Santonio Holmes was at the center of the disaster that was the Jets 2011 season, repeatedly calling out his offensive line and being blamed for some of the locker room problems. But he's going to remain a Jet for the foreseeable future, as the team now owes him a chunk of guaranteed money for 2011 and 2012.

Latest NFL News, Notes

We noted back at the beginning of January that Holmes would reportedly be owed an additional $7.5 million of his 2013 contract on the second day of the 2012 league year if he was still on the Jets. As the New York Post reports, since Santonio hasn't been cut as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the Jets now owe the wideout $15.25 million, combining his 2012 and 2013 guaranteed figures.

Turns out, Rex Ryan was serious about Holmes coming back.

The Jets could certainly cut Holmes over the next two years; there's nothing stopping them. But doing so would be throwing more than $15 million down the tubes and stripping their roster of their best skill-position player.

Ryan's team faced an unreal amount of turmoil following the 2011 season, as unnamed members of the team called out Mark Sanchez, Brian Schottenheimer left and running back LaDainian Tomlinson pointed the finger at the wide receiver group for some of the problems. Holmes was at the center of all the internal problems.

If he continues along that path, he'll be an absolute waste of money. If Rex Ryan can straighten him out, then the wide receiver can still live up to the monster contract he signed in the 2011 offseason.

It's just professional sports stuff....if they thought they could get someone better they would cut him....since they can't they kept him....makes sense to me.....I'm not happy with his mouth and antics.....but I've seen much worse in pro sports thans what he's done....plenty of blame to go around if you asked me and to put it all on him would be ignoring the many other problems they currently have

Oh this has got to be the dumbest move by the jets organization yet!  Congrats on putting the final nail in the coffin for the 2013 season! Thanks for committing a complete organization suicide!

This whole thing is somewhat similar to what the Patriots had to deal with Randy Moss. The Patriots brian trust a tad smarter that the Jests didn't give Randy the big dinero and he was out o fthe league in 2 years. That salary will put a crimp in signing players that the Jests have to desperatley aquire. I never understood why GM's pay so much for WR's!!! Used to be RB would get the big coin.

They will still cut him, there needs to be changes. You cant have half the team speak out on you publically and expect to live another day. This is irrelevant to his situation to the Jets.

If you thought he was a cancer in the locker room before, he just got paid guaranteed money and there will no hope for a cure...Rex can't control anyone in a Jets uniform, especially someone who makes at least 3 or 4 times as much money as the coach per season. Good Luck with that Jets fans.
