Santonio Holmes was at the center of the disaster that was the Jets 2011 season, repeatedly calling out his offensive line and being blamed for some of the locker room problems. But he's going to remain a Jet for the foreseeable future, as the team now owes him a chunk of guaranteed money for 2011 and 2012.

Latest NFL News, Notes

We noted back at the beginning of January that Holmes would reportedly be owed an additional $7.5 million of his 2013 contract on the second day of the 2012 league year if he was still on the Jets. As the New York Post reports, since Santonio hasn't been cut as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the Jets now owe the wideout $15.25 million, combining his 2012 and 2013 guaranteed figures.

Turns out, Rex Ryan was serious about Holmes coming back.

The Jets could certainly cut Holmes over the next two years; there's nothing stopping them. But doing so would be throwing more than $15 million down the tubes and stripping their roster of their best skill-position player.

Ryan's team faced an unreal amount of turmoil following the 2011 season, as unnamed members of the team called out Mark Sanchez, Brian Schottenheimer left and running back LaDainian Tomlinson pointed the finger at the wide receiver group for some of the problems. Holmes was at the center of all the internal problems.

If he continues along that path, he'll be an absolute waste of money. If Rex Ryan can straighten him out, then the wide receiver can still live up to the monster contract he signed in the 2011 offseason.

Polish pounder your comments sucked too, but mine were directed at the guy above you. People have such short memories. One off season and the whole team is a disaster. We will see next season. Also until there is one team that doesn't have a bad apple on it shut up about character, I love the steeler fan giving his degenerate qb a pass. Last I looked molesting underage girls in the bathroom was worse then taking a play off or pouting on the sideline.

This is directed at polish pounder, you can say alot of things about Holmes that are not complimentary. One thing you can't say is he is slow or lacking talent, with a habit of making big catches. In the end if you don't have talent you don't win. The steelers won a super bowl thanks in part to Holmes. Jets had a bad year, it happens. Holmes may not be a top 40 wr in fantasy football, but in real life football he is. The jets had a bad year after back to back AFC title games. I'm glad to have Holmes and I'd bet he has a big season next year.

The Jets have zero chance at Peyton. They need more than Peyton to turn that team around anyway.

A lot of people said the Steelers were stupid for getting rid of Santonio Holmes.  Do those people still feel that way?  I'm not rubbing it in, I'm just curious as to how those people feel now?  The Steelers as an organization are pretty good at judging the character of players and deciding when enough is enough.   That being said, I know Ben hasn't lived up to those standards in the past and neither has Harrison.  Neither of those guys seem to be dividing the Steelers locker room though.  Santonio didn't do that on his own, but he obviously didn't do much to help hold it together.

Horrible team chemistry and a bad locker room doesn't reflect good on your team's record.  I've seen this in the 2010 season with the Bengals.  Bring in TO and all of a sudden the TOchoshow is trying to run the team.  Bengals finish with a 4-12 record, Palmer has a horrible season, and TO calls out the coaching staff.  That was a complete mess.  Bengals got rid of all their trash and look what happened.  Andy Dalton and AJ Green take this team to the playoffs in their rookie year.  Jets need to think about doing a serious overhaul.

The Jets are a mess and I don't see any hope of Peyton Manning joining this circus like so many people are hoping for, it will not happen! I like Rex Ryan as a football coach, but I don't think he'll be able to get this sinking ship turned back around. I think Ryan's time in New York will be over after next season and Santonio Holmes will continue to be the same selfish guy he's been during his NFL career.

What a shame this team has become, they were so close to overtaking the New England Patriots as the team to beat in the AFC East a couple of seasons ago!

Haha the fat oaf made him a captain! A captain! First I thought players got to vote on that, secondly why would you make this seflish primadonna a captain? What does that tell guys like Revis and Mangold?

And no way is Holmes in the top 10, maybe he sneaks into the top 20 but that's it. He's not really a #1 WR, but that's typical Jets MO there I suppose.
