Rodgers 'embarrassed' by NFC effort in Pro Bowl

A. Rodgers said he was embarrassed by the NFC's players effort in the Pro Bowl (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

The Pro Bowl, as we all know, is a joke.

We tried making some suggestions last year (um, hello, running clock?!?), and this year, we described why the changes the NFL did make didn’t improve the quality of the game.

Not only do we see this game as an exercise in irrelevance, mostly because the players’ effort is lacking, but apparently so does Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

During his regular appearance on ESPN Milwaukee, Rodgers said  the NFC players “embarrassed themselves” during the game last Sunday. He also said he was "disappointed in the lack of pride.”

Said Rodgers: “I feel like there should be some pride involved in a game like that, and I was just surprised by some of the efforts of some of the guys. This was my second Pro Bowl. (I) played in the one in 2010. It was down in Fort Lauderdale/Miami. I felt that that one had a lot more energy.

“The AFC side obviously had more energy. I think they were upset about the second onside kick (called by Packers coach Mike McCarthy), and at that point they played a lot harder than we did. But even in the early going, they were playing definitely harder than we were.”

Obviously, there’s no reason for the Pro Bowl selections to go all out and risk injury, and the NFL enforces special rules in the game to decrease those chances as well. But when the defensive linemen are basically shaking hands with the offensive linemen each time the ball is snapped and when would-be-tacklers let ball-rushers run right by them for touchdowns, you have to ask yourself, what’s the point of watching this?

And maybe now Rodgers is asking himself, what’s the point of playing?

Rodgers 'embarrassed' by NFC effort in Pro Bowl

Well his 'teamates' did cost him $25k after all, and even when you are on millions $25k is not to be sniffed at!
But seriously folks, I recorded this and sat down to watch it the other night and deleted it after the first quarter! Big Ben threw a pass up the middle to Antonio Gates, who wasn't exactly tackled, more like a little tippity tappety touch and he felt obliged to fall over.
It truly was comical, no farcical, no a joke!

Rodgers should be more embarrassed for losing to the giants!!  It's supposed to be a fun game, not high competition...he got his games backwards!

The NFC should be embarassed, so should the AFC, and the NFL....You're out of order! You're out of order! The whole trial is out of order! They're out of order!.....

It only took a one play to see this was not football. This was like any other All Star game (except MLB). Two in the same day was a little much. NHL, NFL....yuck. I would rather watch the WNBA. At least they're really competing.

I totally understand a player's fear of risking an injury is such a meaningless game but instead of making a mockery of what the game represents just cancel the game and recognize the individual players with an award for their achievement.

Players have been bowing out of the game for one reason or another for years or can't participate because they are in the Super Bowl. Their replacements, sometimes 3 deep, then receive Pro Bowl status by default. Really!?

Here's an idea though, if you want to see a full contact Pro Bowl game, go virtual with it. That is, let EA Sports do their magic. Plug in the Pro Bowl players with their season long stats in a Madden simulation and broadcast the virtual Pro Bowl in high def. Players may get injured but no one really gets hurt. There are enough NFL fans and Madden geeks out there that the game would surely draw at least as large of an audience as a live Pro Bowl. I see lots of techno possibilites for fan participation too.

Wow there are a lot of people that are just unhappy and miserable inside.  A lot of the posters sound like movie critics that miss the fun and action because there is one unbelievable part in the movie.

If you want to you can find fault in anything because nothing material is perfect.

I enjoyed the Pro Bowl.  There were some great catches and some fun trick plays. I did not watch with the intensity that I would if the game mattered but there was some great action.

My goodness people lighten up and enjoy life.

Get rid of the game and have a skills challenge based on position that is open to all players. I'd like to watch rodgers hit a pile-on from the 50 yard line.

I agreed whole heartedly to this. I love to see my team's players selected as All Pros but dread the thought of any guy getting hurt - Football doesn't translate into an All Star type venue - If I wanted to see these guys doing something, I am just as interested in a skills competition and maybe the linemen can have a strongest man competition or something. I would rather see these guys carrying beer barrels full of cement than hitting each other. Give each guy a $25K bonus and send them to Hawaii for a week of relaxation and fun- they deserve it.

Rodgers is correct. There is lack of pride, because there is lack of reason.  I have not watched the Pro Bowl for several years, there simply is no real football being played.  When the numbers drop enough the NFL will come up with a "Reason" to play the game or they will just eleminate it.  The best solution may be that the NFL dumps the Pro Bowl and donates the money the players would have made to a relevant charity.
