Spags will join Payton in New Orleans for 2012. (US Presswire)

By Ryan Wilson

Earlier this week, Gregg Williams, the Saints' defensive coordinator for the previous three seasons, took the same job in St. Louis to work for his old boss in Tennesse, newly named Rams head coach Jeff Fisher in St. Louis. There had been speculation before New Orleans' season ended in San Francisco last Saturday that Williams might choose to follow Fisher so it wasn't surprising when it eventually happened.

Williams was reportedly torn about leaving the Saints but the defense, which struggled against the run in 2011, could be better in 2012: CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Larry Holder confirms through a league source that New Orleans has hired Steve Spagnuolo who, up until two and a half weeks ago, was the Rams head coach. He landed that gig after serving capably as the Giants' defensive coordinator in 2007-2008, which includes shutting down the 2007 Patriots, one of the most high-powered offenses in NFL history, in Super Bowl XLII.  He was fired from St. Louis after sandwiching a 7-9 season around one- and two-win seasons.

Now he'll join Sean Payton's staff. And unlike St. Louis, where injuries and lack of talent meant that the Rams had to hold opponents to fewer than 10 points to have a chance to win, Spags will lead a defense whose best weapon isn't named Vilma or Smith or Ellis, but some guy named Drew Brees. And he's good for at least 35 points every time he steps on the field.

Guys, you know there is no talking to an eagles fan. They are the angriest bunch around. They know they're never gonna win so they just wanna spread misery. As a Giants fan I know this first hand. Great signing by Saints. I wanted Spags back in New York but this latest run has derailed that, not that im unhappy about that. Im just glad eagles didn't get a great DC.

Schwegmann's bags?  You must be a turn-coat Saints fan because nobody knows that name except a local.  You're new city is low-class because you're living in it.  Put a bag over your head, we're proud of our city and our Saints.  There are no empty trophy cases in New orleans butt-wipe!

As an Eagles fan, this news is very bad to me.  Ya-sure the Saints got better.  Well they didn't need Spags as badly as Philadelphia did.  Castillo showed some good stuff late.  But the damage was done completely, in the first half of the season.  Were the Bears and Falcons really that much better?  Well ATL got a playoff game, so maybe they were.  What about the Bills or Cardinals?  Philly paid the price for their new move, and now will pay the price for their lethargy.  I was unaware of animosity between Spags and Washburn.  But that could tip things.  Spags isn't ready yet for HC.  Josh McDaniels probably wasn't (or maybe he was?),  Mike Martz didn't get called.  Greg Williams might be ready.  This move to the Rams strikes me as desperate.  Why?  ---- I'd love to see Brad Childress back in PHL too.  Is that one too late too?

Spags' team was one of two that actually gave Saints pause in the season.  Take his knowledge of the conferance, his old team and how it beat us and build a fortress around it.  Williams will do good/bad with Fisher, but I didn't like his inflexible/riverboat gambling ways anyway.  Stability is more important.  Keep your enemies close, not a bad hire; now do something about it and bring us to the promised land again, we can handle it.

The Saints got the better end of this coaching carousel, a gift from the Rams for costing the Saints home playoff games this postseason! Spags is not a HC yet...however his DC abilities will probably secure a couple home playoff games for the Saints next season. D.Brees w/an aggressive defense on his side?? glad the Saints aren't in the old NFC west.
