Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

As CBSSports.com’s Mike Freeman pointed out in the immediate aftermath of the Patriots destruction of the Broncos on Saturday, the fact that Tom Brady punted late in New England’s 45-10 win seemed somewhat disrespectful.

Even though it was cool to see Brady take the shotgun snap and then use the short punt in such an old-school manner – plus, the punt went 48 yards and was downed at the 10-yard line! – was Patriots coach Bill Belichick trying to insult Denver with the maneuver (especially since the punt incited a short brawl between the squads)?

Pats dominate Denver
Not exactly, Belichick said in his postgame presser.

As ESPN Boston writes, “Belichick explained the team didn't want to face the various punt rushes the Broncos had on fourth down, so the call was for the unusual quick kick.”

Brady said the team has been practicing the play for seven (!) years and the hope was to land the ball inside the 5-yard line, especially since the surprised Broncos defense didn’t have anybody back to receive the punt.

The only other time Brady punted occurred in 2003 when his punt was actually downed at the opponent’s 1-yard line. That was nine yards better than Saturday’s attempt. So, basically Brady is regressing as a punter.

“I’m disappointed we lost that field position,” Belichick joked. “It’s funny, I mean that’s the kind of play we work on forever and you never know when it’s going to come up.”

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

I'd say the term "disrespectful" is offered by a sophomoric scribe who thinks these men are high school players. They know the deal. They get paid to play football and take their lumps, get their hits ...

My advice to this pointless scribe is: Get over it. These are grown men.

My other advice is to try to become a real sportswriter and stop using the phrase "Even though it was cool ..."

Maturity ... show some.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

The PATS have not ALWAYS been front runners. In fact, this is the first playoff game they won since the '07 AFC Championship game. We know how Belichek works, this was definitely planned to upset Denver, and it works. We also know that Belichek has been caught cheating before. So, they people that say he is smart, that can't be true because he was caught!!! This was disrepectful just as his prior cheating was. Hope this costs him in the end.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

Not realy a waste of an article as you don't see a team punt on third down very often. On the other point the fight is not the issue as you see them often after a cheap shot and mostly when it goes into one teams bench area. I think the writer was just looking for opinion on the play more than he was reporting or defending it.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

I knew it.... as soon as Brady punted instead og scoring more points. The IDIOT media loves to create controversy. Especially if it involves the Patriots. If he threw another TD, the cry babies would screa "The Patriots are running up the score". The fact of the matter is, Tom Brady could have scored 60 points last night if he wanted to. CBS Sports is turning into another ESPNTEBOW

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

The Pats are great front runners, always have been. Denver made them look like the best team in NFL history last night with their garbage performance. The Brady kick shouldn't have happened, no need for it strategically in spite of what coach B has said. Denver needed to worry more about why they sucked on both sides of the ball, rather than getting angry over that play though..............

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

Not disrespectful at all. At that point in the game with long yardsge for the first down the Patriots knew there would be heavy preasure on Brady and gave up a down in exchange for field position. WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN DISRESPECTFUL WOULD HAVE BEEN LETTING BRADY PASS FOR A RECORD TOUCHDOWN INSTEAD OF KICKING THAT FIELDGOAL LATE IN THE GAME. It was a football play and Denver was a bit overwelmed and emotions took over.

Brady's Punt:  Waste of an article.  Fight started due to cheap shot.  Not punt.

Disrespectful?  It's called running your offense.  They only thing disrespectful about last night's game is allowing a guy to pretend to be a NFL quarterback when the entire country knows he can't play the position.  That's disrespectful to professional football.  And having the tebow network (CBS) continue to serve as his professional cheerleader while shoving it down the throats of real fans just makes it worse.  And now this worthless network is trying to make a big deal out of a punt?  How pathetic, CBS?

Disrespectful???
Handing over the ball over (quick kick) to the opposing team on 3rd down???
If they tried a pass, would that have been disrespectful also?

If the norm is if you have a big lead, and then are expected to run 3 times into the middle of the line for 3 plays and then punt, then why bother finishing the game?

If the opposing team doesn't like it, they should just concede the game and walk off the field.

Disrespectful?

I don't even understand the argument.

Disrespectful would have been if Brady had fired another pass to Gronkowski.

Disrespectful would have been if they had driven for another score.

They were just finishing the game.

I don't see the problem at all.
