Denver GM: Tebow needs to improve on 'everything'

Tim Tebow was the story heading into training camp last summer, he was the story for 20 weeks during the season, and he'll continue to be the story this offseason. On Monday, John Elway, the Broncos executive vice president of football operations, said the team "will be in the market to find more quarterbacks" in the coming months.

This wasn't so much an indictment of Tebow's 2011 season, more the realization that the Broncos need to add depth at the position. Kyle Orton was jettisoned during the season and Brady Quinn is set to be a free agent in a few weeks. While Tebow still remains atop Denver's depth chart heading into training camp, he has plenty to improve on. And when we say plenty, we really mean everything. Broncos general manager Brian Xanders provided specifics.

"It's the precision on the passing, it's the accuracy, the footwork, the mechanics, the rhythm, the timing, the quickness, the release. Everything," Xanders told the Denver Post's Mark Kiszla. "And he wants to work at it. And he's dedicated. He's going to work really hard at improving those things. Our coaches, Mike McCoy and Adam Gase, and hopefully even John Elway are going to help him improve throughout the offseason. And he knows he has a lot of work to do. We're excited about him improving in those areas."

And that improvement, ultimately, will decide Tebow's fate. This isn't a revelation, but it does explain why Elway would only commit to him as the starter "heading into training camp." As Kizla writes, however, there's another reason to make Tebow compete for the starting job: he plays better when he's challenged.

But raw athleticism will only get him so far. For Tebow to have sustained success he'll have to -- wait for it -- become a much better passer. Or, in Xanders' words, improve on everything.

Denver GM: Tebow needs to improve on 'everything'

I too think Elway has an ego problem. Still, there is a lot of work needed just to make Tebow an average NFL passing QB. He needs to do a much better job of passing the ball quickly. Any QB should find someone open after 7 or 8 secs. He needs to work on 3, 5, and 7 step drops while reading the defense downfield. None of this is easy but someone should tell him after calling in the play to look at a certain receiver, if pressured. It would make his job a little easier. And if possible, hire Kevin Gilbride as the OC. When Eli-te is about to be sacked, it is amazing to me the number of passes he completes to an outlet man, usually the running back.

You are just a bitter Patriot Fan, who saw Elway own your asses throughout his career!!  He did a great job in hiring the right coach, and they had a great 1st draft class.  After your boy McDumbass dismantled what we had, and got run out of town for cheating just like Billecheck always has ~ you can't expect a Superbowl right away.  Elway has had a good start in terms of rebuilding the culture around the Broncos, Elway, Fox, & Xanders will most certainly get us back to being a perrennial playoff team once again!!  We wouldn't be in such dissarray, if it weren't for one of the many lame excuse coaches who have ridden the coattails of Tom Brady!!  While Billecheck it a proven cheat, he is a good coach ~ but even he wouldn't have squat with out Brady!!  We Bronco fans know what it is to experience greatness, as we were priveledged to watch elway for his entire careerr ~ so enjoy Brady while he is there!!

Denver GM: Tebow needs to improve on 'everything'

I think Brian Xanders and John Elway need to improve in all aspects of their positions, as well.  Elway, has consistently been a pain in the a__, with his demeaning and vague comments since entering the front office.  I think his ego is such, he doesn't like playing second fiddle to the Tim Tebow with regard to the fans adoration for him.

Everything but onfield praying

Tebow's got the praying part down and making sure that everyone sees it as well. How about dating now that the offseason's commenced? There ought to be a legion of Christian girls willing to scream "OH GOD!" for him at this point. Hope he's interested.

i agree with that. tebow got a chance because they were losing. this is the most important winter in teboss life. he can busy doing endorsments and religious stuff. what he needs to do is watch tons of film, spend some of that money hiring a quarterback guru, and do all that work he is talking about. elway is right. the broncos cannot keep playin the way they have been playing. for one thing the chiefs an the raiders will win more game. also it is unlikely san diego will play as badly. denver will have to win more games to win the division. after all winter of watching the films with denver, the teams will be ready to stop them.

Think we all knew this one.  I think it's perfectly logical for them to make the QB a spot he will have to compete for.  This story comes to it's climax early next season.  From what I gather the Broncos fans are ready to put it to bed as well.  I love the heart and his ability to deflect all the BS thrown his way.

It would be an amazing story if he improves and rattles off a few good years.... just not sure if that is in the cards for them.

Well every team wants a top QB, the problem is it's hard to get them. The only chances you ever have are to draft them and hope you're right while they learn how to play, or sign one as an FA that some other team gave up on because they weren't performing well enough or are coming off serious injury. You can also try trading for one, but they'll have the same problems as the latter group but you'll also have to give something up to the team you're getting them from.

A lot of people wanted to quit on Eli Manning and claimed he wasn't an NFL QB and would never be good. I've always liked the guy but even I have to admit there were times in that third season he just looked completely lost. He had his flashes of brilliance but the overall package was really bad. In fact he didn't look too much different from Tim Tebow. You just never know, he could go on to become a great QB, maybe just not for the Broncos.

Denver GM: Tebow needs to improve on 'everything'

I can't wait for the team to get past this point in the history of Broncos football. Tebow is setting this franchise back as long as there is question about his value to the team. While I love to see the defense rested while the team is playing ball control and running offense I hate seeing the inability of them turning the ball over due to not seeing a play develop earlier and hanging receivers out for injury (larsen , Decker). the longer the team let this guy run the team the longer they stay in limbo and are an also ran team. I think John Elway realizes this and wants Tenow to let himself out the door sooner than later.
