Archie Manning: Peyton 'likes his roots in Indy'

With three games remaining in the 2011 NFL season, it's just about time to flip into full "Where will Peyton Manning play in 2012?" mode. (Trust me: from February 8th to March 8th, you'll hear a lot about it.) His father Archie Manning said Sunday that Peyton would prefer to stay with the Colts.

Of course, as long as Eli Manning is playing -- he beat Green Bay at Lambeau on Sunday with Archie watching -- the Manning machine might as well already be started.

"Peyton kind of likes his roots in Indy,” Archie told the New York Post after watching his other son beat the Packers at Lambeau Field. "We’ll see what happens there. If that doesn’t work and he can get healthy we’ll see. That’ll all work out. He’s just trying to get healthy."

Archie was asked specifically about the rumors that the Jets could be interested in Peyton and declined to discuss that.

“I’m not going to get into that," Archie replied.

It shouldn't be surprising that Peyton wants to stay with the Colts. He's due a lot of money, it's the only team he's ever played for, he's comfortable with the organization and the idea of being discarded by the one team he's ever played for so they can draft a rookie with the first pick can't be comforting.

But Peyton has little control over whether or not he stays with the Colts. That boils down to his health, their specific plan to rebuild the roster and myriad other factors that will be fleshed out over the next month or so.

Archie Manning: Peyton 'likes his roots in Indy'

Please, put him with Danielson and get rid of Lundquist, No, get rid of Danielson, and put him with Lundquist, wait, get rid of Danielson and Lundquist and let Peyton and Archie work together. Archie is one very good announcer, listened to him for years.Maybe we could pull Keith Jackson out of retirement....he was the greatest.

Archie Manning: Peyton 'likes his roots in Indy'

There's 28 million reasons why Peyton Manning will not be a Colt in 2012. He's due a hefty $28 bonus if he's a part of the roster come March. With the Colt's roster in dire need of an upgrade, how can the Colts organization logically decide to keep Manning while drafting Andrew Luck with the first pick in April's 2012 NFL draft?

Keeping Manning on the books plus the added cost of Andrew Luck's contract and bonus will tap more than 40% of the total cap available to the Colts. It would not be cost effective. Plus, you have to sign your own free agents and round out the roster in the draft and free agency to become competitive once again. Tying up 40% of your cap space for one position is asinine. The only sensible course of action would be for the Colts cutting Peyton Manning before he's due his huge roster bonus and starting a new era with Andrew Luck as the starting quarterback.

Archie Manning: Peyton 'likes his roots in Indy'

I doubt seriously that Archie just walked up to the mike to offer an opinion. The guy should be in the HOF on his DNA alone. Okay, seriously, Archie Manning will always get a pass in my book, I wish Payton would just go on and hire him as his agent. Archie Manning is still the most respected foe in the history of LSU football. Any CD you try to buy with the LSU fight song, or any other game day music, will have "Archie Who" on it. Really, a song about an Ole Miss quarterback on an LSU CD.  I still remember some of the epic games, duels between him and Bert Jones. I remember his years with the Saints. Running for his life most of the time. If the team won, he always gave credit to his teammates. If the team lost, he took all the blame. Archie, was, and still is a class act, and so are his sons.

archie pulls all the strings and will decide where peyton plays next year. just like he decided where eli plays today. archie is just "setting the table" for the off-season. who's gonna be the highest bidder? when archie says "peyton has roots" he means his 10% of peyton's contract. so $28MIL if the colts pay out peyton can buy some "deep roots." hell, eli is better than peyton anyways at least in the playoffs.

Great thought (Manning staying in Indy to help Luck develop) but how can the owner afford to pay him 20 mill/yr (or more) for coaching tips?  Manning would have to take a huge pay cut.  Plus I seriously doubt if Manning thinks he can play that he'd be willing to sit behind a rookie.  Frankly it'd be disrespectful to Manning.  So unless he retires and is hired as a coach I don't see the happening.

Indy's owner is in a tough sitution, damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.  What if he lets Manning go and then the Colts suck (continue to suck) and Manning wins another SB or two?  What if Manning's replacement is a bust?  What if he keeps Manning and his huge contract, can't sign other players because of it then Manning is hurt the first play of the season, out forever?  Basically take the route of lesser evil, cut Manning loose (ideally through a trade) and start over.  Manning won't play forever and likely forever comes sooner if Indy continues to suck and allows Manning to get killed.

Archie Manning: Peyton 'likes his roots in Indy'

I agree with so many of these posts: Why does Archie Manning think we need his input on anything Peyton or Eli? Seriously

Couldn't agree more. When did Archie decide that we needed to hear everything he thinks about Peyton's situation?
