INDIANAPOLIS – During Wednesday morning’s required media session, Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora failed to show, and the league has fined him $20,000 as a result.

While most of the Giants had assigned tables in the downtown Marriott’s ballroom adjacent to where coach Tom Coughlin held his Wednesday news conference, a few like Victor Cruz, Eli Manning, Ahmad Bradshaw and Umenyiora had podiums in rooms across the hall for the media availability start time of 10:30 a.m. ET.

All podiums and tables were filled by the players except for Umenyiora.

According to a team spokesman, via the Newark Star-Ledger, Umenyiora attended a 12:15 p.m. team meeting.

According to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, all other Giants and Patriots players and coaches were available during media sessions today.

UPDATE 3:02 p.m. ET: Here's the statement Umenyiora has released: “I misunderstood the schedule. It won’t happen again, and I will be at tomorrow’s media session and available after the game. I apologize for any inconvenience my absence this morning may have caused.”

NFL fines Umenyiora for missing media session

And yeah, it's ALL about the money for the NFL.

7300 fans went to media day (paying $25 per ticket).

The NFL made $180,000 (plus $20,000 on Umenyiora) on media day. What a joke!

NFL fines Umenyiora for missing media session

The Rule and Standards say that players "must" be available to the media for 30minutes on Tuesday of the week prior to the Superbowl if their team is participating.
The rules say that?
Because he WAS there on Tuesday.
He missed Wednesday's session.

How many times do these guys need to be asked the same questions by the media anyway?
Another media day on Thursday? What the hell?

Hey wakeup Umenyiora!! Your team is no where around and you can't find them. Think. Where do you suppose they could be? Oh. They're at a media session and I should hurry by behind over there. You misunderstood? Yeah, right. This coming from a guy who aspires to be an ESPN media hog talking his big head all over Connecticut. Come on now! Do you expect people to believe that a guy jostling for a seat with some more ex-jocks after football life doesn't relish the media attention? Of course not. The problem is that this Super Bowl media comedy fest isn't a big enough stage for Umenyiora's selfish ego.

I agree with Meathead 100%.

When a player signs the NFL Standard Contract he agree to abide by the rules and standards of the League.  The Rule and Standards say that players "must" be available to the media for 30minutes on Tuesday of the week prior to the Superbowl if their team is participating.  Umenyiora just didn't show...simple as that.   He got fined and it will be less than whatever his share is for playing in SB XLVI.

If the penalty was suspension from the game, I'll bet he'd been there with a smile on his face.

What a bunch of BS.
Say what you will about this being a "job requirement" but it's absurd.
You HAVE to talk to the media or you get fined 20 thousand dollars????
That's a full time job at $10 an hour for a full year.
Just for missing a Q & A????  Ridiculous.
It's no wonder I'm beginning to despise the NFL.

The press strikes again.  Just because they have freedom of the press, doesn't mean that anybody has to talk to them.  The NFL should be guilty of taking away his freedom of speech.  To require the playersto taqlk to the press is rediculous.  But, the press thinks they should always get what they want.

NFL fines Umenyiora for missing media session

Media day is awful.  players hate it.  the coaches hate it.  Half the media are these boneheads asking ridiculous crazy questions that have nothing to do with football.  While Osi is in the wrong here, he knew what he was doing.  Instead of talking to the media for hours these guys could be practicing, watching film, going over game plans.

But no, they have to answer questions like "which haircut on Tom Brady do you like better, Mr. Belichek?"

$20K to Osi is worth it.
