Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

As’s Mike Freeman pointed out in the immediate aftermath of the Patriots destruction of the Broncos on Saturday, the fact that Tom Brady punted late in New England’s 45-10 win seemed somewhat disrespectful.

Even though it was cool to see Brady take the shotgun snap and then use the short punt in such an old-school manner – plus, the punt went 48 yards and was downed at the 10-yard line! – was Patriots coach Bill Belichick trying to insult Denver with the maneuver (especially since the punt incited a short brawl between the squads)?

Pats dominate Denver
Not exactly, Belichick said in his postgame presser.

As ESPN Boston writes, “Belichick explained the team didn't want to face the various punt rushes the Broncos had on fourth down, so the call was for the unusual quick kick.”

Brady said the team has been practicing the play for seven (!) years and the hope was to land the ball inside the 5-yard line, especially since the surprised Broncos defense didn’t have anybody back to receive the punt.

The only other time Brady punted occurred in 2003 when his punt was actually downed at the opponent’s 1-yard line. That was nine yards better than Saturday’s attempt. So, basically Brady is regressing as a punter.

“I’m disappointed we lost that field position,” Belichick joked. “It’s funny, I mean that’s the kind of play we work on forever and you never know when it’s going to come up.”

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

One thing I noticed was that, after the kick there were a number of Patriots standing around the ball. They vacated the area after the altercation started, but NONE of them touched the ball. WHy wasn't there a Bronco payng attention, pick up the ball and run for what would have probably been a TD??

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

The Patriots are kind of classless fartheads on a lot of fronts, but I actually have no problem with this play. What would have been rubbing it in is Brady throwing 15 yards for another first down. This was safe, maximized the field position advantage for your defense. I think the fight probably wasn't even related to the call.

The other time I think this play should be used in this situation more often is when an offense is pinned on the goal, facing third down and long. If you've got a QB that can quickly get a punt off past the defense and get to at least mid-field, then you've helped your defense out some at the expense of your offense attempt one last, low-percentage play for a first down.

This kind of play is actually pretty common in high school and sub-varsity ball. It's all about protecting field position.

They lost, so to a degree oyu are right, but many (JIm Brown laughed about Denver beating Pit) thought the same thing the week before. It is very easy to make definitive statements after the game.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

For Denver's sake, they should have been happy that Brady did what he did or else they would have put 50-plus on them and then all that would be hearing along with the thrashing of the Broncos was that the Patriots was trying to run-up the score! I tend to look at it as the Patriots implementing "the mercy rule ala the Patriots' way".

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

Negator,  Yes, CBS did show the respectful tummy tap.  Bellichik was just trying to reduce the chances of suffering an injury long after the game had been decided.  It was a smart play.  Glad to see Waters ride Miller over the Pats bench so the team could express their appreciation for the only hit he made all game.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

Bottom line is denver didn't belong in the playoffs, but they were there due to a bad division.  Anybody who thought they had a remote chance of winning that game is in serious denial.  I like Tebow for what he stands for, I'm tired of the hype, but the fact is he IS NOT A GOOD QB.  All his plays are right out of college and it shows how bad a coach John Fox really is.  Fox should have someone that can run his offense, not the other way around.  As for this punt thing, it's football, grow up.  If you don't like em running all over then stop them or STFU.  Just in case nobody has noticed, the Patriots play to the end of the game regardless of the it should be.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

As a stalwart and unshakable Broncos fan, I have to say that the play was a good one.  I served its purpose (avoiding a more dangerous 4th down punt at the cost of trying for another first down) and gave Denver the ball... which we needed to try to save some face at that point.

What was terrible about the play was Von Miller's cheap shot that incited the brawl; I hope he really gets it in the locker room for that.  It's not the kind of thing I like to see from my team.

All that said, NE gave us a sound whuppin' for a second time this season, and even so I'm glad we got into the playoffs and won one; it's a huge improvement over last season and was far better than anyone gave us odds on.

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

A great win and a great football play dictated by the situation at hand.  Would it not have been more disrespectful to continue to drive and score on the Denver defence?  I think they were showing good showmanship.  Unlike Von Miller the sore loser.  That is what I saw in this video.  GO PATS!

Brady's punt: disrespectful or pretty darn cool?

What was disrespectful was the Broncos faking injuries all night in an attempt to slow down the Patriots offense.
