

I'd say the entire game boils down to the fact that the Broncos have hit a wall w/Tebow's potential, & this Tebowmania garbage stepped on it's bleep!  Then the Patriots put their foot on it and mashed it into the ground!!!

Disrespectful? No, nto at all ...scoring another TD ...and you would have been complaining even more. However ...they said it was a play they worked 7 years on ...that just makes it completely dumb, stupid, retarded to use it in a game you are up 45-10. You use that play when you have a close lead and want to gain a field advantage ...

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

Pretty darn cool.  I am a fan of the unconventional. I love it when coaches change it up a bit.  I dont think any punt is disrespectful, on the contrary, a punt is giving up a down to push the other team further from the goal. Disrespect would have been to continue to run up the score on Denver's woeful defense.

It's the opposite of disrespectful. If it was the Saints, they'd have kept throwing and Brees would have gotten the record. The Pats pretty much went out of their way not to break the record against the Broncos, does anybody really think the Pats offense just suddenly stopped being effective in the 4th quarter? Does anybody really think if the Pats wanted to pass the ball on 3rd down they wouldn't have completed it and kept the drive going?

The Pats usually keep scoring but even they saw how pointless it was and didn't attempt to run up the score. The same people complaining now would complain if the Pats just continued to play offense. I don't know the stats for 3rd down, but late in the game it was 2 for 4 on 3rd down. That means usually it didn't even get to 3rd down, that's how effective the Pats offense was.
