Irsay says Super Bowl in London is possibility

INDIANAPOLIS -- The members of the Super Bowl committee lately have been content to award hosting duties in cities in the northern part of the U.S. For instance, Indianapolis here and New Jersey in 2014. But what about an international Super Bowl?

Apparently, that’s been something the committee has discussed.

“There’s a little bit of change in philosophy,” Irsay said Monday. “We have the 50-year anniversary coming up, which we’re looking at. There are some members of our committee who have been thinking about having an international Super Bowl in London. That obviously has some real pluses and minuses if you weren’t going to have it on America soil. Right now, we’re in a wait-and-see approach.”

Los Angeles also has drawn some interest from the Super Bowl committee, assuming the Farmer Field project is completed at some point. But London? It seems … well … not very fan-friendly and, probably more importantly, not very corporate-friendly.

It is good news that the committee is willing to get out of the San Diego-Miami-New Orleans rotation every once in a while. Though Dallas, in many ways, had problems, Indianapolis has been a dream so far. Of course, Super Bowl XLVI will be played in a dome, and if the weather drops to 30 degrees and snow begins to fall here, it won’t matter.

The same can’t be said for the New Meadowlands Super Bowl in two years.

“We’re always looking at new stadiums, in warm weather or in a dome,” Irsay said. “We’re obviously going to have a trial weather balloon on that in New York. It could be interesting.”

London could be interesting as well. But that doesn’t mean it’s a great idea.

Give the money hungry powers that be in the NFL , a chance to screw things up & these morons will ! Playing regular season games abroad is moronic to begin with , to even mention moving the Super Bowl out of the United States is criminal ! Europe dosen`t care about this game & never will , it`s OUR GAME leave it where it is ! Where some of the new rules may help the NFL , for the most part has effected the game for example (no kickoff returns is moronic ) also this foolish over-time rule . Stop trying to create the 5th wheel NFL , your changing the game & not for the better . Another example is protecting the QB i understand why , but again you`ve managed to go over board on that as well . Game changing flags thrown every second , same as the WR`s yes we should protect them from illegal hits but yet again way over board . NFL you`ve managed to almost slow this game down to a full stop , with the ammount of whistles & reviews not to mention challenges and the mind numbing commercials . Stop messing with a great thing , before you ruin it !

I'm not for a Super Bowl in London, period! Give them a team or play a couple of regular season games there each year. I hate the idea of playing outdoor cold weather Super Bowls here in the U.S., but playing a Super Bowl in another country is out of the question in my opinion!

The NFL is drooling at the idea of having a real team in London. I believe they will put one there within 10 to 15 years. It is the only real way to grow their product. The only problem is soccer. I doubt the NFL can over take soccer as the king overseas. Who knows? Soon we could have the London Knights, Dubai Terrorists, Somali Pirates, Hiroshima Bombs, French Doors, Filipino Pickpockets, Thai Pimps, German Walls, Amsterdamn Joints, Iranian Nukes, Israeli Commandos, or the Korean DMZs.

Irsay says Super Bowl in London is possibility

I'm tempted to say It is just as daft to hold a Super Bowl in London as the soccer World Cup in the US. To be realistic it is much too soon to hold a Superbowl here, although if it did happen the fans who travelled here would have a fantastic time and be greatly welcomed. However, for Football to be a truely global sport, franchises need to be located here in London, probably Mexico, East Asia, Canada and Germany where I understand football generates a great deal of interest. Surely this can be done by having an International division(s). I have been watching football here for nearly 30 years and love the game (albeit my team has always been and will always be the Browns). British sports fans travel in great numbers and generate an atmosphere that is unique, and if a London Franchise was challenging for the playoffs, you could expect 10,000 to 20,000 fans traveling to an away fixture which would generate money for the hosting City. To summerise, Superbowl in London, not yet, but we are ready for a Franchise and the sooner the better.

I agree the NFL  the Super Bowl and American football is America's game. There are plenty of venues here in the U.S too play the Super Bowl. Example St. Lous, has never held a Super Bowl and have a dome. keep rotating the game every tear thats great as long as you keep it on out home turf the U.S.

said it last night, I'll say it again this morning!  WHO cares what Irsay says!  The Super Bowl should stay in the good old United States of America!

This dude is a drama queen.  A whore for attention.  In the real world....Manning does not need the Colts nor the NFL.  I am very sure that he can do the analyst pre-game show and be the star of it and of all of them by being better than the rest.  He has made his money and he shows that Irsay is a butt puppet who has no regard for other people or the fans that know....Manning is the Colts.

London?  That would be the dumbest thing the NFL could do.  The NFL exists for the American fans, not the fans in London!  If they take the Super Bowl outside the United States it would be a terrible mistake.
