2011 wasn't Peyton Hillis' year. But maybe 2012 already got him clear of the Madden Curse, as the Browns reportedly want to re-sign the running back, despite his injuries during the previous season.

That's according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, who reports that Hillis "worked his way back into the team's good graces" over the final six weeks of the season, and that Cleveland would like him back in 2012.

Hillis struggled with injuries, a belief that he was soft, playing time, and all the other things that accompany the Madden Curse in 2011. After busting out for 1,177 yards in 2011, Hillis took a major step back in 2012, rushing for just 587 yards in 10 games, nine of which he started.

At one point, he was the embodiment of Cleveland athletics, a blue-collar guy whose style of running fit perfectly with the way Cleveland sees itself. Which is precisely why the Browns kept saying they'd re-sign him.

That they're now interested in locking up Hillis again is interesting, but perhaps the timing of the interest is obvious, given how much cheaper  Hillis will be to sign than he was a year ago at this time.

Report: Browns now want Peyton Hillis back

I have to admit that I would like to see Hillis re-sign with the Browns.  If he wants feature back money from another team its going to be slim pickins.  Just about every team could use him in a specialist role (for specialist money), but there aren't a ton of teams out there willing to pony up the big bucks to make him their every down guy.  If the Browns didn't sign him I could see him ending up in New England.  Belichick is big on value guys who fit his system.  Apart from his tendency to fumble, Hillis is exactly what Belichick looks for in a back.  Like the other posters said though, its pretty much the Colts, Broncos, and maybe even the Lions.

The Browns wont over pay for hillis. Name one team that is gonna come over the top and overpay for him. It just aint gonna happen tks to Chris johnson and Dangelo williams. I would love to see Hillis back if he comes back ready to play and give 100%. if hes still not happy with management go somewherelse a hole.......Hillis scewed himself last year hes not gettin a huge payday

Peyton Hillis to the Detroit Lions, book it, you heard it here first. The fans in Detroit would love him for the same reasons, blue collar, hard working RB. add Hillis to Stafford and Megatron. watch out.

The Browns have interest again because of the Steelers' interest in creating "The Bus II".

The article states, "... a blue-collar guy whose style of running fit perfectly with the way Cleveland sees itself."

Is this based on their long history (ha!) of this style of running?  Yes, let's name them... Jerome Harrison, Reuben Droughns, William Green,... uh... Eric Metcalf?  I think it's more what they WANT to be (see Pittsburgh).

Report: Browns now want Peyton Hillis back

Hillis doesn't deserve to get paid much after the horrible season he just had and all the minor injuries that kept him out of 6 games.  The Browns will only resign him for the amount they are willing and not for the amount Peyton's agent wants for his client.  I'm sure someone may overpay for Hillis because of his potential and his talent in short yardage situations but if he was smart he would sign a 2 year deal with Cleveland and get the bulk of the carries and try to bring his value back up.

Lots of assumptions here:

  • Hillis will renew contract
  • Cleveland know what they are doing
  • Browns have a plan or anything other than drug induced games of rock-paper-scissors
  • There are no other viable careers on the downside that want exorbitant salaries

What we know as fact though, is a much more impressive scope of work. Failure by ownership. Failure by 'front office'. Failure by coaches. Failure to execute by players. Success in cashing those pay checks every Wednesday.
