Eagles will keep Castillo, hire Bowles

CastillorBy Josh Katzowitz

All along, it’s been pretty obvious that, whether Eagles coach Andy Reid kept his job (and it was always pretty clear he was going to do so), Juan Castillo would be out as defensive coordinator. After all, Philadelphia struggled for much of the season with its wide-nine scheme*, and there were rumblings that in order to keep his job, Reid would have to fire Castillo.

Reid denied it at the time, and it looks like he was telling the truth, because according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Castillo will remain as defensive coordinator.

The team also announced that former Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles -- who was a head coaching candidate for the Raiders after leading Miami to a 2-1 record after the Tony Sparano firing -- will take over as the Eagles secondary coach.

*This is what happens when you hire an offensive line coach to be your defensive coordinator.

Clearly, this wasn't all Castillo's fault. The wide-nine scheme was Reid’s idea -- in fact, there was speculation that Reid hired Castillo for the defensive coordinator job because he couldn’t find a suitable DC who actually felt comfortable running that scheme -- and it took a while for Philadelphia’s personnel to make it work.

Add that with a flurry of offseason acquisitions -- including Jason Babin, Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie -- and you can begin to see that not all the defensive inefficiencies could be blamed on Castillo.

"We've just got to continue to work with it," Reid said in October after the Eagles started 1-4. “Listen, anything new you've got to work with and work out the wrinkles and get it right."

"Players, they have to learn it, coaches have to learn it, particularly the new coaches. So it's a joint effort there."

And actually, the Eagles played better defense than you think. According to Football Outsiders, they were the 12th-most efficient defensive unit in the league, and in yards and points allowed, they were a top-10 squad. In the final four games of the year -- all Philadelphia wins -- the Eagles allowed an average of 11.5 points per game.

So, obviously the defense did improve. Based on that, maybe it’s not surprising Castillo was retained in the first place.

See you all in 2013.
Just to clarify, I really don't care that Reid is staying another year as I'm indifferent either way.  Though the whole thing with Castillo being named the d-coordinator after the defensive line coach was hired was idiotic.  Lastly, running the wide 9 with nothing better than average-at-best talent at linebacker, especially middle linebacker, is really stupid.

Reid is ok, but Castillo not voicing that he needs a better linebacker is ridiculous.  At least Johnson would have demanded a better player for there, and he got it when he did (eventually).

Well the fact that they hired a d-line coach last year before bringing in Castillo just proves the ineptness of Reid at coach. He brings in a d-line coach in Washburn who decides he wants to run the wide nine, well that means your defesive coordinator needs to base his game planning around that. Half assed backwards, the way the Eagles always are.

Eagles will keep Castillo, hire Bowles

This is not a perfect decision but it makes perfect since.
Andy Reid in Andy Reid fashion kept his word and showed some integrity. Not
like the political coaches that say three things and accomplish nothing or have
a complete reversal on their initial statement(s).

Hiring a defensive mined person with head coaching credentials
(limited I’ll admit) providing a fresh assessment of the Eagles is priceless.
If Castillo does not work out then you can promote from within maintaining chemistry/continuity.
The Eagles have the defensive talent pool to match up successfully in the NFL,
but their defensive scheme leaves a little to be desired.

The fire everyone and start from scratch is a concept that
proves more harmful / distracting than good, just view the records of the (consistent)
winning teams their coaching staff and front office work in unison and are
fairly consisted in tenure.

From the outside the Eagles major issues are in keeping your
quarterbacks healthy and turnovers. Your quarterback gained almost 600 yards in
13 games, with some of those games playing hurt. The attention needs to be
spent on the O-line.  It will not matter
if your replace Vick or not as long as your O-line is very porous post season
play will always be a next year project.

Good move by the Eagles? did anyone watch that run defense in 2011? . You will not go to the Super Bowl playing defense like that at all. Thinking that this is a good move explains why the Eagles have 0 Super Bowl wins.

Good move by the Eagles. Winning takes stability, and replacing a coordinator year after year is counter productive. Andy Reid is one of the best coaches in the league, and the Eagles came on strong at the end of the year. The bottom line here, Eagles fans are for the most part, morons. A true bunch of ingrates. We've now seen 9-win and 10-win teams go to the Super Bowl on a frequent basis in this league. During his tenure, Andy and his staff have won 10+ games a year more times than not. In a sum zero sport, that's pretty awesome. Anytime a team wins 10+ games they have a shot at winning the Lombardi trophy. Winning 5-6 games a year gives you no chance. Just ask Browns fans that one. They'd take Andy in a heartbeat. So yeah, fire Andy and clean house. And good luck finding the next Rod Marinelli, who by far are more plentiful than the Belicheks and Coughlins of the world. Philly fans without a doubt are the worst fans in America.
Yeah, those of us who are sick and tired of the same thing over and over again are morons. Because Andy Reid is the ONLY person in the world who is capable of coaching this team. People always want to say 'You'll be sorry when they're gone.' Well they said that about McNabb for years, now 2 seasons after letting him go, the dude isn't even in the NFL! Because we are not satisfied with medicore football, we are the worst fans in America!? Get over yourself.

Eagles made a mistake when they didnt hire Spags and let New Orleand beat them to it. The Eagles couldnt find anyone better to replace Castillo whihc is why they waited this long to announce the fact that they will be retaining him as DC. Reid makes a complete mockery of the media and will continue to as long as he is the Philly coach.

Pathetic that they actually fed us this crap and even more pathetic that some Eagles fans are buying it. Get ride of Reid, his entire coaching staff, get rid of Vick, get rid of these arrogant defesive backs who think they are amazing and don't get paid to make tackles. Enough is enough with this team, I am sick of it year in and year out. Nobody plays with heart, then they beat 4 mediocre teams at the end of the season and we're told 'Nobody would want to face us in the playoffs!?'

REALLY!?
