SimpsonBy Josh Katzowitz

Less than a month ago, Bengals receiver Jerome Simpson was the toast of the NFL after his flip heard ‘round the world was recognized as one of the greatest plays of the season.*

Now, Simpson has to face the fact he might not be playing football again in the near future.

As the Cincinnati Enquirer reports, Simpson was indicted Thursday on charges that hewas trafficking marijuana over eight ounces and less than five pounds. The charge, the newspaper writes, is a Class D felony that could lead to a punishment of one to five years in prison.

Simpson, you’ll recall, was detained and questioned by Kenton County, Ky,. police after Simpson’s girlfriend signed for a package at his home that contained a 2.5 pound bag of high-grade marijuana from California.

Authorities said it was “a controlled delivery to a house that was set up as a distribution network,” and inside the home, police allegedly found six more pounds of pot, scales and packaging material.

Bengals offensive tackle Anthony Collins also was at Simpson’s home at the time, but he wasn’t indicted.

“Unfortunately I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Collins said at the time. “However, I do want to take this opportunity to let my fans, friends and family know that I had no part in the reported activities at Jerome’s home. I have done nothing wrong and I have not been charged with doing anything wrong. So far as I know, I am no longer a part of any investigation.”

Unfortunately for Simpson, he can’t say the same thing.

*Of course, it made for an easy “OMG, look how high he got on that play.”

Jerome Simpson indicted on drug charge

Why?  Why would he or Hurd do something like this (if it is true)?  The guy has a cake job, one that pays him a lot of money and all he has to do is play a game he is good at.  Same with Hurd (great special teamer, could have had a career job in that role).  So why risk it?

Jerome Simpson indicted on drug charge

I assume Jerome Simpson doesn't know who Sam Hurd is. When are the players going to get it?  They are targets, they are being looked at heavily due to the amounts of money they make and the lifestyle they lead

Jerome Simpson indicted on drug charge

Well, one thing is consistent.  He lives in the right city and plays for the right team, Marvin's Felons.  One prediction, if I may.  We will eventually hear about "wrong place-wrong time" Anthony Collins in the context of the police blotter.  It may not be related to this particular situation, but it all but an ironclad certainty that he will be one of the next Bengals to run afoul of the law.  You're a Bengal + you find yourself in the apartment of another teammate who distributes pot = hire a good lawyer now, because Kharma is going to follow you flies on poo poo.

Seriously, when is this country going to stop putting the spotlight on these poor, innocent football players? He was clearly framed, he cant help if curriers drop off packages!! He probably thought it was just a hat from ebay, I mean come on who signs for 2.5lbs of weed? The DEA clearly set him up!

Jerome Simpson indicted on drug charge

I was watching ESPN's top plays Wednesday and it did not show that guy hit the 3 pointer from full court to win a game at the buzzer. I think they wanted Simpsons top play to remain #1. I have a feeling that shot will surface soon so they can wash their hands of him
