The 2011 season was a good one for Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt. Former owner Al Davis reworked his three-year, $31.5 million deal into a five-year, $54.5 million deal*, and then, he had the best statistical season of his career, notching four interceptions and 15 passes defended.

He was no Nnamdi Asomugha, but in Asomugha’s absence, he still was one of the team’s most-important defenders.

NFL Offseason Begins
Routt’s 2012 hasn’t gotten off to such a good start, though, as the Raiders announced they’ve released the seven-year veteran.

*It was a deal that guaranteed him $20 million, and at the time, it made him the third-highest paid cornerback in the league.

While the move is surprising, perhaps it shouldn’t have been. As the San Jose Mercury News points out, this is what new general manager Reggie McKenzie said after he took over the job:

“From where we are, we've got some contracts that are kind of out of whack, but in discussions and viewing the cap situation, we should be fine,. We don't have to make wholesale changes.”

It was thought that Routt’s $5 million salary for 2012 was guaranteed, but NFL analyst Adam Caplan reported that the money was only due if Routt was on the roster this Friday.

Charger fans....LOL.  Love the Charger fans out there as they bring good laughs.  You have little or no knowledge of what the Raiders did not did not do with Routt.  What you do have knowledge of is how Routt got burned by Charger wideouts this season.  I realize that you are stuck with Rivers and am really sorry that you still have Norv as the head coach, but it does not defend your uninformed post.

Already McKenzie and staff are impressing!  I think this is a great move.  The money Routt was making was ridiculous and he truly was not a quality defender this season.  He was fast (Davis' first love) but seemed to be caught out of position and he made questionable decisions.  I look forward to future personnel moves from the Raiders.  Change is good!

if you can't cover the top 5 receivers in the league, you shouldn't get top 3 money....Routt had to GO! he got beat all year long.....please see Calvin Johnson's stats against the Raiders.

Raiders release Routt and his huge contract

Routt gets a bad rap because he plays for the Raiders, unfortunately.  In today's NFL, PI or illegal contact could be called on every single pass play of every game.  And you would have to time the games with a sundial.  Most of the time he was all over the other team's best receiver and was the best corner for the Raiders by far imo.  Look at Woody, he got called alot when he was in Oakland, and now he gets the benefit of the doubt, though he's still a physical corner. F U NFL!!!! Raider Nation!!!!

Okay Houston Texans...Let's bring him home to play opposite Jonathan Joseph! Routt was great for the University of Houston, and could come make some appearances to help the football/basketball connecting stadium get built on schedule. Adding him to the best defense in the league will put us in New Orleans for next year's Super Bowl......uhhh......against the Saints though..

If you don't watch Raider games o a regular basis please STFU. Rough had a horribly embarrassing 2011 season. Just horrible. Routt got beat over and over again, plus had 18 PI calls ( NFL Record ) Al Davis gave Routt that contract and now new ownership is trying to clean up his mistakes. Raiders have no draft picks...the money saved could help resign other FA or new FA...
