Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

By Josh Katzowitz

As CBSSports.com’s Mike Freeman pointed out in the immediate aftermath of the Patriots destruction of the Broncos on Saturday, the fact that Tom Brady punted late in New England’s 45-10 win seemed somewhat disrespectful.

Even though it was cool to see Brady take the shotgun snap and then use the short punt in such an old-school manner – plus, the punt went 48 yards and was downed at the 10-yard line! – was Patriots coach Bill Belichick trying to insult Denver with the maneuver (especially since the punt incited a short brawl between the squads)?

Pats dominate Denver
Not exactly, Belichick said in his postgame presser.

As ESPN Boston writes, “Belichick explained the team didn't want to face the various punt rushes the Broncos had on fourth down, so the call was for the unusual quick kick.”

Brady said the team has been practicing the play for seven (!) years and the hope was to land the ball inside the 5-yard line, especially since the surprised Broncos defense didn’t have anybody back to receive the punt.

The only other time Brady punted occurred in 2003 when his punt was actually downed at the opponent’s 1-yard line. That was nine yards better than Saturday’s attempt. So, basically Brady is regressing as a punter.

“I’m disappointed we lost that field position,” Belichick joked. “It’s funny, I mean that’s the kind of play we work on forever and you never know when it’s going to come up.”

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

Rikki finally talks some sense.

The Patriots can't win for losing with the hater fans out there.  They dismantled the Broncos, yet this wasn't the worst whipping DENVER has ever taken in a playoff game (that'd be SF dropping 55 on them in the SB).  If Brady had thrown the ball, you'd complain about running up the score.  There was no point in calling a run play, because it was 3rd and 10 and Denver was stacked up on the line, ready to run blitz - which is why Brady called the timeout prior to the quick kick.

GET OVER IT KIDS.  It's FOOTBALL.  Sometimes your favorite team gets its booty kicked all over the field, and all you can do is snivel in your beer and beg the bartender to change the channel so you don't have to watch it anymore.  We Pats fans have been there more than a few times ('86 Super Bowl comes immediately to mind), so it ain't like you're the only ones.

The quick kick prevented a lot of potential injuries, and would have sped up the rest of the game had it not been for Von Miller's stupidity.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

Not a fan of either team..with that said, I'm all for the play. why throw and get a first down w/ the possibility of scoring or run the ball and give it to them there?? I say SMART play, make them go the distance. who cares??? game was over after they were up 28 anyway...broncos were DONE!!!

I'm not sure, but I don't think the whistle had blown yet.   That would mean Von Miller was legally blocking a player as a member of the receiving team of a ridiculous punt.

Pats were by far the better team, on both sides of the ball, and played an amazing game.  A stupid trick punt (seriously?) was totally unnecessary.

What's wrong with Brady punting? You guys must not watch football often. It happens more often than not. You do it to catch the D by suprise and put the other team in bad field position. I have no clue how this is disrespectful. Get over it....

No issue with the play at all. Would everyone rather the Pats score again? Of course not. These type of kicks are utilized more ofvten than the writer of this article makes it seem. This was basically the Pats taking a knee, it's better to do this than run up the score.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

Come on... you are winning 45-10 with one of the greatest passing QB's of all time..... They could've just put in 2nd or 3rd string... punt on 3rd down... STRAIGHT DISRESPECTFUL!!!! Even more disrespectful is that they have Tom Brady punt... Teams are forgetting what SPORTMANSHIP is.... from Brees running up scores, to Brady punting....

You don't hate Tebow. You hate for what he stands for. Something that a person like you will never understand.

Field position?  That's really the argument you're going to use for this?  It was 45-10, with 3 minutes left.  How does field position factor into it?  If they had thrown or run for another first down, they could have run out the clock.  Instead they use a playoff game as a platform for a stupid stunt.

Why not write an article on the horrible play calling by the Broncos?  Run, run, pass.  Rinse, repeat.  Awful job by McCoy.

I am not a fan of the Patriots either and I don't see the problem with the quick kick. Had they thrown into the end zone, it might have raised some eyebrows. This was purely the fault of a frustrated Von Miller. Hopefully, he will get a big fat fine and maybe a suspension.
The good news is that some charities will make some money!
