Irsay: 'Peyton has not passed our physical'

It's getting ugly between Manning and Irsay... (Getty Images)

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Peyton Manning saga is in full public relations mode. And despite a promise from Manning and Colts owner Jim Irsay that things reached a peace accord, everything managed to turn sour again late on Thursday night, courtesy of Jim Irsay's Twitter account and a report that Manning was "cleared" to return to playing football.

That report surfaced Thursday afternoon and then Irsay tweeted late on Thursday that indicated Peyton was, in fact, not clear, physically speaking.

"Peyton has not passed our physical nor has he been cleared to play for The Indianapolis Colts," Irsay tweeted. "Team statement coming on Friday."

This is about to get ugly, and it's about to get ugly quickly. There was some reconciliation of feelings between Irsay and Manning before the media arrived in Indianapolis earlier in the week. That almost put the Colts long-term situation at quarterback on the backburner when it comes to Indianapolis Star front pages. It hasn't.

Instead, things have somehow managed to become more awkward. Manning -- vis a vis a report -- was declared eligible to start playing football. This said nothing about the arm strength of Manning, who's recovering from nerve damage.

Irsay's tweet, on the other hand, speaks directly to Manning's lack of health, as it pertains to the Colts decision to pick up his $28 million option.

Peyton might well be healthy, but it matters little at this point, because the salvos are fired. Manning says he's healthy enough to play football. (Ergo, he believes he should be paid to be played football, right?)

And Irsay -- and the Colts -- disagree, and, ergo, Manning shouldn't be paid to play football. At least for the Colts. It's a nightmare of epic proportions for everyone involved and, despite the quite pleasant Super Bowl taking place in Indianapolis, this story is casting a cloud over the normally fun activities taking place in Indiana.

Irsay: 'Peyton has not passed our physical'

Wasn't it the Irsays who moved a cornerstone franchise of the NFL out of Baltimore?

The Mannings have learned from what happened to Archie's career by way of John Mecom, former owner of the New Orleans Saints, and how to protect your interests...

Manning has not lied about his statements regarding his health so I can't wait to see what kind of physical Irsay has in mind for the Colts to "clear" Manning - wonder if they'd use the same yardstick if a key player receives a concussion during a playoff run?!?

Irsay: 'Peyton has not passed our physical'

I can't believe that this situation is getting to the nasty point so quickly! We all could see the writing on the wall that Peyton Manning was done playing for the Indianapolis Colts, I seen it coming a few months ago, but I didn't see it getting nasty between Jim Irsay and Manning. I thought it would be handled behind closed doors and with class on both sides, but I was wrong on that front as well. This breakup between the quarterback and franchise will really spin out of control after the Super Bowl is over.

Irsay: 'Peyton has not passed our physical'

Sorry, I guess I should have said when it comes to team decisions, he can do what he wants.

Irsay: 'Peyton has not passed our physical'

This whole story is a disgrace and an embarassment to all parties involved. It's been handled very poorly by everyone.

Irsay: 'Peyton has not passed our physical'

I really feel like Jim Irsay needs someone like Bill Belichek or Robert Kraft to tell him to stay away from Twitter for a while.  I really believe that Polian's firing had something to do with his twittering.  I'm not saying his firing was entirely because of twitter....but it had something to do with it.  Irsay needs someone to tell him to lay low...like they did with Chad Ochocinco in New England!  I feel that every time Irsay tweets something, Manning has to come out and tell people its alright.  Everybody needs to just let these two work it out.  I feel that this situation has got way too out of hand!

Irsay: 'Peyton has not passed our physical'

You all can play Monday morning QB all you want, but the fact of the matter is, if you were fortunate enough to own an NFL franchise, or any other sports franchise, or even any business of your own, you wouldnt be paying a player $28million that may/may not play. The Dr can clear him all he wants. That doesnt mean Manning can play up to the level required to warrant $28 million.

Irsay: 'Peyton has not passed our physical'

I can understand Manning wanting to play, but I can't understand pushing this idea that he is capable of playing so he can scoop up an extra $28 mil. Course if there's nothing in the contract that says he must be certified healthy to play and receive the money, this might just be a delay tactic to get the Colts to cough up the cash. If it is, I've lost all respect in Manning the person. That's a big if though. I'd like to think if he can't play, and doctors tell him he could end up in a wheelchair or be killed on the field, that he would walk away from the big paycheck and let Indy use the money to build on his legacy. Afterall, does he really need the loot?
There no doubt that Manning would like to get the 28 Mil., but there a bigger issue beside the money. If Manning could be released  or traded sometime in the future, Manning know that it be good idea let other teams know that he is almost ready to play football

Note to Andrew Luck:  Pay attention to Irsay's true colors.  No matter what you may achieve in your career with Indy, Irsay will dump on you if he figures it suits his purpose.  So take your money while you can.

Irsay: 'Peyton has not passed our physical'

Oh Jim Irsay.  Come clean now or re-sign him.

It's become blatantly obvious that Jim Irsay is the spin-doctor. He doesn't want Manning cleared, because then he looks more reasonable when he cuts the best thing that ever happened to Indianapolis football.  Peyton Manning made football #1 in Indiana. After he's gone, and no momentum from a 2-14 season, it's looking like in a few years, he'll be rolling out in the middle of the night like his Dad - because there won't be enough people to fill that stadium when Peyton's gone.

But, I digress. Let's look at this through what we know, and not what we don't know.

1)  We know that Peyton has been cleared by a medical doctor.
-He hasn't been cleared, as of yet, by the Colts. Irsay, the owner's, last road-block before he will take total blame for cutting Peyton Manning - and LOSING a lot of fans in the process, who will follow Peyton wherever he goes.

2)  Peyton Manning - classy individual who has never lied or played the media before.
-Jim Irsay:  Owner addicted to Twitter - can't help but be in the spot-light, when, minus owning the team, there's nothing "famous" about him.
-Jim Irsay:  Maybe the apple didn't fall to far from the tree, because this looks like something as sneaky as sneaking out of Baltimore in the middle of the night.

So, I can't see this any other way but:  Peyton saying "Look, if you are going to cut me, the whole Indianpolis Colts football world is going to know it's because you picked Luck over me, it's not going to be blaming ME because of my health."

And Irsay, feeling exposed, and knowing now, that without the neck issue, cutting Peyton is going cost him and the Colts a lot of PR (something an owner/team needs way more than a player, especially Peyton Manning, who will go down as one of the greatest ever, and probably take his next team to a couple of Super Bowls).

Game, Set, Match:  Peyton Manning!

Irsay: 'Peyton has not passed our physical'

Sometimes I worry about Irsay. If there was ever a time to just 'let it go' it was now. Him and his twitter account !! The doctors "clearance" was a non-event around the NFL (since everyone knows Peyton still needs to demonstrate the arm still works) until Irsay pops off on twitter and turns it into a new pissing match. There's no way to muzzle the owner I guess, unless he actually listens to his PR department.
Irsay don't seem able to help himself by going on twitter, but this make it seem that Irsay don't believe that Manning could pass the Colts Physical. I really don't think that Manning be a Colt when the season start, even if he pass the Colts Physical.
