Del Rio to take over as Broncos DC

Del Rio

By Josh Katzowitz

After losing Dennis Allen to the Raiders head coaching job, Broncos coach John Fox is bringing in Jack Del Rio to be the new Denver defensive coordinator, the team announced Friday night.

"We are thrilled to be able to add such a well-respected defensive coach to our staff," Fox said in a statement. "He was an integral part of our turnaround on defense during my first year with the Panthers in 2002. His defenses with the Jaguars have ranked among the NFL's best, and we are excited he's a Bronco."

The move is most certainly not a surprise, as a report emerged on Wednesday that the Broncos seriously were considering Del Rio.

Plus, Del Rio was Fox’s defensive coordinator in Carolina in 2002 when the team finished second in the league in yards allowed and fifth in points (despite a 7-9 finish) that directly led Del Rio to snatching the Jaguars job.

So, from pretty much all angles, the move makes sense for Fox, and assuming Del Rio -- fired before the end of the 2011 season -- wants to find work again, the move makes sense for him as well. Especially since he’ll take over a defense that improved greatly in the second half of last season.

the blow and the jackass.  congratulations denver on making your team the biggest laughing stock in football. even more than cleveland.

im very sorry for the REAL true fans of denver who have had their team ruined.

it now seems as if the whole thing has to have a complete collapse before denver gets their team back

get a REAL qb instead of a fraud wannabee
get a REAL coach where the fans dont run the asylum
get a REAL defensive coordinator instead of a jackass

and get rid of all the bandwagon fans who had no clue who was in a denver uniform past or present before the blow

i really do feel sorry for the REAL fans of denver and not the turd bandwagon fans that have creeped into this fanbase. adding this jackass just made it the complete joke it is

i give this team 2 years before the complete overhaul. BYE BYE ELWAY too.

jack del rio LEFT carolina and then they went to the superbowl. jack del rio is a JACKASS

Now that was a Great move..Big fan of Del Rio when he's able to solely focus in on Defense...Still need a QB but their D should be more formidable.

To all that think Tebow is not the answer go to Bleacher Report and read that Bradys personal quarterback coach said that he could fix Tebows mechanics in two weeks and Elway knows that it will not take much, and to the point of this story Denver has scored big with Del Rio and hopefully they can keep him for a few years.

So Del Rio passed on Tebow in Jax, he eventually winds up coaching on a Tebow-led team as DC rather than HC. AS for tebow not being the solution for the Broncos. I saw a tale of two games in the playoffs. The opener the offensive line blocked and the defense did their job, Tebow got his first win over the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger, then lost to Brady & the Patriots. Tebow gets better protection he can be a solution, when he's been harassed like the Patriots were able to do, he loses like anyone else that would lose to the Patriots.

Thank you kstacey.  You read as if you get it, and you are a BRONCOS fan (typed the well meaning Raiders fan).  Tebow is not the answer.  We agree on Del Rio.  What if the Broncos had WR Blackmon with the second overall?  Tebow would look better with a player like him (ANY QB in the NFL will).  Any QB drafted by the Broncos will whip up a poop storm very quickly.  I say one more season with Tebow and a stud WR that can catch any ball thrown by anyone.
Denver sports fans are knowledgeable and support their football team.  I think his life choices and demographic account for his rock star status.  As an AFC West fan, I hate to type this...  I would gladly have a Phillip Rivers leading my team than a Tebow.  With the right coaching and play calling in SD, Rivers would be elite (hated to type that).  He is not elite yet.
If Tebow continues to run and evolves as a passer, he is still a running QB in the NFL... they do not last long.
Del Rio is a win win.  Proven D.C. and Jax D was always solid.

Del Rio to take over as Broncos DC

This is a solid move for the Broncos. Del Rio has put solid defensive teams most years without big name talent. He teams have always been competetive in a division dominated by Manning and a payroll not even close to the top of the league.
Can everyone please just wait and see with Tebow his first year in the league he had a bafoon for a head coach (why he was drafted 1st rd) and then no off-season. Then he starts has a back-up who get little to no snaps in practice he showed improvement and some regression. That is what young QBs do, he works has hard has anyone so he should show some real development this coming year. He may or may not be the guy to take us to a super bowl, but this year you build the defense that has more holes than anyone wants to admit.  You take the best talent no matter the position is the only other way to go we need major talent upgrades everywhere but O-line.
