Brady told O'Brien he threw ball away on safety

Much ado's been made about the safety on the first Patriots offensive play of the game in the Super Bowl last Sunday -- Tom Brady threw the ball to no one while standing in his own end zone. But was intentional grounding the right call? And did some receiver mess up a route that caused Brady to throw the ball where he did?

Turns out, no. Brady actually was throwing it away. On the Sound FX portion of NFL Replay, NFL Films caught Brady telling (former) offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien that he did in fact throw it away after first trying to find Rob Gronkowski, then Wes Welker and finally feeling heat from Justin Tuck.

"I looked to Gronk, I looked to Wes, he dropped and then I felt [Tuck]," Brady said. "I had no place to throw it away. I threw it over his head. I didn't want to throw an interception."

So it's a pretty clear case of intentional grounding, provided Brady was in the pocket (he was) and therefore a clear safety provided Brady was in the end zone (he was). That didn't stop Bill Belichick from arguing the call with referee John Parry through.

Sound FX picked up Belichick calling Parry over and saying "The intentional grounding call ..."

"What's the problem with it?" Parry replied.

"He had a guy coming in there -- he didn't throw it to him. But he had a guy that was coming in there," Belichick said. "I mean, damn."

There are four parts up on NFL.com (if you don't have NFL Network) and all are worth watching. As we noted earlier on Thursday, one clip shows Belichick telling his defense to stifle Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks and "make" the Giants find Mario Manningham on their final drive.

Unfortunately for Belichick, that worked out about as well as his attempt to argue that Brady didn't throw the ball away.

Brady told O'Brien he threw ball away on safety

By the way, there are no asterisks in the NFL Record Book. i'm not saying Spygate didn't happen. But the NFL doesn't consider Spygate to be enough of a factor.

Don't ever let people get to you with the spygate thing, it's a complete joke.  The Pats got caught "cheating" around week 3 or something?  They won out the rest of that season, only losing in the superbowl on a miracle catch late in the game.  If "cheating" had anything to do with the Pats success they would have lost some games after getting "caught" and wouldn't be in the playoffs practically every year since.  Oh wait, they missed the playoffs I believe once with 11 wins, wasn't it????

Brady got hurt the next season and since then the Pats started to try and re-tool a little bit, especially on defense.  Yeah, they lost this year in the superbowl to the Giants again but how could anybody say spygate has anything to do with it?  If not for a great catch by a Giants wide reciever and a couple key drops by the Pats they easily could have won this game.  Heck, even the first safety in a superbowl in God knows how long helped the Giants... not saying it wasn't a safety, maybe it was.  But in my lifetime I've never seen one called on a bomb like that before.

People hate successful teams... they hate success period.  I'm a Wings fan in hockey and I've heard it all over the years.  I heard the Wings only won because they spent more then everybody else.  I've heard the Wings only won because Yzerman was there.  I heard they only won because Bowman was the coach.  I heard they only won because the Wings were in an easy division for 10 or 15 years.

Well guess what?  Bowman is gone and Yzerman is gone.  There is a hard cap in the NHL now and their division is probably the best in the NHL.  Yet the Wings are still winning....... 2 finals and one cup since they put a hard salary cap in.......

The Patriots will win for a few more years at least.  Maybe they win another superbowl soon, maybe they don't. But I know for sure they'll compete for superbowls and they'll be in the conversation when we talk about contenders.  The Giants?  Two great wins but they missed the playoffs i believe 3 years in a row in between.  I love consistent teams like the Pats....

@Brian8ball, uh....BigBang, you are a liar and continue to post lies about me. I never said Spygate didn't happen. NEVER. And you Brian, I mean BigBang. are the only one who doesn't believe me when I said I thought it was a safety. just like you told deezy on another thread that I like to make up stories and that that's what Red Sox fans are expected to do. you don't even have sense enough to look at my profile. I'm a Cubs fan.

You accuse me of making up things, but I just caught you in three lies right there.

By the way, there are no asterisks in the NFL Record Book. i'm not saying Spygate didn't happen. But the NFL doesn't consider Spygate to be enough of a factor.

@RedWings, I wondered how long it was going to take you to suspect that BigBang sounds and acts a lot like Brian8ball. Ruprecht and Zigzag have already come to that suspicion even before I did. On another thread, Bigbang offered to take up a mythical bet from another guy that said he would take Brady while BigBang/Brian had Joe Montana. At first, BigBang wasn't typing his posts in all caps, but I ran across one earlier from BigBang that was in all caps. Add this to the glaring fact that BigBang's account came into existence near the end of January, just a few days after Brian8ball made his last stand and was banned. It would seem that too many things are adding up. Bigbang also happens to be a Giants fan, which makes sense since they were the only NY football team left in the postseason. Or maybe BigBang is Brian's cousin. Banger5ball.

What do you think RedWings ? I think he's back, naturally riding a winner in order to glorify himself.

Brady told O'Brien he threw ball away on safety

Mempat,
1st off I am not who you keep saying I am if you think I am report me.You are just a guy that likes to talk and make up stories. No one believes that you thought it was a safety. It was a call that is hardly ever called. And you are just another Pats fan in denial. The reason the Pats record in regular season is so good because they get to play the Bills and Dolphins 4 times a year.

Go look at what the Eagles players have to say about the SB against the Pats. The Pats cheated got caught paid huge fines and yet people like you keep trying to say it did not happen. The Pats are not winning another SB.in Brady's tenure,he played terrible in the Ravens game and all he had to do was hit a wide open Welker and he could not.So say what you want about who you think I may be but the fact is the Pats have not won a S.B since they got caught cheating. No matter what you say

BRIAN8BALL !!!! Welcome back man !!! Long time no talk !!!  So did you think you were smart enough to come back with another id and not get busted?   You aren't smart enough to pull that off man.

LOL

Brady told O'Brien he threw ball away on safety

The safety was the correct call. Brady should have rolled out of the pocket if possible and then throw the pass out of bounds or where he actually threw it. I remember thinking at the time that I was afraid the refs might call intentional grounding. A moment later, they did. Brady was definitely in the pocket and wastrying to avoid a sack in the end zone.

As to the constant harping of Spygate by the Miami fans and BigBang(who sounds a whole lot like the departed Brian8ball and coincidentally arrived on the scene shortly after the former made his last stand and was subsequently banned), I'm used to this kind of "haven't won a Super Bowl since Spygate" stuff. In some people's minds, the Patriots will always be cheaters and those same people love to disregard two important things:

1-The Patriots are 69-19 overall since the videotapes were confiscated, yet the Spygaters only want to point to the postseason mark and the lack of Super Bowl wins.

2-The NFL Record Book shows the Patriots as having 3 Super Bowl championships and none of them have an asterisk, much to the chagrin of the Spygaters. What the Spygaters say doesn't matter. Nothing is going to be changed.

The question I have is this: If the videotapes were all that helpful, why didn't the Patriots blow out their 3 Super Bowl opponents and many other regular season and playoff opponents prior to the tapes being confiscated during week 1 of the 2007 season ?? If the tapes allowed the Patriots to know the opposing teams playcall so much, the Pats should have destroyed the Rams, Panthers and Eagles as well as many other opponents during the supposed time of videotaping. Instead, all three Super Bowls were decided by field goals.

Brady told O'Brien he threw ball away on safety

I have been watching Football on tv for quite a few years. I remember watching Y.A.Tittle on a black and white set when I was young. I have never seen intentional grounding called on a pass that went over the defensive line players. Into the ground, out of bounds, yes but down the field over defensive players never!! See something new every year.
I believe its time we start cheating again. If every ding dong from the Giants, Steelers, Dolphins and Jets blame the team for doing it, might as well do it. How about a drone at 1000 ft taking movies of the cheerleaders showering- beamed back to the big board? We could dress a Seal team as our defensive backfield players. When they take out a wide receiver, they realy TAKE OUT a wide receiver. Ask Giszel for some of her armed guards (like at the wedding) located over in the Visiting bench area. Bye bye coach-kicker-quarterback.
Lets realy cheat our way to a Superbowl win. We're taking the blame for it anyhow.   Go Pats. Wink

Oh. I love the What IF's...

So, using your logic, New England lost the SB themselves. The Giants didn't win. IF Welker catches that ball, or IF Branch catches that ball, then...

Don't be stupid...

Face it, your team sucks, and will for some time. Get over it.

Too funny hearing all the "Cheat" comments. Especially from jealous Miami fans. When was the last time you were in the playoffs, let alone a Super Bowl? Oh ya..that's right...2001! LOL...and 1983 since the last time they appeared in a SB.

I'm sure the comment(s) will be; "Ya, but wait until NEXT year!"

Good Times..thanks for the chuckles.

Why can't Patriot fans just admit there perfect QB can't function under pressure.  The refs made the right call and that is that.  Stop making excuses and realize the NY Giants are SB champs.  If the tables were turned and it was Manning who did the grounding, I don't think we would be hearing the Giant fan base cry about the call.  They would be calling Manning a Bone Head.
One quick note... Has anyone noticed since the spy gate incident, the Pats haven't won a big game?  If anyone says about the Baltimore game, Baltimore lost that game themselves.
