Victor Cruz: 'I deserve to be paid more money'

CruzBy Josh Katzowitz

In real-life standards, making $490,000 is a pretty decent salary. In the world of pro football, it’s more like a “meh” financial reward, almost the definition of entry-level pay. For an outgoing wide receiver who was virtually unknown before this season and then exploded with an 82-catch, 1,536-yard, nine-touchdown performance and became known as the guy who salsa dances after he scores, it’s an outrage.

Well, not really an outrage, but after his glorious season that ended with a touchdown catch in the Giants Super Bowl XLVI win against the Patriots, Victor Cruz  -- who made $450,000 in 2011 -- would like a substantial raise for 2012.

“I think I was paid, you know, relative to where I came in this year and, you know, I came in as a free agent so that’s the salary I was on, so I don’t feel like I was underpaid,” Cruz told the men at Pro Football Talk. “I mean, I feel like after my performance this year, you know, I feel like I deserve to be paid more money at this point.  But that’s something I’ll let my agents and those people take care of and I’ll just go out there and play the game.”

I don’t think many people would disagree that Cruz deserves more money after his 2011 performance, but remember, he signed a three-year $1.2 million contract after he went unselected in the 2010 draft. He missed all of last season with an injury, so it's not like Cruz has put together multiple seasons of consistency.

NFL Offseason Begins
Also, you have to remember the players who had breakout seasons and demanded more money from their teams and never got it. Players like Sidney Rice, Matt Forte and DeSean Jackson. Just because Cruz had one wonderful season, that doesn’t mean the Giants have to give him a bigger raise than they’d already planned. And considering New York has a powerful receiving corps, is Cruz holding out in training camp really going to scare the Giants into tearing up his old contract and giving him a new one? I’d guess no.

But in other Cruz news, it’s also been reported that he signed with the powerful IMG agency after the Super Bowl. That won’t increase his ability to barter for a new deal with the Giants, because IMG was hired to work on his marketing and endorsement campaigns (I see either a marketing campaign for Tostitos salsa or for Fred Astaire Dance Studios, though considering Cruz turned down “Dancing with the Stars,” he might like to go less mainstream).

However, adding IMG means Cruz most likely will make more money this year. And if that money doesn’t come from the Giants, Cruz might have to be OK with that.

In even more Cruz news, he weighed in on the laughable “Rob Gronkowski was dancing with his shirt off after the Patriots lost” controversy. Cruz, it seems, disagrees with the spirit of what Gronkowski was doing.

“I would have been in my room, watching TV, soaking in the moment,” Cruz told PFT. “It’s not every day you make it to a Super Bowl, man. . . . Some guys play 15, 16 years in this league and don’t make it the Super Bowl. Or even the playoffs, let alone the Super Bowl. . . . I probably wouldn’t have been partying too much after that.”

Victor Cruz: 'I deserve to be paid more money'

How do you try to minimize what he did?  A good year?  Let me correct you.  Victor Cruz had a prolific year.  Broke team records, led the league in YPR and finished 3rd in yards behind Megatron and Welker.  Pay the man.  Reese is as smart as they come, he will do the right thing.

now, if Cruz was taken in 1st round was already making  a few million a year, then yeah, he should wait till close to F.A. to start asking for more money.  but there's a HUGE DIFFERENCE between undrafted F.A. and drafted players (and thank GOD, we don't have the retarded system of paying top 5 picks 10 mil a year anymore)...   so while i don't think the Giants are required to give him 10 mil per yaer (even though he's performing like a 13 mil player), if they don't give him any raise (at least 2-3 mil per year), then i think the Giants are not being sensible and it would only piss off one of the most talented/clutch WRs (and please don't ruin your respect/intelligence by pointing out he's performed only 1 year...   those smart enough to judge/scout talent, Football speed, how quickly a WRs makes the cut/explodes off the cut/proper route running...   it's not hard to tell he's a star for life...   MANY knowledgeable Giants fans knew before season started that JPP would be the best Giants D-linemen of all time (LT's was an LB)...   we saw the same thing in 1st game of Nick's career when his huge hands and body control (not to mention him always catchig/poking the ball with his hands, not his chest) and knew he was a keeper for life...   we saw the same thig with Cruz all throughout the season so i hope the Giants give him SOME raise...   if they don't and i'm Victor Cruz, i don't complain, but i get the hell out of here once my contracts done

No doubt the kid is a talent.  Guess who's going 1-2 or 3 next year on nearly all FFB drafts?

but man, now we gotta deal with this crap all over again.  If the players can do this, I say they shouldn't bitch if the NFL yanks the carpet out and throws 18 games on them.  We all "just want what we want", but you have to wait your turn Victor.  I hope he doesn't make too much of a stink.  No doubt he's worth it, but play out your contract, brother.  1 year ago you were thankful just to get on the team!

Ah actually YES teams can sign a player and then tell him to walk cause the NFL Contracts are not Guaranteed!! The only money player are assurred of is signing Bonus. So the NFL has encouraged this type of behavior cause they do it all the time.

And by the way name me another team with as been to the Super Bowl as many times as the Patriots have in the past 12 years, name me another team to win as many Super Bowls as they have in the past 12 years. No team has been on top longer and won as many Super Bowls in that time span.

Way to cherry pick time periods.  How about naming a team who has won as many Superbowls in the past 5 years?  Giants - 2, Steelers - 1, Packers - 1, Saints - 1.  New England - 0.

NFL is cyclical - I can remember a couple times when the Giants had a terrible team for several years running and minus the 1986 run, the Patriots were a pretty big mess overall from the late 70s until the mid 90s.  Being cyclical makes it great for fans - most fans only have to wait a couple years for their team being down to come back.

As for Victor Cruz, sure he can ask for more money.  You and I can go to our bosses and ask for more money based on good performance.  Will you get it?  Will he get it?  Not sure.  I have a feeling the Giants may work with him some for next year but no miracles unless he posts a good year next year too.  Then we'll see about a long term big $ contract.

Victor Cruz: 'I deserve to be paid more money'

That did not take long.

Lets get this straight.  Cruz was paid basically 1/2 a million in 2010 for not playing at all..not bad income for an undrafted player.  Made another 1/2 million this year in his first full season.  So Cruz has made 1 milliion for one full season of play.  Still very good pay for an undrafted player.    One season was a season was very good.

Play next year, have a good season and then reap your rewards.
