K. Williams fumbled twice in San Francisco's loss to New York (AP).

By Josh Katzowitz

After a man makes a couple major mistakes in a game that helps cost his team a victory, it’s refreshing to know that that many fans, through the power of Twitter, can lend that man some much-needed support.

Take 49ers receiver Kyle Williams, for example. He muffed a punt and then lost a fumble in overtime that led to the Giants winning the NFC title and advancing to the Super Bowl. His teammates and many of San Francisco’s fans rallied around the crestfallen Williams, sending him messages of encouragement and love.

Championship Weekend Recap

Then, you have the people who, according to the San Jose Mercury News, are tweeting death threats and other heartwarming sentiments to Williams. As one apparent fan wrote, “I hope you, youre (sic) wife, kids and family die, you deserve it.” Wrote another: “Jim Harbaugh, please give @KyleWilliams_10 the game ball. And make sure it explodes when he gets in his car.”

So, that’s nice, huh?

But his 49ers teammates were there to defend him.

"We all lost this game," tight end Delanie Walker said, via’s Gregg Doyel. "We play as a team -- it's 45 of us out there. It's not Kyle's fault, so don't go over there and act like it is. Cause it's not."

Safety Donte Whitner told reporters: “Hopefully, he doesn't beat himself up too hard. Hopefully, the media's not on him too tough. Because he's still a young player, and he still has a bright future in the National Football League.

"There's just certain things that you can't do in certain situations. We have to protect the ball at all times. I think he learns that now, and he'll be better."

For his part, Williams spoke to reporters after the game, saying he was simply trying to make a play.

“Everybody in here has covered my back and kind of patted me on the back and said, 'It's not all on your shoulders,'" Williams said.

Unfortunately, some of San Francisco’s fans didn’t get that memo.

Sending death threats to him is a punk ass move. The guy felt like crap already. Twitter is populated by far too many losers.

They are punks, but it's just crap, that's all it is.  Nobody is going to bother Kyle Williams, they aren't going to hurt him let alone kill him.   He's not the first athlete to get threatened and won't be the last either.  These people are very likely gamblers that lost a lot of money on SF in that game, they were pissed off and got stupid.  I'm not saying it's ok, just pointing out why it likely happened.

The idiots should get charged with uttering death threats, the problem with the internet is it's almost impossible to prove anybody "guilty beyond a reasonable doubt" when it comes to things like this.  I don't care if they track his i.p and connect it to a physical address that matches the twitter account holder's information, it still wouldn't be enough.  They still have to prove that person typed those threats onto twitter... very tough to do.  Sounds easy, but in reality it's not easy at all to prove.  Not to mention with all the ipods and ipads and tablets and unsecured wireless connections out there it's near impossible to find anybody anymore.

Fa sho cujay....any1 whos played football at a moderately competetive level understands these are just the breaks sometimes.  And as far as social media sites go, well, I'm on here so I cant bash it, but for people spendin a majority of their free time on twitter criticizing top notch athletes, well clearly they are losers.  Those that can... do, those that cant ...teach and those that have the most advice are the ones that need it the most!! Them dudes need to get a life...!!

I guess you had to expect some kind of backlash from the miscues in that game.  Unfortunately theres a few people that take it wayyyyy too far. What happened to this kid is the equivalent of the average person getting a DUI.  Noone is more pissed than you for screwing up and you can be damn sure you are gonna catch grief from every1 around you.  So best case scenario you deal with the consequences of a MISTAKE and learn from it!! How ridiculous of a person would you have to be that you would berrade some1 on a public forum, not to mention, subject yourself to potential arrest for making threats.  So Stupid.  Even if your a bettor, are you gonna hold a player accountable for your misfortune.  Believe me, as some1 whos made the occasional wager I have cursed at players thru the tv many a time but thats where it ends!!  Turnovers hurt sure, but when it comes right down to it the 9ers played kinda conservative when they had the lead and went into panic mode when they were down and I think Williams just got caught up in it.  He actually had a couple good returns in the game and I thought he looked unbelievably fast and quick on his 1st kick return.  This kids gonna be good, all this hype will fade soon and he'll be able to move on.  Of course no1 will ever forget, and his and jacoby jones' errors will be referenced and replayed to death when the next guy does it but I think the guy shows alot of potential.  Anyway, we all knew there gonna be the bitter type of folks out there trashin him but also there'd be enough people in his corner helpin him dust it off.  If the 49ers are for real we'll see em in the playoffs again soon, simple as that!

The first muff was avoidable. He just needed to get out of the way. I thnk on the fumble he was just trying to make a play and the defender made a better one.
