Hills could be back in Cleveland next year. (Getty Images)

2011 wasn't Peyton Hillis' year. But maybe 2012 already got him clear of the Madden Curse, as the Browns reportedly want to re-sign the running back, despite his injuries during the previous season.

That's according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, who reports that Hillis "worked his way back into the team's good graces" over the final six weeks of the season, and that Cleveland would like him back in 2012.

Hillis struggled with injuries, a belief that he was soft, playing time, and all the other things that accompany the Madden Curse in 2011. After busting out for 1,177 yards in 2011, Hillis took a major step back in 2012, rushing for just 587 yards in 10 games, nine of which he started.

At one point, he was the embodiment of Cleveland athletics, a blue-collar guy whose style of running fit perfectly with the way Cleveland sees itself. Which is precisely why the Browns kept saying they'd re-sign him.

That they're now interested in locking up Hillis again is interesting, but perhaps the timing of the interest is obvious, given how much cheaper  Hillis will be to sign than he was a year ago at this time.

Atlanta will gladly take him off your hands Cleveland fans!  We need another power back to compliment Turner!  Rodgers is not built for every down!

I sniff an incentive based contract offer.

Cleveland should keep this guy as he is the style of back that does well against good running defenses (primarily Pitt & Bmore).

@Tribefan - So you call Muslim Mendenhall a crushing back in the nature of a Bus or Jim Brown? WHOA Just sayin...

I recall Mendenhall calling out Ray Lewis prior to a game and when they met in the hole, Ray finished his year off with a vicious hit that broke Mendenhall's shoulder. Funny how that event didn't teach him to keep his talking on the field and out of the media.

Both Cleveland and Pittsburgh have running back legacies, but clearly Cleveland has had the better backs without a doubt.

When I think Pittsburgh I think Bradshaw and the ferocious D as well as the elite WRs in Stallworth & Swan (as far as history).
OK, Franco Harris and a few others backs...Rocky F'in Bleier! (A True patriot!)

For Cleveland it is without a doubt the Running backs as the other poster mentioned. I can't think of a Cleveland WR off hand.
Ozzy Newsome was a stellar TE and even better GM...but it has always been BIG backs in Cleveland.

Signing Hillis would continue this...

They need to sign Hillis and dump that incompetent coach Shurmur. He is a moron and has no idea what he is doing as a head coach. When on the two yard line, he opts to throw it three times instead of pounding it in with either Hillis, or Hardesty when Hillis was out with injury. The focus should not be on if Hillis should be brought back, but if Shurmur should be. The simple answer to that is NO! Get Shurmur out of cleveland immediately!!! Sign Hillis to a 3 year deal for $2.5 million base pay with incentives such as $100,000 for 5 TD's; $50,000 for every 500 yards with other types of bonuses here and there to make the deal potentially worth $4 million a year.

@Tribe_Fan_44001 - By your comment it seems obvious you've only paid attention to football for the last 20 years and heard of nothing before that. In Browns history, they were always known for big, physical running backs. Let's think... Jim Brown, Marion Motley, Leroy Kelly, Greg Pruitt, Mike Pruitt, Kevin Mack, Earnest Byner, Ernie Green, and Ernie Davis if he would have played a down. So yes, let's name them in their long history. I didn't even name one that you stated and the above mentioned were phenomenal backs.

Re: blockice- A three-headed monster rbs in Gore, Hunter and Hillis how could you stop that? LOL

Easy, you tackle the only one thats thats playing that down......why would you pay big money for a RB that'll play 1/3 of the time Undecided

Yes, a cheaper contract and build in incentives. Hope he stays healthy and returns to his Beast mode.

Hopefully Hillis is smart and resigns with the Browns because that is one of the few places in the NFL he can be a feature back.  Cleveland needs to fill holes and by resigning Hillis that takes care of the RB position.  If he stays healthy he could produce solid numbers again for the Browns and possibly sign a big contract in a couple seasons.

The Browns will only offer him a 1 or 2 year deal for maybe 3-4 million a season.  He could have made about 5 mil a year if he took the offer before last season started.

I know the Big Blue have other needs going forward (MLB, SLB, TE. OT, C) and as a fan i should enjoy every minute of the Super Bowl glitter, but landing a real power back like Hillis would certainly be an upgrade over twinkle toes Jacobs.
