Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

As CBSSports.com’s Mike Freeman pointed out in the immediate aftermath of the Patriots destruction of the Broncos on Saturday, the fact that Tom Brady punted late in New England’s 45-10 win seemed somewhat disrespectful.

Even though it was cool to see Brady take the shotgun snap and then use the short punt in such an old-school manner – plus, the punt went 48 yards and was downed at the 10-yard line! – was Patriots coach Bill Belichick trying to insult Denver with the maneuver (especially since the punt incited a short brawl between the squads)?

Pats dominate Denver
Not exactly, Belichick said in his postgame presser.

As ESPN Boston writes, “Belichick explained the team didn't want to face the various punt rushes the Broncos had on fourth down, so the call was for the unusual quick kick.”

Brady said the team has been practicing the play for seven (!) years and the hope was to land the ball inside the 5-yard line, especially since the surprised Broncos defense didn’t have anybody back to receive the punt.

The only other time Brady punted occurred in 2003 when his punt was actually downed at the opponent’s 1-yard line. That was nine yards better than Saturday’s attempt. So, basically Brady is regressing as a punter.

“I’m disappointed we lost that field position,” Belichick joked. “It’s funny, I mean that’s the kind of play we work on forever and you never know when it’s going to come up.”

If you are offended by this play or are an avid fan of "they ran up the score on my team" then you are simply a p*ssy and professional sports is not for you. Join a YMCA league or go watch YMCA games...everyone gets a trophy there and feels good.

Not disrespectful.  We won't attempt to score again, but we're not going to make it easy on you to score again.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

I doubt the fight had anything to do with Brady punting. Looked more like a Broncos player taking a cheap shot at a Patriots player. Who knows what those two had done or said to each other on that play or any of the others before it. Denver's defense should've recognized when Brady dropped back into a near regular 4th down punt formation. They can call timeout just the same. A 3rd down quick kick, was unexpected, but the Broncos did little to stop the play from being snapped by the Patriots center.

Hey datboyeddiep -- since you  said it, when ewxactly WAS the last time an NFL team used THIS type of kick?  Just curious -- you really don't know, do you?  Now you can look it up and tell us all.  Some writer probably mentioned it today.  Bottom line is the play made no difference, but if the Pats "didn't want to score" or didn't want to injure their starters -- they do what other teams in the NFL do every week.  They take out their starters and play back-ups.  Don't like that?  Then run the ball more and eat up the closk.  See? there are alternatives that teams actually use.  It's not either a pass TD or take a knee, is it?  Bellichek said he was worried about punt coverage formations??  Truth is -- Bellichek always tries to be cute and embarrass his opponents whenever possible.

It is on a kick-off return, but once the ball stops moving on a punt it is considered down. Now, if the ball is still rolling around on the ground a Denver player wants to try and pick it up between 3 Pats he can do so (but that wouldnt be very smart).

thats Football folks!!  catch the other team off guard.  Its like an end around or a fake FG.  An onsides kick or a fake punt.  That is what you do.  Fake theother team out.  Out think them out coach them and out play them.  that is what the patriots were supposed to do and that is what they did in Foxboro yesterday.  I am a Pats fan and season ticket holder. WAY TO GO PATRIOTS!!! KEEP WINNING BABY!!!!

No.  It was a nice,"here, we won't score on you again, but we don't want to risk offensive injuries move."  I hate the Patriots, but they could have scored another touchdown.  The punt was a nice way of securing field position.
